Schleusingen is located on the southern slope of the Thuringian Forest and is surrounded by wooded hills. It is a small medieval city, with approximately 5000 inhabitants. The icon of Schleusingen is the Bertholdsburg Castle, which was built between 1226 and 1232 and was the residence of the earls of Henneberg. Today the castle provides space for a Natural History Museum of Southern Thuringia. From Schleusingen, many famous sights in Thuringia can be easily reached by car, including cultural and sporting events. Day-trips can be planned to the Wartburg Castle, the theater of Meiningen, the winter sports city of Oberhof, the UNESCO biosphere-reservation Vessertal, and much more. In addition, there is a well maintained hiking trail along the Rennsteig--the most famous and longest mountain trail of Germany. For young guests, there are the Rennsteigtherme Oberhof (indoor swimming pool), the Cineplex Suhl (movie theatre), or the Kart-Track in Meiningen.
