|Minimum Stay||2 - 6 nights|
This place is a winter and summer wonderland. We’re surrounded by a 70,000 acre national park (Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore), named by ABC's Good Morning America's 'Most Beautiful Place in America.' There’s plenty of skiing, canoeing, hiking and fishing and more. We’re close to Traverse City and Leelanau County, the best of wine regions this side of the Mississippi. Honor Michigan is 7 miles to the south and was rated in Field and Stream Magazine as the best all around recreation spot in the country. In 2012 Mario Batali listed his 9 favorite restaurants in the world. Two of them are here in Traverse City (25 miles away).
On the adjoining 5 acres there's a home I built where we run a small organic jam making company . While a tour is always popular with adults, children usually get a big kick out of seeing jam, salsa or salad dressing being made. If we are around we are happy to give tours. Lake Michigan is a three mile drive, ski or hike away and the beach is part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes, meaning there’s few people and no homes for miles in either direction.
It’s breathtaking summer or winter. This place is perfect for a winter reading and writing hideaway or family get-a-way.
It was stated earlier, but bears repeating. This place was recently remodeled to green building standards. Our NO PETS/NO SMOKING policies are not negotiable. Don't take it personally. We are trying to keep the place habitable for people with allergy or chemical sensitivities. We also clean with non-toxic cleaning products.
We also request respect for peace and quiet. It is a rural area, but our home in nearby and sound travels far in quiet rural settings. No amplified loud music, fireworks etc. Singing, 'unplugged music' and children playing are music to our ears and acceptable. Thank you for your understanding.
Amenities:: TV w/DVD player (no cable) and fire pit.
There is no phone. You may get cell service depending on your service provider. Verizon and AT&T usually have good signal.
Surrounding area: This location is ideal for it's rural setting, near beaches and central to the Sleeping Bear Dunes. However, you are not far from civilization in that our area boasts award winning restaurants, wineries and other food artisan establishments. It is truly an area of breathtaking natural beauty and a culinary paradise.
Traverse City is the closet large town (about 25 miles). Here are just a few of it's recognitions:

The Lemon Drop Cottage was a perfect location for our family's vacation. Our kids loved roaming the yard and were intrigued by the tentworms, skunk, chickens, and other creatures they encountered. The cottage is in a lovely setting that is very peaceful and provides plenty of relaxation!
We also enjoyed the nearby sights -- we made trips to the Sleeping Bear Dunes, hiked two trails, enjoyed the Empire Beach, and traveled through the Leelenau Peninsula. Loved the local aspargas and the complimentary Cherry Salsa Atento as well.
Thank you for a great week - we hope to see you again!
My girlfriend and I were planning a "get away from it all" trip and decided to visit Sleeping Bear Dunes national lakeshore. We found the Lemon Drop Cottage on HomeAway and it looked like it had everything we needed, and it did not disapoint!
We were greated with a very clean, comfortable cottage and fresh jar of Blueberry Salsa on the kitchen table; it is to die for! The cottage is well furnished and has everything you'll need to have a great stay: cooking utencils, pots/pans, dishes, etc.
The master bedroom was very comfortable, and there was a standing oscillating fan in case it was too warm out. Although we didn't use this room at all, the second bedroom had a bunkbed and lots of spare blankets.
We spent most of our trip seeing the sites around the area, but ate all our meals at the cottage. The minifridge kept all our food nice and cool for the weekend, so don't be afraid to bring refridgerated items to cook. The only thing we couldn't find was a pair of scissors, but there were lots of knives to spare so that wasn't a problem.
The cottage felt very homey and was decorated with a nice lakeshore theme (lighthouses, beaches, ships, etc). There was a very nice striped carpet spread on the floor, which went very well with the wooden theme inside. The bathroom has a tile-edged stone floor that was a bit cold on the feet at night time, but looked absolutely stunning.
