In 1989 our family came to Flathead Lake for our first reunion. The impact of this event was so profound that six months later our father bought property on the lake and built The Last Best Place. Our father’s dream was to have a place where his family would want to come together every year near Bigfork, Montana, U.S.A.
Deb Idler purchased this house in 1990
Our family has been blessed to have this opportunity come true. In 1997 our father sustained a stroke, which limited his ability to enjoy The Last Best Place. It brought to our attention the importance of barrier free design and accessing the beautiful outdoors. Our family wants to make a difference to the lives of others with disabilities that visitthe Flathead Lake area by accommodating their needs.
“It is our vision and mission to make this place available to other families, particularly those who may have a physical impairment, and to provide an opportunity to share the magic our family experiences each and every year.” The Idler Family
I was blown away by how beautiful and cozy this gorgeous home was. The view from that enormous back deck was spectacular! It was very clean, spacious, and the fully-stocked kitchen was very accommodating and much appreciated. My friends and I had the time of our lives and made many fond memories. Leaving was hard :( I would love to come back to this home with my friends for more good times, and I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a spectacular Montana experience.
Our group of 12 visited Flathead Lake and Bigfork, MT for the 4th of July weekend. We had an absolutely perfect visit due in part to the wonderful cabin known as The Last Best Place! The Idler family has done an amazing job of providing a beautiful cabin that is overflowing with amenities! The cabin was well stocked and the kids had loads of fun swimming near the dock and using the kayak. The deck was a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the view of Flathead Lake. We rented a pontoon boat and a ski boat for 2 days - it was great to be able to keep the boats overnight right at the cabin. Bigfork was a short drive to the cabin, so it was very accessible for watching the 4th of July parade and picking up groceries. The fireworks in Lakeside were visible from the deck.
I don't know what else to say to describe how perfect our stay was. When our family travels to Flathead Lake again we would definitely want to stay at The Last Best Place again!
Thank you Idler Family for sharing your beautiful cabin!
Nine of us--including four boys from 10-12--had a great time there! Rented an extra cayak, got some light fishing gear (there was some there already) and the boys were set. They caught some fish, did lots of swimming, cayaking, and just hung out. Lots to do in the area, good restaurants at Bigfork, and great golf nearby. Pretty drive to Glacier, lots of wildlife to see and hiking to do. The house was perfect for our needs (the boys pulled the bedding from the bunk room and turned the loft into a great place to hang out and sleep (with a little movie viewing thrown in), and there was always enough going on that they didn't get bored. Highly recommended for any family group!
The location, amenities and ambience of this property are first class. Truly, this venue provides everything that you might need for an exceptional, self-contained retreat. Should you feel the need, the Flathead Valley, with all its splendours and diversions, provides ample opportunity to explore, experience and expand your new horizons.
Wonderful time, lifetime memories ...
Honestly one of the most relaxing places I have ever had the opportunity to visit. Spending a sunny afternoon overlooking pristine waters and gorgeous mountains truly is a treat at this fabulous cabin getaway.
High blood pressure? I think mine dropped 10 points after just stepping onto the balcony! The home feels warm, inviting and completely peaceful. The renovations that the owners have done are perfectly suited to match the overall feeling of Montana living. The pictures do not do this outstanding property justice! I would definitely recommend this place to my family and friends!
What a gem! I actually stayed here before the renovations and modifications were made and the place more than lives up to its description. I can see what has been achieved (as shown in posted images) versus my minds-eye recollections of the property when I stayed there. It is both easily accessible as well as secluded with a well-treed lot and access down a well-built driveway. The neighboring, adjacent properties on either side are privately owned and the residents quiet, discrete and respectful. If you have any previous experience staying at any other northwestern US or western Canadian lakeside property, I am sure you will come away from a visit here agreeing that (of its kind) it ranks in the top ten places to stay anywhere in the Pacific Northwest. Even if you don’t fill it to capacity and the weekly rental costs are shared between two or three couples, it is a complete bargain. Look at the companion property (320751) where I’ve also stayed, which sleeps 8, and book both for a large or multi-family house party fo9r up to 18 people. The property is clean and well maintained (it has been extensively renovated) and the owners couldn't be more helpful when it comes to providing specific information on what the region has to offer the holiday-maker on a year-round basis.
