|Minimum Stay||5 - 7 nights|
Roatan is in the Bay Islands of Honduras and is the best kept secret of Central America. It is like stepping back in time. Please view our new video of the island and the house. Our property is professionally managed by Ruth and Brad of Island House Roatan Management company.
The house includes an outdoor kitchen & beach bar in front of the house with a Napoleon Grill with a searing station, double rotisserie and wood smoking tray. We also utilize a solar array for our hot water needs.
A biodegradable and pet friendly mosquito misting system has been installed and is working with excellent results. The yard has banana, mango, almond, coconut, noni, and various other local fruit trees and the endangered Emerald Hummingbird hangs out quite frequently at the many Hibiscus plants we have and they are not camera shy.
This house has two bedrooms upstairs, each with a king bed. The living, kitchen and dining rooms are on the upper level as well with central AC. There are two additional bedrooms downstairs; one with a king bed, the second with two singles, there's a bathroom which joins these two lower level bedrooms. Both rooms have AC.
If four bedrooms is not enough for your group, there is a separate private apartment available that will sleep four to six (two queen beds, a new queen sleeper and 2 foam pads available for children) and has 2 separate AC units.
Our neighbors live in Roatan full time and are right next door for any emergency or help with anything on the island. They are the nicest people you will meet. They help provide security and stability in our neighborhood and are always willing to help out our guests. They can provide fishing charters and are quite knowledgeable about all the local fish.
Yoni, who is our full time caretaker, speaks some English, but his first language is Spanish. He loves to fish and may tell you some of his fishing secrets. He lives on site and maintains the premises and grounds, and provides night time security by living in the rear of the property with his two young children and wife. He makes sure everybody is safe and sound, including our guests.
You can walk down the beach for breakfast and then return to the house, grab your gear and snorkel at one of the worlds nicest beaches, 'West Bay Beach', it is a short walk (1/2 mile) from the house; the diving, snorkeling and sunbathing are excellent here. Or you could snorkel out (400 yards) in front of the house, to the Mesoamerican barrier reef, the worlds second largest barrier reef. The translucant turquoise water's here have a average temperture of 80 F / 27 C. The fishing is excellent for Mahi-Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, Barracuda, Sailfish and Wahoo, which are very abundant in these waters.
On the walk between the house and West End there are some rock outcroppings that you will have to walk over, or if the tide is out you can walk around them in shallow water. On the walk along the beach to West Bay, there is a metal bridge that you will have to use.
Or if walking isn't for you, just stand on the end of our dock and flag down a water taxi.
After an afternoon of snorkeling, you can walk to town for the evening dinner and night life, then take a cab home, or stay at home and enjoy the beautiful sunset and grill your fresh caught seafood for dinner!
The sunsets are what this house is famous for; it's right on the beach and has a dock and palapa to sit under and sip your drinks while watching the sunset! The warm tropical air and warm water will entice you every time.
Although there is a dock at the house, it is not a private dock. In fact no dock on the island is private. You may find that locals will use it to have a break on their walk between West End and West Bay, they never stay long and are always very friendly.
Local charter companies will schedule a pick up at our dock for any diving, fishing or island adventure excursions you may have.
If you are not renting a car, the property managers can arrange your ride from/to the airport (which is recommended). At the time you make these arrangements they will let you know the cost. Otherwise, there are always taxis waiting at the airport and you can negotiate you own fare. If you do decide to rent a vehicle, it is recommended that you rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle, due to the road being in poor condition during the rainy season. Remember there are no house numbers of street names on the island, so at times the taxis will need some directions to the house.
We have just added, for rent a 13' Hobie Cat Wave sailboat.
Our large local grocery stores are going green - they've recently stopped using plastic bags. We recommend you bring some re-usable shopping bags with you.
Please come and visit us in Roatan, Honduras. Your next adventure to fun and sun!
*** PLEASE NOTE ***
Published rates are for the Upper Level 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom (main floor). Additional bedrooms can be added for an additional charge. Please scroll to the 'notes' beneath the rate chart to view the costs of differing options.

Purchased in 2008, I love Roatan! The first time I walked through the door I knew I was home. Gail and I have put our own special touches into this house and we both hope all who stay here enjoy themselves.
Brad & Ruth purchased this house in 2008
The diving, snorkeling & fishing are fantastic. The local people are so friendly. The fish and lobster are always fresh and the morning walks on the beach is one of my favorites.
