Photos and Description of the Baltimore vacation apartment rental
Apartment, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath,

The Artist Loft is a second floor apartment (separate street entrance through a court yard) consisting of 2 bedrooms and one bath in The Fells Point Bakery. It originally was where the dry goods (flour, sugar, etc.)

were stored for the bakery directly below it. Built in 1924 specifically as a bakery, the building now houses

apartments while the store front is an active art studio. The building is at the corner of Fleet & S. Chapel. Entrance to The Artist Loft is through the court yard and up covered exterior stairs! See the photo layout sketch of the two rooms making up the apartment.

Our market is the executive or any person on assignment for one or more months in Baltimore.

To concentrate on this market we have only limited availability for weekly renters.

Our guests in town for a long work assignment have different needs than a tourist here for a week or so.

Large unique layout to stretch out in!

Lots of exposed brick and planked wood!

Huge oil paintings, and furnishings to give the place that special appeal!

'A Vertical Kitchen' (trademarked), a new concept in

kitchen design of the owner transforming small kitchens from dull normal to very cool, which will happen after the current tenant leaves in March 2013.

Photos are of the current kitchen.

We provide our guests with the opportunity to tell their story (who and why they are here) as part of our cultural series held in one of Fells Points famous restaraunt/bars {think mussels).

About Dean Hill

The owner was born and raised in Sioux City Iowa in 1935. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1957 and followed two sisters to the Washington DC to go to law school (Georgetown Law School 1962.) They came to Wash. D.C. in 1941 and 1943 to join the war effort. Actually, the oldest was drafted into the civil service in the latter part of December 1941 upon receiving a draft notice to report to a specific agency (Foreign Funds Control) a very small agency under the White House but not located in The White House. Before graduating from high school in June of 1941, she, along with thousands of other graduating coeds through out the country were required to take the civil service examination in anticipation the US would enter the World War II which it did with the attack on Pearl Harbor. The older sister found a job for the younger sister with the Federal Communications Commission two years later who eventually married a professional consulting radio engineer who was establishing his own practice representing applicants and licensees of AM & FM radio stations and eventually television stations before the FCC. The owner worked for him before and while attending law school. Upon graduating from law school he opened his own specialized law practice before the FCC subleasing a room from an established lawyer in the same field . He comes from 3rd generation immigrants from Germany Sweden and England grandparents who immigrated in the 1890's as young children with their parents. We are a nation of immigrants and my story is no different or any more unusual than of any other immigrant family.

Dean Hill purchased this apartment in 1979
Why Dean Hill chose Baltimore

This was the owner's first of three Baltimore properties purchased in 1979 and the only one he has kept. He has acquired many close friends in Baltimore while practicing law in Washington DC. Over the past several years he has closed out his rental properties in the Wash DC/Northern VA area including his residence and his office condo off of DuPont Circle and now resides in Fells Point where he manages his furnished rental units.

What makes this apartment unique

Fells Point is where visitors to Baltimore want to stay. You have walking/jogging trails along the water - west to the Inner Harbor and east to Canton. You can walk down to the Fells Point Harbor in the morning, enjoy your beverage and experience what it was like to wake up a historic waterfront city. Owner supplies suggested day trips to nearby historic sites such as Gettysburg Pa. and Antietam Md.

Amazing Landlord!!

Our experience in Baltimore would have been lacking had we not stayed in this wonderful apartment/location. 'Dino' was very eager to help us find places to go & things to do. He was like having our own personal tour guide!! I couldn't tell someone as much about my own city as he told us about Baltimore! We were walking distance to the Bay, to Fell's Point Square, to Canton, Little Italy, Harbor East (nice shopping & dining), and really the Inner Harbor area too!! The Charm City Circulator (free bus system - 3 routes to choose from) was VERY easy to use & I wish we would have tried it earlier in our visit instead of fighting the parking throughout Baltimore. 'Dino' made great suggestions on wonderfully eclectic restaurants - Liquid Earth, Paper Moon, etc... The Broadway Markets of Fell's Point offer a large selection of taverns/grills frequented by locals & visitors regularly & have such an interesting vibe - great local for hanging out with friends!! We used the Water Taxi system, visited the National Aquarium, and really loved our stay. Our family of 5 fit comfortably (we brought a blow-up mattress with us for the 5th person & Dino was very accepting & accommodating! The Artist's Loft was a fabulous place to come home to each night with a great location & owner to boot! Thanks Dino!!

Owner's Response: The midwestern family came to support their son's 2nd Jr Olympics held in the
Baltimore suburbs. We can relate to their lifestyle since we hail also from the midwest. Encouraged the teenagers to try the sandwiches from one of the best vegan places on the east coast which they did. They were pleasantly surprised! Later rewarded them (heir dad picked up the check) by tagging along to one of funkiest "dinners" in America featured on the Food Channel. So they showed up with one extra guest. A little crowded but they did the best they could. Gave them the usual hospitality that our guests come to expect.

a wonderful place to stay, very attentive and careful owner !

I finally found the time to write down a review about this property. It was really a great stay ! I stayed at the Artist Loft for 3 months due to professional reasons and I can recommend it for everybody. First of all, the owner is very kind, helpful and attentive. He gave me a lot of (practical) information about the property, the neighbourhood and the city and he took a lot of time to solve my 'problems' or to answer my questions. It is really a luxurious thing to have a good personal contact with your owner, you never feel like a number here, but like a friend.

