This beautiful and meticulously maintained cottage comfortably sleeps 7 with an updated, classy Maine decor and offers great sunsets across nearby islands. Check our website by clicking on the link below. It is located on a quiet cove and named for the osprey that soar above looking for fish. It is 4 scenic miles from downtown Boothbay Harbor, an adorable Maine village full of great shops, restaurants, bars and ice cream. The cottage is a fresh, quiet Maine getaway minutes from all kinds of fun activities, a dream vacation spot! It's just about a mile the amazing Maine Botanical Gardens! Located at the end of a private road on beautiful Sawyers Island (accessible by car! No boat needed!) in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, it sits ten feet from the ocean. Recently renovated, the cottage is light and airy and offers lots of privacy. Unlike many Maine cottages it is fully equipped with all of the amenities you would need and want including hi-speed wireless internet and cable. It has a fully equipped eat-in kitchen with ocean views and is thoughtfully furnished with 100% cotton 650 thread sheets, fresh new towels and new mattresses that are incredibly comfortable (this is so important to us when we travel too!). The grounds are perfect for those heated croquet games and lobster cook outs. This cottage and setting is the exact setting you've been dreaming of. The dock has provided our own children with their private star gazing spot, try it.
The large master bedroom has a queen size bed, high-end reading lights and private sitting area (we all need to escape now and then...). The cottage has a dock and float (with swim ladder) to make kayaking, looking at the seals or picnicking on the islands and water sports an easy pleasure. The dock is accessible by boat at quarter tide or above and flats out for part of the tide cycle. For boaters there is even a mooring included with the cottage! Cozy up infront of the gorgeous wood stove and there is a heating unit as well. The Boothbay Region offers a wide variety of summer activities and diversions and is near great shopping in Freeport and LL Bean. Portland is an easy hour and 15 minute drive from Boothbay. The ferry to Monhegan Island leaves from Boothbay and is a favorite day trip. Camden and Rockport are also easy and fun day trips from the house. It is a destination vacation spot for those in the know looking for a quiet relaxing time.

Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park is just a side day trip away.
Many art studios are available all along the Maine coast. The famous Farnsworth Gallery in Rockland houses numerous Wyeth family paintings.
We are a retired couple (but not 'over the hill' or so our kids tell us anyways), both us grew up in Maine and we finally fulfilled our dream of retiring home to Maine! This cottage was our family cottage and we raised our children on summers here (this is a photo of myself and our new granddaughter, Norah). I am from Southwest Harbor, on Mount Desert Island and come from a long line of sea captains. My wife grew up on a multi-generational dairy farm that is still operational and in the family! We understand the beauty of Maine and we know what families, couples and friends are looking for in a vacation. We live in the Boothbay area and are available when ever you need us but we are unobtrusive home owners! We hope you come and enjoy the magic of Osprey Watch!
Charlie Birlem purchased this cottage in 1985
This is a stunning, private and quiet setting on desirable Sawyers Island (accessible by car). It is near the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, the unique Trevett Country Store, yet not far from 'downtown Boothbay Harbor'. There are many opportunities for walking, photography and kayaking from our float. We are surrounded by islands and there are many seals on the ledges just off this setting. You will hear them barking at night.
The views are always interesting and vary during the day as the cottage faces southwest. Evening sunsets can be spectacular and there is a good deal of boat traffic across the head of the cove - both tour boats from the harbor and local fishing boats.
My wife, dog and I vacationed here the week of Labor Day, and are already looking forward to returning again. It truly felt like our home way from home, with every amenity one needs and more. The cottage was thoroughly clean and comfortable, providing the perfect place to sit in the quiet and watch boats go by, or serve as a jumping off point to downtown and the many wonderful parks and trails the area provides. Charlie was great and offered some tips for attractions / things to do / etc. I definitely recommend this cottage to anyone looking to experience Maine in an ideal setting.
Osprey Watch is a wonderful cottage. It is very spacious, clean, in an excellent location on the water but within 5-10 mins of downtown. The owners, Charlie and Ellen will make you feel at home. Three things you must do here: 1. Visit several of the local preserve/trails - they are excellent. 2. Get a fish and chips from "Bets Fish Fry - with the dill sauce. 3. Get a Latte or Chai and whatever baked good is fresh from Red Cup Coffeehouse - all worth your while!
This is a wonderful 4-bedroom cottage on a private cove near Boothbay Harbor. The cottage is well-kept and comfortable and extremely well stocked. It seemed our every vacation need had been anticipated! The cottage is in a quiet spot and offers complete privacy but is also convenient to exploring the surrounding area. We enjoyed our daily excursions and loved the Boothbay Harbor area. We equally enjoyed returning to the Osprey Watch cottage every night. It's welcoming and comfortable and provided a lovely home base for us while in Maine. I would highly recommend this property to anyone wishing to visit Maine. The cottage is perfect and dealing with the owners was a pleasure.
This is a terrific rental in a beautiful spot. Pluses: Great views from the house, well-equipped kitchen, great deck, clean and well-maintained, decent furnishings and decor, good location on the coast. And Charlie is an excellent owner/host who is extremely helpful with recommendations. Cons: House is awkwardly laid out with the bedrooms and half-bath upstairs and the full bath downstairs. The stairs are very steep and were a challenge for my 81-year-old mother. The dock is in the mud at low tide. There was one set of bath towels per bed -- more would be good. There also were *a lot* of check-out instructions. I'd definitely stay here again -- not trying to be ultra-picky, just presenting the situation.
My family and I stayed at Osprey Watch this past summer ('12). It is a wonderful home to spend time in and also as a stepping off point for enjoying Boothbay and the surrounding area.
The house was very clean, well maintained and big enough that my family of four was well able to enjoy time together while not feeling like we were on top of one another. The kids enjoyed their own rooms as well as a wonderful reading nook/fort that owner Charlie Birlem built for his own kids above one of the rooms. And, for those evenings in or quiet days at home, there is a living room, two reading/TV areas and a wonderful deck that looks out over the water. The kitchen is spacious and well equipped.
The house is located on Sawyer's Island - probably less than a mile by bridge to the town as well as the Maine Botanical Garden - and is splendidly quiet and removed from the crowds. It has a wonderful view of several islands. One day we rented kayaks and paddled out to 4 or 5 of them as well as one of the low water areas where seals congregate. We saw at least 10 seals at one, some of them swimming close to our kayak. It was really a perfect locale for staying at home at relaxing or getting out to see the surrounding area.
And the Birlem's are absolutely wonderful hosts. They were very responsive in answering any questions we had, and went out of their way to meet our needs. They even brought stuffed animals as gifts for our young children. Charlie was raised on MDI and even took a lot of time to talk with us about where we should go when we visit there in summer, 2013.
We had a wonderful time at Osprey Watch and look forward to returning when we next visit Boothbay.
We stayed at Osprey Watch in July of 2012. The cottage is absolutely darling. Thoughtfully furnished and what a view! Boothbay Harbor is a great little town with wonderful restaurants, shopping and dayboats. The setting is beautiful and not too crowded. The cottage is tucked into a nice little cove and is a short bike ride away from town. We plan to return in the coming years. You simply could not ask for a more delightful little cottage!
Located on the beautiful Boothbay peninsula along the western shore among a group of islands. All you will see from the cottage are islands, boats and seals.
Other Activities: Kayaking
