The house was built in the mid 19th century with renovations in 2001 and 2009. We are located in the middle of the Lewes historic district with walkable charm for the entire family. Stroll to King's Ice Cream and The Chocolate Factory with the kids. Shop on Second Street. Short walk to Lewes-Rehoboth Canal and to the town beach, and a short bike ride to Cape Henlopen State Park for the incredible beaches there.
The house is perfect for family living, and has been enjoyed by many for family reunions and get togethers. The house is very private and is furnished with antiques and casual furniture, oriental rugs and paintings by local artists--you will feel at home, not in a rental.
The house lives like a modern house, with an open kitchen/breakfast nook/TV area, and separate formal dining and living room areas--great for privacy and togetherness at the same time. Everyone's favorite part of the house is the back porch--a Key West style screen porch with round dining table plus casual reading and relaxing area with seating for four. The backyard is completely private garden with a secluded hot tub in the corner--a must see.
There are two master suites--one on the ground floor level (with grab bars in bathroom) and one on the second floor. There are two additional bedrooms on the second floor--one with a queen bed and one with twin beds. One the top floor is a special kids retreat with a double bed, a twin bunk, and a smaller kid's bunk bed (decorated by our children for kids to escape from their parents).
House has bikes and a kayak for guests to use, and is fully-equipped for a great short or long holiday.

We bought this house in Lewes after years of renting in the Rehoboth area. We spent a week in Lewes and were captivated by its charm, and by the amazing beaches at Cape Henlopen. Our daughters love to bring their friends down for visits, and the house has been a very popular spot for our family reunions and get-togethers. We still marvel at the recreational opportunities here (cycling, running, tennis, golf, kayaking, and surfing) and at the beautiful small town full of great restaurants we can walk to.
Richard Smith purchased this house in 2005
We fell in love with the quiet charm of Lewes. Everything is so close, and you never even need to get in your car. Our kids walk all around town by themselves to shops, to market, and to get food and King's Ice Cream. The beaches are like Cape Cod with wildlife and beautiful dunes, not like most of the mid-Atlantic.
Very quiet oasis at the beach. Private rear yard feels like Key West. House is furnished like a house, not a rental, with antiques, oriental rugs and some paintings by local artists. You can walk to the market, the drug store, and the Chocolate Factory or King's Ice Cream plus a wide selection of restaurants. Feels like Nantucket or Cape Cod here.
My family had a fabulous last minute Labor Day weekend in the charming house. The owner, Richard, made it even more special by letting us bring our dog who could be left at home because he had a broken leg! The pictures and description are acurate. The location is perfect if you want to park and walk around town. You do have to drive to the beach but although is was a crowded weekend, we quickly found parking at both the beach at the bay and in the state park.
The house has everything you need and is very comfortable. We loved the screen-in porch! We look forward to renting it in the future! Thanks again for allowing us to enjoy your terrific house!
Beginning with the communication with the owner, this rental was amazing. A truly lovely home, complete with everything, clean, well-maintained, and space for everyone to spread out and relax. The beds and the bedding are top, as was the decor, and amenities. For us, it was also very nice to have a first floor bedroom for a family member, have the dogs with us, and the hot tub was a huge hit, as it was quite chilly.
A very nice location, and walking distance to the lovely town with restaurants, shopping, and atmosphere. We would definitely repeat and recommend this!
Arrived in Lewes a week before my son's wedding and walked into the perfect house!Very homey and well equipped. Has everything you need including puzzles and books so pack light! The hot tub and back porch was put into daily use! Very cozy! We walked to Second St which was a delight! Great shops and restaurants! Also make sure you take the ferry to Cape May-wonderful day trip! And the weather was fantastic! Wonderful week and wonderful wedding! Thank you!
This house in downtown Lewes, DE was a perfect place to stay while attending the International Beachcombing Conference in October 2012. Six women shared this house, and thoroughly enjoyed all the amenities, as well as the proximity to the UD College of Marine Studies. The only downside was that we were so busy with the conference that we didn't get to take advantage of the kayaks, the bikes, and other opportunities offered by this special location!
We hope to be back in the near future! Might even bring my husband next time!
We enjoyed our stay and the home could not have been more comfortable. Richard was sure to let us know their home was our home. Barbara was there to make sure we aware of all the home had to offer. Be sure to take a look through Richard’s Guide to the home and you’ll find all the details you need to know.
My mom was able to enjoy the downstairs master bedroom and bath avoiding the steps to the second floor. My wife and I used the front upstairs bedroom and the large bath with the two showers. Plenty of room for two to get ready for a night out, or just starting your day.
The home is not furnished or outfitted for rental; it is your own home away from home. From the chairs inside and out, to the sofas, beds and the rest of the furniture, this is a residence you will enjoy. We were sorry we did not make the time to barbeque or use the outside hot tub, but we did take advantage of the back screened in porch for a lovely dinner outside.
The home would normally be within walking distance to town, however to let my mother enjoy her walk in town we chose to drive the few blocks. We have normally stayed at the Hotel Rodney; however, we were looking for a taste of the residential areas as we are looking to purchase a property in the area. Depending on the time we have for our next visits to Lewes, if the home were available we would make the effort to stay again and take advantage of Richard’s family hospitality of offering their home.
If you are looking to enjoy the town of Lewes and the surrounding area, this home makes a great focal point that your family would take pleasure in.
We stayed at this beautiful house early in March for my husband's birthday, and really enjoyed it. It was such a lovely place and well situated and we had a lovely time there. But, ever since then we have been emailing and calling the owner to get our deposit back. The owner is difficult to get in contact with, which caused us some problem when we were staying at the place, and has also been an issue in getting our money back. Twice in the past month and a half he has returned an email stating he sent us the check and that the property had been left in good condition ( so no reason to withhold the deposit). And twice now the check has not arrived ( we gave him our address via email several times). This is absolutely unacceptable, especially since it has caused my husband to get involved and put a damper on what was supposed to be a relaxing birthday weekend away. This place would have been excellent except for the problem with the deposit.
