Our family and friends spend many days enjoying the property. There's something for everyone here! Days are spent boating, fishing, swimming, gathering for outdoor meals with occasional shopping or trips to the casino. Our days always end by the campfire with lots of fun.
The Owner purchased this house in 2003
The cabin is well maintained (on the historic list), the porch is the best feature with multiple windows to let in a nice breeze and protect you from the crazy mosquitos. Lots of fun games were provided along with new HD televisions and a DVD player. The contact, Carrie, was always helpful and a easy to work with. The cabin offered plenty of sleeping space and amenities (2 fridges, updated appliances, washer/dryer, empty lot next door, huge driveway for parking, and propane grill). This place provided everything needed excluding Wi-Fi internet but you can just use your 3G or 4G. The cabin is perfectly located across the street from a golf course, literally next door to a private boat launch (charged 10 dollars a day but the owner Shelby was very nice and rented us a slip for the same price so we didn’t have to bother taking the boat in and out), and only a couple miles from both the casino and other various bars/restaurants/liquor stores/grocery stores/gas stations. Have absolutely zero complaints with this place and would recommend it to everyone. Just be advised that there is only one bathroom if that is an issue with anyone, it was not for us, and that the lake is huge and can be windy and dangerous so boat use is unpredictable. Overall 5 stars!!!!!
I realize that everyone looks for something different in a vacation property, but my group instantly fell in love with this cabin last year and hope to return in the future. So, looking at the list of things VRBO says to discuss (accuracy of listing, etc.), all I can say is that the cabin met or exceeded every expectation I had. What I have to say goes far beyond those minimal expectations.
Let me also say that I've stayed at a cabin on Mille Lacs every year since 1987. Prior to this trip, I'd stayed at five other places, all nice in their own way, but this was the BEST cabin I've stayed at, at it isn't even close.
I can probably make this simple by making a list of the things that were so great (in no particular order):
1. The cabin is large and roomy. Let me repeat that: the cabin is huge.
2. Unlike many cabin rentals, it is clean and well cared for.
3. There is a second cabin! Sometimes, somebody wants some space. Well, if you want, you can stay next door!
4. It is private. The land is spacious enough that the neighbors aren't right on top of you at all.
5. It has tremendous views of the lake.
6. It is not right on the highway so its quiet.
7. It has lots of games and diversions for rainy days.
8. The cabin itself has a great history, which can be read about in some articles you can find in the cabin.
9. It has an amazing porch. I cannot understate this. Best. Porch. Ever.
10. The owner is very nice and easy to deal with.
Now, I'm going to write some criticism too, not because I was in any way unhappy, but because if you have certain expectations, you might not be as excited as I was. Mostly, I'm just doing this so you know this isn't fake.
1. It is definitely a cabin, not "luxury" accommodation. Don't expect everybody to have a king sized sleigh bed with a down comforter and room service (Although Diamond Dave's Pizzeria in Garrison delivers and is quite good). That said, it is decidedly comfortable. Every person in my large party said the beds were comfortable and they all slept well.
2. If you are a culinary expert, you may want to bring your favorite cooking implements. The kitchen is very functional, but the utensils are pretty basic. If you are not Julia Child, you'll do just fine.
That's it. All-in-all this is a wonderful place for a vacation. It is great for families, perfect for a few families with kids. I cannot say enough nice things about it. It is, the best.
We stayed at this property in July of 2013. Part of the charm of this cabin is its history. Don't expect brand-shiny new but it is nicely updated and very comfortable. Although the weather wasn't great, we appreciated the porch and views of the bunkhouse allowing the outdoors in. There is also a lot to do in the surrounding area so a day of rain is not lost.
Our party was 10 people and there was ample room for all. The upstairs bedrooms are very roomy and there were even a few toys for the kids. We appreciated being able to use the bunkhouse and having a second bathroom. Bring washcloths and beach towels, there are plenty of bath towels.
We ate almost every meal at the cabin and the kitchen had almost everything we needed. Bring your blender, dish towels, dish cloths, paper towels and good knives if required. There is ample refrigerator and freezer space. The water was not good to drink but that's expected at a lake home. There is also a washer/dryer downstairs if needed.