The surrounding area was very peaceful and we greatly enjoyed our time at Sleeping Bear dunes; climbing the dunes is quite the workout on your calves (be prepared!). The dune's scenic drive was absolutely beautiful with great views of the lakeshore and made for great pictures and memories.
Overall we were very happy with our stay at the Lemon Drop Cottage. It was a very peaceful relaxing getaway. I highly recommend this property!
This is a very sweet, cozy, and peaceful cottage just a short drive from one of the most beautiful shorelines in the country! It is just as advertised. In town with our toddler for a big family wedding, we most loved the peace and quiet of the cottage, nestled among big pines and forest. While not a large cottage, it has all the needed basics, and is a clean and comfortable place to rest after exploring the windswept dunes and spectacular beaches of Lake Michigan. We appreciated that it was so tidy, and that all the cleaning products are natural with low toxin. It is obvious that the owners care about the environment. We did not meet the owners, but we needed nothing and they were perfectly responsive and helpful with any questions we had before and during our stay. The cottage is in the woods but completely central to amazing sites - Esch beach - our favorite spot, sleeping bear dunes and the scenic drive, Point Betsie, trails to Empire bluffs, and North bar Lake. The tavern in Empire makes fantastic hamburgers and the owners make delicious preserves - we loved the organic tart cherry. Hope to come back to this wild and beautiful place.
If you want to stay near Sleeping Bear and don't want to camp, this is a beautiful place to chill out and rejuvenate. The owners were helpful and responsive, which made our stay truly delightful.
The cabin's kitchen is small, but very serviceable. It has a full stovetop and oven, and the selection of dishes was more than adequate for our needs.
The rest of the cabin would best be described as cozy but not cramped. There's not lots of extra room, but I didn't miss it either. Decorations were very thoughtful and tastefully done.
The only thing I would recommend prospective consider relates to the height of the shower head. I'm 5'11", and found the height less than ideal, but adequate. If you're much over six feet tall, be forewarned that this part of your stay will be less than ideal, maybe seriously so depending on how much you care about these things.
Having said that, I have no hesitation recommending Lemon Drop Cottage, will treasure my memories of the visit, and will definitely consider it again the next time we return to the Sleeping Bear Dunes area, the best-kept secret in the Midwest.
The Lemon Drop Cottage was small, but clean, well kept, and comfortable. It was able to provide all my husband and I needed for a week away to enjoy the national lake shore and surrounding region. The cottage was secluded and peaceful, but only a short distance from beaches and hiking trails. It is also a reasonable drive to get to Traverse City and the Leelanau peninsula.
You can probably find a lot "fancier" accommodations in the region, but if you are an adult looking for a quiet place to get a way to relax/recharge or a family with young children, it's perfect.
We had a great time at the "Lemon Drop" and visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes. To be honest, it was even better than I expected. Although it's tiny, it had everything we needed and was nice and clean. We stayed two nights and the accommodations were perfect for our family (2 adults, 3 children under 6). Lots of land to run around on. The owners children where also very friendly and even gave us a short tour of their farm and chicken coop! We hope to make back again next year!
This place is a winter and summer wonderland. Our cottage is a small 50's style with much character and in the woods. We’re surrounded by a 70,000 acre national park (Sleeping Bear Dunes) and thousands of acres of state land. There’s plenty of skiing, canoeing, hiking and fishing, peace and quiet. We’re close to Traverse City and Leelanau County, the best of wine regions this side of the Mississippi. Honor Michigan is 7 miles to the south and was rated in Field and Stream Magazine as the best all around recreation spot in the country and was named by ABC's Good Morning America 's 'Most Beautiful Place in America.'
This cottage we completely remodeled to green building standards and we clean with non-toxic cleaners. It may be suitable for people with allergies or chemical sensitivities. Our NO PETS/NO SMOKING policy is not negotiable.
While this is a very rural setting we request that you abide by our peace and quiet policy: No loud music, fireworks,
