Area: For those first timers that want full experience and better knowledge of this large water fishing, guide service is recommended. Book your guide early. However, Chief Lake and other nearby waters are well suited for all, including fishing, boating, and jet skies. Muskie, walleye, crape and northern are there for the challenge. The big Chip is known for its Muskie, so you may want to enter the $10,000 big Muskie contest. It's a 10 min. drive to many local lodges with pontoon and boat rentals, gas, and bait. Most also serve excellent food and fish stories. 15 minute drive to the casino, and 20 min. to Hayward with all its great shops and attractions. Make sure you see the world record musky, fishing museum, and huge candy shop. There are hundreds of miles of well groomed trails for snowmobilers, dirt bikes, and 4 wheelers with very little traffic and beautiful scenery. Fall colors are spectacular.
Special trails for hikers, bikers, and cross country skiers as well. Or time your trip for the big logging contest. See competition chopping, log rolling, and pole climbing at its best from a water side restaurant. See the biggest musky ever caught. You may wish to pack a lunch, or cook and camp out on one of the public islands on the flowage. The DNR has several set up for the experience. Unlike many over populated lakes, the Big Chip has vast areas of unspoiled woods and water. Golfers, bring your clubs. Come and enjoy the north woods and all it offers the family.
