This Historic Old Hawaiian style home was built in 1890. It is situated on 1 acre of land directly overlooking Hilo Bay. A large covered Lanai allows you the prestige first class views of the morning sunrises, surfers, canoe paddlers and ocean loving individuals who frequent the ocean throughout the day.
Whales can be seen jumping starting as early as March.
Garden like setting offers an abundance of tropical foliage such as plumeria, ginger, Ti leaves, lime tree, orange trees and banana. Enjoy what the the Lanai has to offer with outside seating for lounging and afternoon tea, or a glass of red wine.
This home is a five minute walk to Historic downtown Hilo crossing the famous iron bridge locals call the ' singing bridge'.

Aloha! I am a local resident born and raised here in Hawai'i. I have happy dogs, several chickens, goats and horses. I still love to ride my horse, go the beach and simply be with my family. You can often find me working around my home and tending to our animals. I love to travel, and enjoy the simple things in life.
The Owner purchased this house in 1890
This was my grandfather's home which later became my mother's home of which I was raised in. It offers the splendor of the yester-years. My family has been in Hawai`i for over 6 generations. I am happy to share the Aloha of this beautiful home with others, the Hawaiian way.
Each room is unique with furnishings from the past such as a Koa 4 poster King size bed, and twin beds dated back as far as 1900's. High ceilings throughout the home. Hand painted floral designs on the walls in the living room, dinning room and family room. Koa panels surround the family room. Simple kitchen well equipped that leads to the laundry room, twin beds and back yard.
This is Hawaii! I wanted to tell everyone we met during our trip where we were staying. The house was amazing and the rich history was the cherry on top. I would walk through the house just fascinated with all the pictures and wished they could talk and tell me the stories. The house is so well stocked I should have taken inventory before shopping. I packed my own beach towels but those were provided as well. You had everything a visitor could possibly need. The location was so close to town. We would walk into town for an ice cream or something quick. We cooked or grilled all our meals and ate on the beautiful porch. My children played in the yard after our day at the beach. We played many card games on the porch while we watched the ships, kayaks and boats in the bay. Work up every morning for the Hawaiian sunrise. Highly recommend your house to anyone planning a trip to Hilo. Cannot wait to come back.
The house was absolutely beautiful! Much more spacious than we expected. The porch was our favorite part, we grilled every night. The view was amazing. Absolutely loved it and would absolutely stay again!
We had a blast on our trip to the big island! What a wonderful place to finally be able to see and experience. Our stay at this house was better than we were expecting. The pictures didn't seem to do justice and noticed that right when we stepped onto the property. The porches were our favorite part. Being on a 5 hour difference we woke up and watched the sunrise every morning over the Hilo bay with Kona coffee and fresh fruit. It was amazing! This house without a doubt has the best location on the bay! Hands down. We enjoyed walking to the farmers market and picking up fresh food and gifts and eating at the many awesome cafes. Everything we ate in Hilo was top notch! It really felt like a privilege to stay at this house with all the history and getting the honor to meet Pudding!! She was a highlight of our trip. She was so nice to us. We traveled for 15 hours and showed up at the house and she greeted us with soup, beer and some amazing stories. If and when we come back we will schedule our trip dates around the availability of this house. Much love to the family for opening up their house to us! MAHALO!!
A gem of a historic Hawaiian home, built in the 1890's and carefully maintained in an old-world reflection of elegance and grace. A spacious 4-bedroom, with a cook's kitchen and a dining room table so nice you may even be reluctant to use it! However, the signature joy of this home is the large brick and stone lanai terrace directly overlooking Hilo Bay. It has an outside table for dining and many chairs for morning coffee and evening cocktails while enjoying expansive views of the bays and the outrigger canoe clubs practicing on the water (which we did each day!). The location to the Hilo attractions is prime too, just up the main road from the shops, restaurants and the famous Hilo Farmer's Market (you can actually walk there, as I did one day), but to drive into town is only a few minutes over the "singing bridge". "Pudding" Lassiter was a gracious host and a pleasure to deal with. We recommend this home highly, especially for those who wish to experience a unique property in a great location with built-in charm and an amazing view (in lieu of another cookie-cut accommodation). As the site description indicates, this home sits directly on the bay, but on a bluff about 60 feet up from the water so guests with smaller children may wish to keep this in mind!
Just returned from a wonderful trip to Hawaii and am so happy to have found this historic house site to enjoy my vacation. Overall, the house was very clean, tidy, and exactly as described. It is within a 10 minute drive from the airport and is easy to find. Downtown Hilo is just a 1/2 mile walk away with lots of delicious local eateries, three convenient grocery stores, plus the great farmer's market close by. The house itself has been recently updated and is in the process of renovation, including all of the bathrooms and kitchen supplies. There is a gorgeous front patio overlooking the bay... I think we ate almost every meal out there. It's a beautiful way to start the day with some tea, fresh fruit from the market (mango, pineapple, apple banana) and a Hawaiian sunrise!. The beds were very comfortable and the bedrooms are spaced far enough apart so everyone had their own privacy. I loved all the old furniture in the house, it felt like I was in a museum. And the hand-painted walls of native plants were absolutely gorgeous and added to the uniqueness of the house! I would DEFINITELY stay here again and would recommend this accommodation to anyone looking to stay in a beautiful Hawaiian home. One thing to be noted is be aware of bringing little kids as the house is located on a cliff side and there is a sheer drop-off in front of the house. The owners have put a little fence up which may help, but still be cautious. Overall, It is an older home with great charm and if that is something you want to experience in the old Hawaiian way, then this is the house for you.
We couldn't believe this house is available to rent. Not only does it have beautiful views of Hilo bay, a gorgeous covered lanai, and just a very short walk to all the conveniences of downtown Hilo...it's a HOME filled with the unique history of a long time kama'aina family. The house is cozy and comfortable, and at the same time has decor and artifacts worthy of a museum. You'll get a rare piece of Hawaiian history seeing old documents, paintings and photos, as well as saddles and riding accoutrements. You can feel Old Hawaii in this house...full of Aloha, good times, tough times, and everything in between.
We were raised and currently live in Hilo, and rented this space for some visiting friends. We gathered with several other Hilo residents, and everyone was touched by being there.
Thank you so much to the owners for allowing us to have this experience. We are so grateful that they are willing to share this precious piece of family history with us. We look forward to renting this home again someday soon!