The swimming and snorkeling are the best there is! The dock has a palapa to sit under to get out of the sun (with a hammock which hangs partially over the water). If you like the sun, there is a large swimming platform which is a great place to get a tan or to cannonball from (to splash all those tanning bodies). Or just relax on one of our water loungers. Don't forget to take the portable speaker with you to enjoy some music while on the dock. Fresh drinks are only a few steps away at the new beach bar.
The beautiful beachfront house is excellent for some r&r but also ideally located to go out for day trips snorkeling, scuba diving, ziplining etc. Watet taxis come by regularly but you can easily walk or kayak to the little towns on either side of the house. Lots of new renovations have been done to the house and the pride of ownership shows. The swimming was great and sitting out under the stars at night was spectacular. I would recommend this property to anyone. Spectacular!
The memories of Sunset House are still fresh in my mind since my last & only visit. It’s been awhile since I’ve been there with friends & I can still feel the warm sun & water calling me back. What’s not fabulous about this place? The beach is there, yes right there as you step outside. Steps away to the clear blue water, a little longer if you want to jump off the dock. There’s the white sand under foot whether walking on it or playing volleyball or badminton. The outdoor breakfast/brunch and dinner nook as I call it (lol) was a favorite spot to start off & finish the days with friends. I tell yah, those ‘monkey-lah-lahs’ always went down best when lounging in the hammocks or floating on the water while watching the tropical wildlife under you & WOW what a variety of tropical life around you. Roatan is a haven for snorkelers & scuba divers but you don’t have to be one to visit. I was a first time snorkeler & couldn’t get enough of it. The varieties of tropical fish (just like Nemo), the coral comes in all shapes & sizes & then there are starfish. I actually held one in my hand & man they are heavy. While coming home from a snorkeling expedition, dolphins swam along-side the boat; flying fish travelling distances out of the water …. See I told you it is still fresh in my mind.
The town is not far from the house & local entertainment & restaurants are in abundance. The grocery stores carry pretty much what we have here in Canada & then some! You will need vehicle to get to where you are going whether you rent a car or use the water taxis. Sunset House is close to everything & far enough away from public tourism giving you the privacy you seek. You can walk along the beach from the house to West Bay in bare feet but I advise you to wear sandals because at times there are rocks you need to walk over & a bridge made of medal. Local vendors offer shopping & we caught a water taxi back from the West Bay beach.
Sunset House has all the amenities of home –washer, dryer, air conditioning, etc. Drinking water is in good supply. They have this amazing bug repellent system in place; an outdoor shower, picnic tables, sports equipment.... The property is well cared for by the owners & property managers. The grounds are attended to daily but it’s up to you to clean-up after your meals after all this is your home for the time you are there! Last thing said; go to Sunset House, Roatan. You won’t regret it & when you are through you’ll be begging to go back for more!
This was our fourth stay at Sunset house and I wanted to stay.....forever. What a GREAT time!! I loved sitting on the porch, in the hammocks or on the dock. If the sun was too bright at sunset just close the curtains, you can still see through them and enjoy beach without the blinding sun. The house is so comfortable with king size beds; clean sheets the ability to do laundry on site, the full size kitchen, all the comforts of home including AC. We stopped at the grocery store when we arrived and bought enough food for our stay. We did plan on eating out and were not disappointed with the selection of restaurants and they employ the nicest wait staff. The Thai restaurant was my favorite. The chicken dishes tasted so fresh and cooked to perfection. I had many of the chicken dishes along with the vegetables (many locally grown) but I still ate healthy. The fresh fish, shrimp never get old and are prepared by cooks who know how to cook. The breakfast burritos where the best ever. I had lots of exercise between the swimming, snorkeling, renting the sail boat, using the various floatation devices (water saddle was my favorite) and just walking. The horseshoe pits are a nice addition and we would have played more but there was just so much to do. I would be remiss not to mention the sunsets, we sat out on the dock many a night just waiting for the sun to set so we could take pictures and admire Gods handy work. The way the moon lays in the sky is at such a different angle than at home. Yonny (the caretaker) was very helpful, he set us up with a fishing trip and we shared the fish with him. The MahiMahi was delicious. The various native birds delight me every time. We had TV but didn't bother watching it, the internet for checking emails, books to read and board games to play. The bar and BBQ on the beach are great you don't have to upstairs to have dinner and a drink. Taking a shower before even coming upstairs was a nice amenity. Be sure to dip your feet in the water dish before coming inside to keep those pesky sand fleas off your feet and out of the house. Mark has done a wonderful job at making this place not only a home away from home but a home to back to.
