Photos and Description of the Empire vacation cottage rental
Cute 2BR 1BA 50's Cottage. Sleeps 4.

This place is a winter and summer wonderland. We’re surrounded by a 70,000 acre national park (Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore), named by ABC's Good Morning America's 'Most Beautiful Place in America.' There’s plenty of skiing, canoeing, hiking and fishing and more. We’re close to Traverse City and Leelanau County, the best of wine regions this side of the Mississippi. Honor Michigan is 7 miles to the south and was rated in Field and Stream Magazine as the best all around recreation spot in the country. In 2012 Mario Batali listed his 9 favorite restaurants in the world. Two of them are here in Traverse City (25 miles away).

On the adjoining 5 acres there's a home I built where we run a small organic jam making company (foodforthought.net). While a tour is always popular with adults, children usually get a big kick out of seeing jam, salsa or salad dressing being made. If we are around we are happy to give tours. Lake Michigan is a three mile drive, ski or hike away and the beach is part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes, meaning there’s few people and no homes for miles in either direction.

It’s breathtaking summer or winter. This place is perfect for a winter reading and writing hideaway or family get-a-way.

It was stated earlier, but bears repeating. This place was recently remodeled to green building standards. Our NO PETS/NO SMOKING policies are not negotiable. Don't take it personally. We are trying to keep the place habitable for people with allergy or chemical sensitivities. We also clean with non-toxic cleaning products.

We also request respect for peace and quiet. It is a rural area, but our home in nearby and sound travels far in quiet rural settings. No amplified loud music, fireworks etc. Singing, 'unplugged music' and children playing are music to our ears and acceptable. Thank you for your understanding.

Amenities:: TV w/DVD player (no cable) and fire pit.

There is no phone. You may get cell service depending on your service provider. Verizon and AT&T usually have good signal.

Surrounding area: This location is ideal for it's rural setting, near beaches and central to the Sleeping Bear Dunes. However, you are not far from civilization in that our area boasts award winning restaurants, wineries and other food artisan establishments. It is truly an area of breathtaking natural beauty and a culinary paradise.

Traverse City is the closet large town (about 25 miles). Here are just a few of it's recognitions:

- one of American's Five Top Foodie Towns, Bon Appetit

- one of the Top 10 Places to Enjoy Local Wines, USA Today

- one of America's Top Ten Wine Destinations, TripAdvisor.com

- #8 in list of America's Top Ten Beach Towns and a Top 10 'Coolest Towns in the States, AOL Travel News

- second place in Our Top 10 Charming Small Towns, TripAdvisor.com

- on the Top Ten list of Surprising Foodie Towns, Livability.com

- one of Midwest's Five Top Food Towns, Midwest Living

- one of America's Top Adventure Towns, NationalGeographic.com

A Relaxing Week

The Lemon Drop Cottage was a perfect location for our family's vacation. Our kids loved roaming the yard and were intrigued by the tentworms, skunk, chickens, and other creatures they encountered. The cottage is in a lovely setting that is very peaceful and provides plenty of relaxation!

We also enjoyed the nearby sights -- we made trips to the Sleeping Bear Dunes, hiked two trails, enjoyed the Empire Beach, and traveled through the Leelenau Peninsula. Loved the local aspargas and the complimentary Cherry Salsa Atento as well.

Thank you for a great week - we hope to see you again!

Great time!

We had a great time at the "Lemon Drop" and visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes. To be honest, it was even better than I expected. Although it's tiny, it had everything we needed and was nice and clean. We stayed two nights and the accommodations were perfect for our family (2 adults, 3 children under 6). Lots of land to run around on. The owners children where also very friendly and even gave us a short tour of their farm and chicken coop! We hope to make back again next year!

Just what we needed

Our family of four thoroughly enjoyed this vacation! The cottage was in a great, central location to many local attractions. It is a very well maintained cabin, very clean and had everything we needed. After running around seeing the sights it was nice to come back to cook our own meal and unwind. We find ourselves already missing the area and will be back next summer!

The Lemon Drop Inn was rustic, homey and quiet. The location was beautiful, and very close to local shopping, restaurants, trails, etc. The kitchen was small but adequate. We really appreciated all the environmentally friendly products that were available for cleaning.
The one negative I would say would be the mattresses. The full sized mattress was very soft, springy and uncomfortable. It also made a lot of noise with even the slightest movement. The bunk beds are obviously for kids, but if you are traveling with other adults and you need to use the bunk beds- it is very very hard to get into and out of.
It was overall a wonderful stay, we appreciated the warmth of the owners and the beauty of the dunes. If the bunk beds were two twin beds instead and if the full mattress was less springy and noisy, that would have made the stay 100% perfect.
Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the kind review. We love it too and sometimes wish we lived there.
As to the beds, I'm not sure what to say. The queen bed is a nearly new pillowtop. So we'll check that out. Maybe I better sleep there and try it out?

The bunk beds are best for kids and you do have the climb a ladder on the end to get in the top bunk, but thats how it is for bunk beds. For sure this is best suited for a small family.

We have an almost 2 year old who can be loud. Nice to not have to worry about waking up someone in the next hotel room when he fussed at night. There was room for the pack-n-play beside the bunk beds. (Note that there is a shower - or if you prefer, a kitchen sink - but no bathtub. That wasn't a problem for us, but may be helpful info for others with little tykes.) Our sons enjoyed seeing the chipmunks and the owl.

Short, easy drive to Empire for grocery items. (We cooked 'in' every night but one. Nice to have a little kitchen, outdoor grill, and campfire ring. Eating on the back porch was quite peaceful.) Empire also has a BEAUTIFUL beach with a playground. We and our kids loved it. We did hear, though, that it gets quite crowded during the busy season. We were there mid-September. Also close to Sleeping Bear Dunes and Riverside Canoes. If it had rained the whole time, we would have had to get a bit creative or do some longer driving, as we spent a great deal of time outdoors.

About an hour away is Traverse City. The Blue Tractor Cook Shop was amazing! (We had their beer can chicken pizza and decided it was the best pizza we've ever tasted.) We tried Moomers ice cream and we appreciated their environmental and health consciousness and their customer service, but the ice cream itself lacked flavor. Cold and creamy without much taste. About an hour to Northport to visit Grand Traverse Lighthouse. (Note that the national parks parking pass isn't valid at the lighthouse since it is state owned.)

If you want a high-falutin, fancy place or if you require wheelchair access (or if you are of an especially large build - the bathroom would be a little tight for a very large guest), you would be happier if you keep looking. But for a young family who likes simplicity and wants easy driving access to some outdoorsy fun, it is great. It was accurately represented online. The Youngs were helpful but not intrusive. We would definitely recommend it to friends and family.

Thank you, Youngs, for a very nice stay!