Outdoor space was great. A large lot for playing games and running around. Swimming is possible but it was difficult for our smaller children. It is a rocky area which is slippery. Bring water shoes. There were a lot of rafts and floaties and we appreciated the extra child-sized life jackets.
We were able to communicate with the manager throughout the weekend. She was great to work with. In all a great place for our family of 10. Space to spread out and a beautiful location.
A perfect setting for that first cup of morning coffee, whether taking in the view from the comfort of the porch or relaxing dockside with the splash and rhythm of the waves meeting the shore, and the fresh air filling your lungs. The sun rises over the lake, bathing the shoreline in sunlight throughout the morning hours. Mature trees provide filtered sunlight to the stone porch. I couldn't ask for a better start to the day.
The cabin is distinct in its architecture---built in 1922 entirely using stone from the lake (the owner has a clipping on the history)---it is both cozy, yet roomy enough to accommodate a sizable group. The porch spans the length of the house, with enough space for some to relax and enjoy conversation together, while others can play games at the table. The living room, dining, and kitchen areas are also roomy and comfortable.
The cabin rests on a large lot, providing plenty of open space to the sides for outdoor games if you bring them---volleyball, badminton, ladder ball, bocci ball, etc., while providing a buffer from any neighbors. The cabin itself sits close to and above the water, offering a great view and intimate feel of the lake.
Overall we enjoyed our stay immensely. Clean, spacious, and comfortable, in a great setting.
We stayed here for 3 nights in July and had a great vacation here. The house was perfect for us. There were 11 of us and there was plenty of room. My family came up from Ohio to visit and we brought them up here and they loved the lake and being "up north". We didn't have any problems with the house, or the rental experience. We cooked all our meals at the house and had all the things we needed to cook them. With 11 people we found that the 2nd bathroom came in handy when we all were trying to get ready at the same time to go to the casino, after a day out on the lake. The house is rock and is beautiful! It has great central air and is very cool inside when it is very hot outside ! All in all we had a great time at this home, and would consider returning.
We had a wonderful week on Mille Lacs Lake celebrating our son's 30th birthday. There were 9 of us including a 3 year old and the house/property was perfect for our needs. It is an older house with lots of charm. Three fun bedrooms upstairs with a queen bed and either 1 or 2 twins in each room and a king bed in the main floor bedroom. There are TV's in 2 of the 4 bedrooms. The guesthouse is large with another queen bedroom, kitchen, bath and living area, however it was extremely hot in there with only a window air conditioner in the bathroom so we did not use that area but it was not needed. We opened the windows in the large porch and got the breeze from the lake - great area! There is a nice dock wih a sitting area altho you have to be careful of the cement steps going down as they are starting to give way.
There are lots of dishes, utensils, a toaster, crock pots, gas stove, dishwater etc. but no mixer of any kind. There is a wonderful gas grill outside. We only ate out once all week. I do have to warn you that the refrigerator does not keep anything cold altho the freezer seemed to keep most of our stuff adequately frozen. There is another frig in the guest house. Also, the well water is TERRIBLE so bring your own for drinking. There is a washer/dryer in the basement but due to the bad water I didn't do any of our laundry. The unit is stocked with lots of bedding, towels, paper towels, etc. but no washclothes.
The house is in a quiet residential area - we did not see or hear another person the whole week. The boat launch right next door was really handy since you are not allowed to leave your boat tied to the dock overnight. They charged a weekly rate to launch our boat. There is a nice large parking area in front of the 3 stall garage (locked). The house sits on 200' of lake frontage. We had a lot of fun playing croquet, bean bag toss, etc on the large grassy lot (altho the grass needed mowing). There were lots of lawn chairs, floating inner tubes, board games and sattelite TV/DVD player. There is no WIFI. Firewood would have been nice but we were able to buy some in Garrison.
The owner is somewhat hard to contact but will eventually call/email you back. I thought the high deposit in addition to the weekly rate was a little steep but received the deposit back within 6 days after arriving home. No credit cards accepted.
This was our 1st time to the area - we will definitely be back and probably stay here. Loved it!
