Nestled comfortably within the graceful curve of Puako Bay, this home site is protected by a whale’s tail-shaped lava outcropping. A light and airy house with cathedral ceilings, it offers peaceful comfort, spectacular views and the gentle sounds of water lapping on the shore. Set Located well back from Puako Beach Drive, next door to the tiny historic Hokuloa Church, the Whale’s Tail is a surprise delight: nothing from the street side prepares you for the landscaped yard, large and sunny patio, covered lanai…right next to the sandy beach and quiet waters of the Pacific Ocean. Configured to sleep eight in three bedrooms with three baths, the Whale’s Tail offers views of the bay, Maui and its volcanic mountain Haleakala, and our own Kohala Mountains
Combine the sandy beach next to your back yard with the thoughtfully placed windows that give you excellent views from nearly every spot in the house—upstairs and down—and you’ll love the Whale’s Tail for you Hawaii vacation. Not only is the entire ocean-facing wall built with windows, but also an additional row of large clerestory windows above them ensures that the second- floor loft space and bedrooms have ocean and sunset views. The décor throughout the home echoes the beach, ocean, sky and mountain environment: clean white walls, sandy shades of upholstery, blue-gray cabinetry and tiles of sand and sea colors. Original, local artwork—even in the bathrooms—adds to your sense of place in this very special corner of paradise. GE and TAX number W 00480306-01

The house was very clean upon our arrival. Our flight arrived quite late in the evening so a special thanks for having the lights on, the AC started. The fresh fruit and good Kona coffee were appreciated. The best things about the house were the view, beach, and nice layout inside; good kitchen/great room set up.
Nice, relatively secluded, location. Good swimming, snorkeling and views of the Humpback migration to Alaska.
Well equipped house and kitchen, and nicely furnished. Easy access to Puako General Store.
The road noise, especially early in the morning, is truly annoying.
Between the waves next door at Hapuna Beach and the wonderful snorkeling right out back, Whale's Tail was everything we had hoped for. We needed a vacation that was relaxing and we don't like to eat out. The kitchen was amazing. It was so nice to have a beautiful home to enjoy along with the recreational activities so close.
This was a perfect house in a gorgeous water front location for a family of eight. A week of fun... sunset views each evening, snorkeling daily. The kitchen is very well equipped and conducive to excellent meal preparation. Good amenities in lovely house.
Whale's Tale was a perfect place for a relaxing get away. Three spacious bedroom suites with attached baths provided privacy. The common areas are beautifully decorated. The sandy beach, a rarity in Puako, makes enjoying the ocean easy.
Sea life was abundant. We even saw a seahorse!
This beachside bungalow was everything we hoped for in a Hawaii vacation rental! Every aspect of this well equipped home is just as described and pictured. We comfortably accommodated eight people for part of our stay. This cottage is in a quiet location just steps from the beach in Puako. If you're looking for something away from the crowds in Kona or the resort areas, this place is perfect! The reef right off the house provided excellent snorkeling opportunities, and sea turtles were all around. The best part for us, though, was the ability to view whales just about any moment one looked out! Definitely bring a pair of binoculars for viewing from the house or lanai, and I highly recommend renting a kayak or two and paddling out into the calm waters of Puako Bay for up close whale encounters!
Whale's Tail was a perfect getaway for our family. While the beach outside the house is small, it is uncrowded, and the water is delightful. We especially enjoyed the small lava rock formations two lots over with their tiny tide pools. It is a short drive to Waialea and Hapuna beaches, which are much larger and more populated.
The house is very accommodating, and we spent our waking time when at the house either in the great room or on the lanai. The kitchen is spacious and well-equipped for home cooking.
The staff at 2 Papayas were terrific, both in arranging for our arrival and in responding to our suggestions as to the few improvements that would make the place perfect (which they did!).
We would gladly return to Whale's Tail the next time we come to the Big Island. We only hope it's sooner rather than later.
