Fully furnished cottage in the woods with backyard opening to pine trees and four acre pond. Cottage has wood floors, window air conditioners and homey furnishings. Perfect for a family retreat or a romantic getaway. Located on our 300 acre working ranch, Pine Grove Cottage is tucked away on its own corner of the property with private drive and gated entrance. A sun room runs the length of the house in the back and looks out on the pine grove and lake beyond. An open family room/dining/kitchen is perfect for family gatherings. Guests are free to roam the ranch property which includes several small lakes (four to seven acres in size) and large expanses of wooded acreage where wildlife and birds abound. Fishing on the lakes is available. Lakes are stocked with bass, catfish and brim.
Canoes and boats are provided for those who want to go out on the lakes to fish or just relax. Visitors can also receive ranch tours including a chance to see prize winning Shorthorn cattle and the owner's herd of miniature horses. Located within 15 minutes of Pittsburg, Gilmer, and Winnsboro, guests can experience life in the country but enjoy the amenities of a town. In the summer, fresh peaches, blackberries and blueberries are sold at nearby orchards. Golfing, a winery and a variety of restaurants are within 15 minutes of the ranch. For those who enjoy antiques, there are many shops within 15-30 minutes of the ranch.
Jim and Paula Archer own and operate Lone Star Cattle Company, a working 250 acre ranch in Northeast Texas. Jim is a recently retired Professor of Chemistry. Paula retired last year after 30+ years as a software sales leader for a major corporation. They moved to the ranch over 13 years ago. Jim continues to be active in Rotary International and recently served as District Governor for Rotary International. He is also Chair of the local ambulance board. Paula raises Shorthorn show calves and breeding stock. She is on the Board of Directors for the Texas Shorthorn Association and will serve as Vice President of that organization for 2013-14. Both enjoy sharing the relaxation and enjoyment of the ranch through the vacation rental program.

We love the beauty of the area and the wonderful community of small town friends and neighbors. We moved to East Texas more than 20 years ago. After living in 'town' (Pittsburg TX) for 10 years we bought the ranch and fixed up Pine Grove Cottage for our weekend getaway. We loved staying there so much we sold our home in the city and moved to Pine Grove Cottage while we began plans for a new home on another corner of the property. During this time we needed more room for family and friends so we added Spring House on still another corner of the ranch. In 2005 our home was completed and we moved out of Pine Grove Cottage. We decided to offer both Pine Grove and Spring House on VRBO at that time so others could share in the beauty and fun of the ranch. We were so pleased with the wonderful guests that visited, we have added a third VRBO guest apartment and a Bed & Breakfast to allow larger groups to stay. In 2011 Paula's sister and brother-in-law moved to the area and purchased Spring House as their private residence. Our positive experience with vacation rentals led us to replace the property with a brand new one, Lakeside Cottage, which we built and opened for business in 2012. We often host extended families looking for a retreat, wedding parties and multiple families who want to come together to visit. Now we can accommodate all. Our return rate is very high and many of our guests have come to view the ranch as their own special place in the country...without all the hard work!
I rented the Tree House for my daughter and her husband, he is working a long term job in Longview; their home is in Dallas. So this was sorta mid way for a week end together.
They enjoyed the quiet, peaceful, and private time. Told me the Tree House was beautiful and very nicely decorated, very clean and they felt so welcome.
The views were awesome, too cold for boating/fishing/hiking. But, will definitely be returning.
The owners, Paula, was so sweet to ensure our children had a much needed weekend together, making sure they had information of surrounding towns for dinner, adding eggs and those famous biscuits for them.
Look forward to a spring or summer visit.

This was our third visit, but our first time to stay in Pine Grove Cottage. As native East Texans (Gilmer & Tyler) it doesn't get any better than this! We try to get home every chance we get, and though it's a long haul from Atlanta, GA, it's worth the effort. The fishing is great and right out the back door, but what a treat for the grandkids to pet the goats, feed the chickens and wander freely throughout the ranch enjoying the beauty of God's wonderful creation. The cottage is livable, functional and quiet. Indeed, Jim & Paula have carved out a little place that's a bit of heaven on earth. A 5-star Wow! ! !
My husband, our 9 year old Grandson and I stayed at Pine Grove Cottage for 3 nights and loved every minute of it. It is a perfect getaway and so peaceful! Jim and Paula are so warm and hospitable (be sure to take the ranch tour, it is so interesting!) - and the nature was beautiful. The cabin has everything you need and it is so nicely decorated and comfortable, we slept beautifully after fun-filled days on the lake, fishing, hiking and roasting marshmallows. If you want some quality time with your family and a wonderful time, Pine Grove Cottage is the place!
Cottage was somewhat excluded with very mature trees and woods surrounding the property. Sunroom on the back was very peaceful and overlooking the lake. Saw racoons, squirrels, & rabbits which made the trip more pleasant. The overall stay was very relaxing particularly when dining in the sunroom or just sitting and viewing. Host was very accommodating and was a great resource of info regarding the area and other surrounding activities. Came on recommendation of friends who had stayed several times and would definetly go back.
The experience was excellent. We fished and relaxed. We saw wildlife like beaver, raccoons, rabbits, and lots of birds. The local community was large enough to provide a evening getaway with a variety of dining and shopping. The cottage we stayed in was very clean and had everything we needed to be self sufficient. The farm had cute goats and cows when we traveled between lakes for fishing.
Always peaceful. Always relaxing. I just can't get enough of this place. Brought my kids for the first time...I usually only reserve this for adult get away time. But I think they love it just as much as I do.
Thank you again for everything.
