We have three children and fell in love with the beach in Kailua. It is a fabulous beach, excellent for children and ideal for all water sports. Kailua is a great town just 20 minutes from Honolulu, yet a world away. It is quiet, with unique shops and restaurants.
Theresa Andreou purchased this house in 2009
We have a true beach front home on the best part of the beach, in a quiet location. Also the private swimming pool is an additional great feature of our home.
We stayed in this house for two weeks. Walked out the back door to the beach for morning sunrise, stretching, coffee, boogie boarding. Rinsed off and jumped in the pool. Then ate some breakfast and drove off to other activities around the island. Back for dinner and more water fun. I had a different group of family and friends for the two weeks and everybody loved the house. Location is great for beach and town. This is an open air house which fit us great. All of us want to go back and hope to soon.
What an amazing house. Love the layout - kitchen, living room and entertainment area are very spacious. Even a ping pong table! All of the bedrooms are laid out so that if those in the group wanted to stay up and have fun, sleeping was not a problem. The kitchen and adjacent storage make cooking very easy. We actually prepared and feed a large group for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. And all of us ate the table! The neighborhood is very quiet, there is no traffic to contend with, and shopping of all kinds are only minutes away. Having a pool all to yourself and not communal, along with the most beautiful beach made our water activities and evening walks something we looked forward to every day. One of the most important aspects of this trip was that the house itself is very safe. One level for my husband who has trouble with steps, lots of doors with locks to keep the little ones "contained", and simple floor plan that moving around very easy. Always lots of hot water and the usual items necessary (like garbage bags and toilet paper) in abundant supply. The on site manager was the nicest person, always quick to answer. Hopefully we didn't bother them too much. It is clean, perfectly situated, and very user friendly. Do not expect the perfect 'house and garden house'; it is a beach house that we loved and would recommend for those groups who want the best paradise has to offer. Thank you for sharing and allowing us to stay.
In the middle of September myself and a few girls from Vancouver planned a spontaneous get away trip to Honolulu and by chance rented this beach house in Kailua. To put it simply we had the best holiday any of us could have asked for.
The house itself was very traditional and cozy. The view was amazing (how can it not if you're right on the beach!) and the home was well stocked with all the modern amenities a gal could ask for. Large flat screen TV's, fully loaded kitchen, kayaks, paddle boards, boogie boards, pool toys the list goes on and on. The kitchen was beautiful and perfect for entertaining with a large dinning area and spacious living room. We were a group of 6 and because the house was so cozy we ended up having a blast staying in most nights and doing lots of our own cooking which we did not originally plan for. I remember the beds also being super comfortable (very important to me while traveling) and I slept like a baby the entire trip. I really enjoyed how the house also came with enough bikes for us to easily travel into town and have access to places like Whole Foods, Starbuck and lots of other cute little shops.
I would without hesitation recommend this get away destination to anyone who is looking for the perfect spot in Kailua. I've traveled a lot in my day so I've seen it all and this spot is a 10/10 in my books! Aloha!!
I just returned from my second trip to this Kailua beachhouse and the trip once again exceeded my expectations. We rented the home for a girlfriend's getaway, and six of us had a fantastic trip. We only left one night to go into Waikiki as the house is outfitted so well it was the perfect getaway for a relaxing trip. We went to the new Whole Foods in Kailua (a five minute drive or 20 minute walk) and picked up lots of yummy appies, salad fixings, seafood and steaks. The house has everything - lots of lawn chairs, beach chairs, boogie boards so we really enjoyed the yard and beach. We walked every day to the cute store for coffee in the morning which is about a 30 minute walk on the most gorgeous beach. The pool was a special treat to relax with a floatie and we used the bbq a lot.
I travel a lot for work and stay in 4 or 5 star hotels and what I appreciate about the beach house is the casual flow and the space. The inside dining table is a large gorgeous piece of long wood and we had lots of room to share our yummy dinners. We often ate lunch outdoors on one of the patios. There are plenty of comfy chairs and a large sofa by the flat screen tv (we didn't turn it on but if you brought kids it would be a great distraction for some downtime or while you are preparing dinner).