We had such a wonderful time during our 8 night stay at Sunset House. We had a group of 8 and rented both the main house and the guest house. We enjoyed relaxing on the porch, in the hammocks, and on the dock under the palapa. The bar with the grill is great too. The house is well kept and looks even better than in the photos!
Yoni (probably not how it's spelled but how it sounds) is the property caretaker who lives in the lower level of the guest house. He takes excellent care of the house and grounds. He went fishing with us and cut down some coconuts for us to try! He rakes the sand every day and is always there if you need him.
We had two meals prepared by chef Blackie's service and they were both outstanding. We highly recommend the coconut shrimp and garlic cream shrimp!
Junior the concierge set us up with a great snorkeling trip. He handled everything that we needed and was always available by phone and email. Both Junior and Ruth were very helpful when one of our guests needed medical attention. If you find yourself needing to see a doctor, the public clinic at Anthony's Key Resort is the place to go.
Chris and his family next door are very generous and helpful. Everyone else we met who lived in the area was also very kind.
The house is located about half way between West End and West Bay beach. You can walk to either although the walk to West End is more difficult due to rocky outcrops, but it can be done. The walk to West Bay is easier and we did it several times at night in a group and felt very safe. Definitely bring flash lights for walking at night. From what we saw, Sunset House was the nicest rental between West End and West Bay. Water taxi's go by frequently and are an easy way to get to West End or West Bay for about $3 per person. The house comes with a cell phone that you can take with you when you go out which was a great feature.
Some from our group kayaked to the reef in front of the house and snorkeled there. It's not that far and definitely do-able.
We can't say enough great things about our stay at Sunset House and would definitely recommend it to anyone planning a Roatan vacation!
Great place, as adverstized and has everything you need to make an enjoyable vacation. Nine of us stayed for a week, six adults and three kids under 8. Felt like a very safe location and many of the neighbours will come by and say hello. We rented vehicles, not that we needed them a whole lot, but the covenience factor was well worth it.
Would have given 5 stars, but the upstairs air conditioning was not working properly.
This was my third stay at the Sunset House and I decided to stay in the back apartment above the caretakers quarters. It was great! The "Turtle Apartment" Has a full kitchen, full bath and two AC units! There is a very comfy couch that folds out into a bed in the living room too (not shown in the photos or video). My friends were staying in the main house and I didn't book until a week before my trip. The owners were very accommodating with my late booking by the way, no stress whatsoever.
Now for the updates... every time I come back there are updates... i love this place...
Solar Panels: The new solar panels keep the hot water hot... even outside in the outdoor shower. These are only on the main house (not the Turtle Apartment) however.
New Bathroom: The owners added a new bathroom in the back part of the main house so you don't need to go inside or upstairs if your just running in from snorkeling or swimming. Makes it really convenient when nature calls.
The Sailboat: I rented the 15 foot Hobie Cat one day and had so much fun I rented it again the following day. It's really easy to use and sooo much fun. It seats 4 but goes a lot faster with just 2 people... or even faster with just one person!!!
New paint and rugs and shades in the main house. Very nice updates! See the video for the latest.
AC: The two new AC units in the Turtle Apartment work great! They have remote controls and keep the apartment very comfy during the night. There is also a new fan in the downstairs bedroom (of the main house) fixed to the wall.
Staying in the back apartment was great. I really felt like one of the locals (not a tourist) and enjoyed getting to know the neighbors. Joni the caretaker lives downstairs and is extremely helpful with whatever you need. The entire estate is very safe.
My only complaint would be that I only stayed for one week... I need to stop doing this. Book the Sunset House for two weeks. TRUST ME. Overall I highly recommend the Sunset House and everything you see in the pictures and video is 100% accurate.
Just back from a week at Sunset House and can't say enough nice things about it.
You can see all its many features in the listing: This is just to confirm that they are just as nice as you're imagining (not always true of vacation home listings!)
We rented the upper part of the house for a family of four and found the house, its amenities, the location, and everyone involved just great.
One thing you can't tell from the pictures though: The house is not isolated- it's has neighbor houses quite nearby on either side. This may not be what you envisioned, but it's a real bonus: The on-site caretaker and the neighbors are all friendly and helpful and add greatly to your sense of relaxation and security. If you had any concerns about security (being on a quiet stretch of beach a good walk away from any town), this is a big plus and should go a long way towards resolving them. And you'll still feel like the beach is yours alone.
All in, we'd recommend the house very highly!
