born and raised in Southwest Harbor I wanted a place for my husband and I to 'come home' when retirement comes. Also a place to enjoy with family until then.
Bill and Kathy Thurnau purchased this cottage in 1986
this property is 2 doors down from the homestead where my father was born and 'kitty corner' across the street to he apartment that I lived in as a very young girl - this property was for sale in 1986 and it was a place we could make our own......which we have with the complete remodel in 2011. Enjoy the before and after album in the bookcase..........
We enjoy the view of the quiet harbor with our morning coffee.....we love hearing from the notes in the cottage log that others like it too especially our 'Cottage Family' that come back year after year......a big plus is we are away from the hustle and bustle - we can visit that when a need arises......
It has been several years since our last review and we have to say that this cozy, comfortable, well-furnished cottage in the heart of Maine vacationland has only improved tremendously since we first started visiting 8 or 9 years ago.
A complete renovation and expansion three years ago almost doubled the space in the cottage and the addition of a screened-in porch has made it delightful to sit outside in the late afternoon or evening without bugs.
We so much look forward to our yearly trips to Maine and our two weeks at the HeadoftheHarbor cottage. Knowing that the cottage and the accommodations will be clean and so well stocked, makes just one less worry for us at vacation time. We can truly say that this cottage is about as close to having a summer home as we will probably ever have.
We had a wonderful week at the cottage. It is clean, fresh, and very comfortable. The front porch was a treat as was being in the beautiful Acadia area. The cottage is near a lovely small town and in a quiet part of the island but is close to all of the Acadia attractions. It was a place where we could enjoy being relaxed and comfortable yet away from home.
All was well at head of harbor cottage, clean and comfortable. Well equipt.
My husband and I with another couple stayed in the Head of Harbor cottage for a week in July and had a wonderful time. The cottage is vert clean and comfortabel. It has everything we needed. It is closed to Southwest Harbor, and not too far from Bar Harbor. We have already thinking of going back for next year.
Head of the Harbor Cottage is a wonderful, quaint cottage in a superb location. It is just minutes away from Bass Harbor Head Light, Seawall and Southwest Harbor and only 20 minutes to Bar Harbor and Northeast Harbor.
It is a quiet, peaceful location and the cottage had everything we needed. We stayed with two young kids and they loved the little cottage. They also had fun playing in the yard. The cottage is a great fit for a family of 4.
It is impossible to write how much my wife and I have enjoyed staying that the Headof Harbor Cottage. We have been rented the cottage for a week in July for three years and are looking forward to returning a fourth year this fall. It is a very clean, comfortable and well furnished cottage located in one of the most picturesque locations on the East Coast. Bass Harbor is a true Downeast fishing town that in itself is worth the trip to visit. But there is also much to see and explore in nearby Southwest Harbor, Bar Harbor and of course Acadia National Park, all within a very short driving distance. And don't forget a ferry ride over to Swans Island for a trip back 75 years in time to the way life should be.
The kitchen is well suited for cooking any and all meals if you care to do that while on vaction. There are several very nice restaunts in Bass Harbor and Southwest Harbor if you prefer to eat out. The bedrooms are small but very nice. On a rainy day, you will enjoy the cable TV and the selection of books at the cottage or the very pleasant public library in Southwest Harbor.
I would recommend the cottage to couples or a family with no more than two young children. It is very comfortable, homey, and well furnished/maintained but a bit more suited for a couple wanting a romantic get-away in a private cottage rather than a family with energetic kids.
Please don't overlook HeadofHarbor as you search for a place to stay in Downeast Maine. If you are looking for a cozy, clean, comfortable cottage as a quiet place to stay and rest or as a "headquarters" for exploring all of the fun, beauty and adventure of coastal Maine, this might be the perfect place for you...!
