Aspen wood ceilings, clear dug fir floors, plush furniture, a sprawling open kitchen with tons of counter space, classic decor, a deep cast iron tub and 21' cathedral ceilings were some of the reasons why this home was featured in The Aspen Sojourner magazine mid winter 2008 edition under 'In style, off the Grid.'
Every window projects it's astonishing natural beauty into the house weather you are in bed, on the couch reading your favorite book, in the rocking chair by the wood stove, or enjoying cooking or eating a meal.
This solar home puts you on the very threshold of access to pure mountain beauty and ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES FOR ADVENTURE.
Beaver dams and a thriving riparian habitat are so close you can see trout rise on the lake. Mist and fog rises from the waterfall and settles into the valley offering dynamic and constantly changing scenery.
13,000 foot mountains surround, offering 360' views of rugged alpine scenery. In floor radiant heat is a feature offering comfort in the cold of winter along with a wood burning stove. Perched on a promontory you can look down 1000 feet to the river, water fall and lake and up 4000 feet to surrounding peaks and cliffs.
Although all types of activities are always beckoning we find we don't want to leave the house as being home affords the opportunity to observe in comfort and luxury, after any number of mini-adventures. Hawks, falcons, elk, deer and fox are commonly seen from the house. Rainbows, dramatic thunder storms, blue bird sunny days from this vantage point are common. The view out every window is a masterpiece. The cabin is in a very sunny south facing location; offering ample sunlight in the winter, great fall color viewing in the fall.
Marble peak is one of the most popular back-country ski destination in Colorado. Do a visual check off the deck as it is a peak just south of the house, about 3 miles away.
Hikes to the Crystal mill (one of the most photographed spots in Colorado) near the old mining town of crystal takes you along the crystal river on the way to lead king basin or Crested Butte for wonderful wild flower viewing, or watch the aspen turn colors in the fall. Lizard lake is along this road as well.

I built this house to be in the mountains, on a mountain and surrounded by mountains and for its proximity to cultural and artistic events, restaurants and conveniences. It is a place of healing and this has always been important to me.
I have a degree in literature. General contracting....building solar homes etc, has been my livelihood for many years.
Currently, I am a certified yoga instructor and have a studio called Coredination in Carbondale where we offer Pilates, Yoga, tap, modern dance. Ballet classes are offered through our ballet school Bonedale Ballet. Please contact us if you are interested in receiving Pilates or yoga classes or any other classes we offer. Rates and scheduling available upon request and we can arrange classes at the cabin.
This house is in this special location because I was so inspired by the beauty that building it was non-negotiable. The location provides complete rejuvenation and inspires a deep connection to nature. This house is in a location where your mind can relax without distraction from the outside world. How rare in this day and age! Pick any mountain/alpine experience and it is here to refresh and invigorate you.
First and foremost, this house offers unparalleled views and is bathed in sun so it is a bright and cheery location. Secondly, you can access almost any outdoor mountain activity by walking. Ski Marble peak, the marble ski area, fish the Crystal river, dine at the Redstone Inn, visit the Marble quarry, view Colorado wild flowers, kayak the crystal river, rock climb, ice climb, hunt for elk, grouse or deer. Take Scofield pass to crested Butte via 4 wd, Ski Aspen, Highlands or Snowmass, Attend Carbondale mountain fair, Listen to the classical music or Jazz at Aspen music festival, Dine at any of the incredible restaurants in Carbondale.Horseback riding is available in Redstone.
Also, certain months out of the year a natural, free, public hot springs on the crystal river is available. Secondly, Avalanche hot springs (also 25 min. from the cabin) offers geothermal hot springs for 12.00 for adults. Open from 8 am- 6 pm daily, year round.
Food preparation in the spacious kitchen is a pleasure. A dip in the river, a ski, a hike or just lazing about will allow you to appreciate what this cabin has to offer. My wife and I are certified Pilates and yoga instructors ( a Pilates 'reformer' is at the Cabin). Inquiries are welcome for private classes and our class schedule @ our studio in Carbondale. A new Frisbee golf course has been established in a park in down town Marble.
We had a wonderful time at the cabin and enjoyed the beautiful views of the mountains. We hiked up the Crystal river and enjoyed seeing th foliage before all the leaves had fallen. This truely is a great place to come and unwind and experience the rocky mountains natural beauty. We certainly were lucky to have amazing weather as well. Hope to come again next year.!!
EXCEEDED ALL OUR POSSIBLE EXPECTATIONS.