The Artist Loft itself is a nice place to stay with all the comfort and equipment you can wish for a longer stay. The kitchen is perfect to cook some larger dinners and there is enough place to store your food. The living space is very 'arty' and looks like a real loft, you have enough space and there is a good and updated heating/airco system with a security system against CO-intoxication. The bedroom area is very comfortable and there is more than enough space to put your clothing away, the bed itself feels very relaxing. Everywhere in the big room are 'trendy' brick walls and a nice wooden coverd roof, nice paintings of the son of the owner make it a really arty atmosphere. The double shower in the bathroom is amazing and you have equipment for washing and drying. The desk / bunk room is very practical when you stay there - like me - for professional reasons. You have a nice place to work, seperate from you living place. In the bunk smaller area you can relax a little bit in the chairs or you can transform it to a guest room when you have some visitors who wanna stay overnight.

The neighbourhood is really amazing, the property is settled in the historic Fells Point Area. It is situated in a long and small but quiet street but near the corner of the very busy Fleet Street. All the shops, bars and restaurants you need are on a walkable distance. To walk to the hospital medical campus of Johns Hopkins University tooks only around 15 minutes. A bus stop is behind the corner. Walking to the historic Inner Harbor site are Harbor East took no more than 20 minutes, so that is also very reasonable. The neighbourhood is very safe and I never had fear to walk around, day or night.

Needless to say I would recommend this play to stay ! I also wanna congratulate the owner, because he was given me a wonderful time in an amazing property.

Owner's Response: The nice thing about VRBO rentals is the interesting people you meet and their professional
interest that brings them to Baltimore Md. It does not take much in the way of additional effort to find out their other interests in order to give them choices on things to do on their non work hours. We respect our guests' privacy but let them know we are around the property everyday and that in the case of an emergency we want them to call on us 24/7.

Park your car and leave it until you're ready to go home. The neighborhood is safe. We walked to the Water Taxi (the best deal in Baltimore) which takes one all over the Inner Harbor, Fells Point, Ft. McHenry. Pay $10 and use the service from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. A bus stop is right at your door, too.

You can walk to a Whole Foods in about 15 minutes, and if you're up for a short hike, you can walk to the Inner Harbor in about 25 minutes. From the apartment, you are within easy walking distance of many excellent local restaurants and the harbor.

The accommodations are comfortable, clean. The washer and dryer are handy. The shower is wonderful. The sheets are very nice cotton. For being in the city, at night it's quiet, and we slept well. The kitchen is well equipped. You do have to walk up steps, but it was ok for this 61-yr.-old to do.

The owner lives on the premises and was extremely friendly and helpful, but did not disturb us at all. Having him there made me feel even more secure, but the neighborhood is safe, anyway. We walked around some after dark, and there were lots of people out, and we were not afraid.

The air conditioning worked like a charm during very hot weather.

For the price, this is an excellent deal.

Home Away From Home...but better!

On my last morning in the Artist Loft and drinking my coffee on the balcony, I can't help but reflect on the past week and a half.

This was my first time using For Rent By Owner and staying in Baltimore City. Additionally, I had some special needs for my trip and am a single female. Needless to say, I was apprehensive about using the service and staying outside of a hotel. The owner was quick to respond to my questions and extremely accommodating. I wouldn't have been able to make the trip otherwise.

The location is perfect. You can walk to anything in Baltimore. I drove in from out of state but rarely moved my vehicle, especially on the weekends. I felt safe, morning and night, and am going to miss running along the waterfront.

I don't think the pictures or description do the loft justice. It is amazing! The layout is great, the furnishings are perfect, and the feel is very warm, welcoming, and funky. This is definitely better than a stuffy, boring hotel. My friends who live in the area came over and they loved it too. Fortunately, the kitchen is extremely well equipped and I could prepare meals for several people. When I didn't want to cook, I walked across the street and had shrimp and steak at Ale Mary's or down the block to Captain James to sit outside and devour all-you-can-eat crabs smothered in old bay. Thank goodness for the full size washer and dryer because eating so much can get messy.

I didn't want for anything and absolutely enjoyed my time here. I will be back, no question in my mind.

Comfy loft - great location - right price!

My family of four (children are teens) stayed here for a week and thoroughly enjoyed the major highlights of Baltimore. The loft is located in Fells Point and is within walking distance of East Harbor, Barnes and Noble, Inner Harbor, Johns Hopkins, Canton, and Little Italy. Street parking is plentiful and hassle-free. Owner is easy going, responsive, and knowledgeable. New large flat screen and second tv were hits with the kids. Photos are spot on. Loft is artsy/homey, clean, well-stocked (kitchen and cleaning supplies). Beds and couch are comfortable. Having a full kitchen was great -- we saved tons of money and made the few times we ate out, all the more special. We enjoyed the leisurely pace and location. Residential area is very safe for evening walks/runs along the promenade (Canton to Fells Point). Safeway (0,5 mile) and Whole Foods (~1.0 miles) are walkable. Best place to crack crabs with a harbor view is Captain James (Crab House) at #14 Water Taxi stop - just a few blocks away (5 min leisurely walk). Be sure to check out the B&O railroad museum which has an extensive collection and is the best train museum we've ever seen! If you are looking for an easy, no-stress and affordable family vacation or an extended rental (Hopkins or business) this centrally located apartment fits the bill. We'll be back.

Owner's Response: This corporate client was able to squeeze in a week's vacation with her family before beginning
a three week course at JHH Bloomberg School of Public Health. She relocated to traditional corporate housing for the three weeks which provided her with such amenities as shuttle service, exercise room, etc. which we obviously can not provide while her family returned home. We were happy to accommodate her and her family, and that her two teenagers got the Fells Point experience including finding the nearly 100 year old political signage on the square. This is why Fells Point is Fells Point.