I read some of the other reviews and while the driveway is narrow, it's not a problem at all, we easily pulled in and out and walked up to the Bike Shop and rented bikes for the day (which was very fun and there is a great bike lane which goes to Lanikai).
I also recommend this property for families with Grandparents as there are two master bedrooms both complete with bathrooms so you can easily spread out and still have some privacy.
Thank you again!!! I can't wait to book next year's getaway!!
Our family of 8 (6 adults and 2 children) stayed here 9-7-2014 through 9-19-2014 and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
The house is located on a quiet and gorgeous portion of Kailua Beach. It was so wonderful to spend our days wandering between the large pool and the beach. The house was stocked with many pool and beach toys as well as boogey boards and two kayaks. During our stay, we enjoyed these extras and the kids especially had a ball playing in the pool and by the sea.
We thought the house was good and suited our needs perfectly. Was it ready for Architecture Digest? No, but we weren't looking for a palace and at $600 p/night with a large pool AND located right on the beach WITH direct beach access (not always available with these beach front homes), this home was a real bargain.
The home was comfortable with lots of room for the 8 of us to spread out. The bathrooms have been updated and the kitchen was well stocked with dishes and cooking equipment of much better quality than you usually find in a vacation rental. When contacted, the caretakers and owners were quick to respond and very good to work with.
We had the same issue with the refrigerator not working but immediately after we contacted the caretaker, Mark, he was over to fix the refrigerator. It did continue to leak water which we were easily able to control and was no real bother to us. The same day I emailed the owners about the continued leak, we were told a repairperson was on the way. Our stay ended before the fridge was repaired so, I don't know what the actual outcome was but I can say the owners and caretakers were very responsive and I have no doubt the problem was fixed. These people clearly care about their property and their guests. As I mentioned, once communicated, our issues were quickly addressed.
A previous reviewer mentions issues with the driveway and I can say it was no bother for us. We rented a large SUV and had no problems backing in or out of the driveway. Additionally, we had no issues with any unauthorized person(s) on the property and at no time did we feel unsafe. The house is located in a very nice area with many of the surrounding homes being very high-end.
For the price, location and amenities, this is a superb place for a family vacation - I'd stay here again in a flash.
We stayed here for eight nights. The beach was beautiful, the back yard was great, and the pool was also nice. But the house was a disappointment.
This beach house is one large space, with a kitchen area and areas for living, eating, TV and ping pong. A large, unroofed atrium, permanently open to the elements and not walled off from the rest of the house, is adjacent to one end of the space. The bedrooms are in a line, two of them off a concrete walkway that runs alongside the atrium. Two have full baths; a third has a shower only; a fourth has no bath. There is a sink and toilet in a separate bathroom off the walkway.
The kitchen and bathrooms have been upgraded, but the house needs a facelift and better upkeep. Save for the kitchen and bathrooms, which are tiled, floors throughout (including the bedrooms) are uncarpeted, brown concrete (with a couple of small throw rugs), contributing to a generally dark and somewhat unwelcoming ambience. Except for the kitchen, lighting is limited, making things a bit gloomy, especially at night. The bedrooms are spare and do not live up to their pictures. The atrium needs a good cleanout, and the sofa cushions need a deep cleaning (some look beyond cleanable).
Appliances and plumbing worked (refrigerator freezer leaked). Washer and dryer are outside; the outside of the washer was very dirty, the outside of the dryer was very rusty.
A beach house does present some special problems, but little seems to have been done here to mitigate them.
The caretakers were off-island during our visit. I missed one call-back from them; several other calls went unanswered. A car parked in front of the garage made it impossible to turn our cars around; we had to back down a 90 foot driveway (walls on both sides). I wouldn't try this at night.
Two neighborhood boys (with their dog) appeared in the pool on the last four days (we left on the fifth), claiming they had the owner's permission and becoming increasingly obstinate about leaving. On one day they had a 6-7 yr. old girl with them. It was unnerving, and, together with the open-air atrium, lent a feeling of insecurity to the place.
Although the owner was responsive to two e-mails, it took 33 days to get our damage deposit check back.
We have been to Hawaii many times and this is not the usual "please leave your shoes outside" experience. If your only interest is the beach, you might be okay here, but we would not stay here again.