Thanks, R and M
My trip to and stay at The Cabin in the Sky with its remote location in Marble presented me with some unique challenges that I couldn't have dreamed up if I had tried, but my cat, Phoenix, and I would do it all again in a heartbeat! In addition to it's beauty both inside and out, the house has a healing, nurturing and very relaxing energy and everything from watching the light change throughout the day, to being enveloped in stars at night, is awe inspiring. Anthony is a very kind, generous person and made sure that I was comfortable throughout my stay. I loved it here in the winter, and can't wait to return in the summer/fall to see the colors! What a gift this place is! Can't say enough, but you really have to experience it to understand it! Because of the remote location I recommend bringing food/supplies for a couple of days, especially in winter (there is no cell service outside of Carbondale). The roads into Marble are well maintained, but the private road up to the house is long and steep so a 4WD with decent snow tires is mandatory!! Once there the house is so cozy you won't want to leave :)
We stayed at the cabin for a vacation in July 2014. We had high hopes but our visit ended up being stressful and sometimes downright unpleasant. We left several days early.
The setting is truly gorgeous. The hummingbirds were plentiful--we filled and refilled the feeder for them. The barbecue restaurant in Marble was a fun and friendly place.
The trouble began when we decided to have three of our grown children join us for part of our vacation. We naively thought this would be okay but the owner insisted that we had misrepresented ourselves and the size of our group and demanded additional payment. He was so insistent and rather accusing; we finally agreed to pay more to stop the unpleasant phone calls from him. He insisted on us bringing a check to him in Carbondale. Nothing was easy in our dealings with him. We ended up feeling stressed and unwelcome.
As for the house, one major problem for us was the strong smell of sulphur in the water. Washing in the shower, we would have to try not to breathe in the smell of rotten eggs. The Internet didn't really work--we learned that this can often be the case in remote mountain locations. All in all, our vacation here was the worst ever in a VRBO property.
I am sure the owner will reply to this review with accusations of his own. He always seemed to need to have the last word and to make sure that we knew that he was right and we were wrong. It was the strangest kind of "hospitality" we have ever experienced.
This house is quite spectacular and even though I grew up in Colorado, I've never experienced such awesome 180 degree views. Anthony is quite helpful and always available for questions or planning. Thank you, Anthony, for being such a solicitous host. Your care in the construction is very obvious. We loved the wonderful barbecue down the hill and found the Marble Community Church to be a jewel of an experience, as well. Yes, take your groceries with you but we would also advise more than individual bottled water. We needed gallon jugs of spring water for coffee, tea, and drinking. The water in the area is obviously very 'mineralized' in flavor but good for drinking if you don't mind that.
It is difficult to describe this very special home. The dusty winding road to the cabin was a little daunting but more than rewarded by this very special place perched on the mountain overlooking Marble. The home is perfectly oriented to capture the rising and setting sun. Perfect views of the peaks, lake, and waterfall. It is so quiet that peace is guaranteed. There is a great BBQ restaurant in Marble and two more in Redstone that are all worth the visit. The only problem is that you won't want to leave the deck as the views will mesmerize. Thank you Anthony for this wonderful experience.
This was our first actual trip to be able to stay in Colorado and did not want to experience this beautiful state from a regular hotel room, so we chose to stay in the mountains - we were not disappointed in that choice. Words can't describe how absolutely beautiful and relaxing this cabin is! Not knowing what to expect exactly, my husband and I were so pleasantly surprised with our overall stay. Anthony had us bring sundries from town as all the basics were provided. The views were commanding, the cabin was gorgeous and very comfortable. We would definitely recommend staying here.
Our family rented the "Cabin In The Sky" including the one bedroom studio for our wedding this past June. WOW! Every room in the cabin offers aw inspiring panoramic views of Beaver Lake and The Ragged Wilderness. This is a perfect place to escape the modern world and enjoy nature at it's finest. We enjoyed watching deer graze around the cabin surrounded by alpenglow in the early mornings and evenings. The cabin is well decorated with interesting cultural artifacts from all over the world, and it's unique architecture allows privacy between the studio, downstairs living room, and upstairs living space (Where the master bedroom is located). It's perfect for couples or multiple families traveling together who want privacy, yet want to all be under the same roof. This is an off the grid cabin and location. For travelers who have not visited Marble, it is far from the glitz of nearby Aspen. Marble is a rustic mountain community, where adventure opportunities are amble and cell phone service and skinny, light foam, one pump lattes are non-existent. If you are looking for a unique, incredibly beautiful, and peaceful place to stay in Colorado, I would highly recommend renting "The Cabin In The Sky". The owner is also great to work with. He offered a wealth of information on the surrounding area and suggestions of things to do.
Fly Fishing, Marble Peak Back Country Skiing, Marble Quarry Tours, Lead King Basin 4WD Tour, Back Packing, frisbee golf, ATV riding, horseback riding, visit the famous and photogenic Crystal Mill, soak in Penny Hot springs, intertube river or snow hills, sled on road visit the marble museum for local history. ALSO, Peoania and Hotchkiss are an easy and beautiful 50 miles where you can enjoy the states breadbasket fruits (Peaches, nectarines, plums, berries, apples, cherries, etc). Also, the veggies are gorgeous! There are some great restaurants/bakeries like the 'flying fork' and some local wineries to sample the local flavor.
