Terminology clarification as you evaluate properties:
1. 'Beach side' does not mean 'Beach front.' 'Beach side' *should* mean that the home is on the beach side of Kalaheo Avenue and there will be no streets to cross to get to the beach. Please ask the property owner if there are any streets to cross to get to the beach.
2. A 'Beach Front' home is actually on the beach.
3. 'Ocean Front' in Kailua means there are only rocks in the front of the property and there is no beach. You will need to drive to get to the beach.
4. 'Ocean View' means that you will have a view of the ocean, but the home is likely up on a hillside.
Questions to ask other property owners:
1. Do I have to cross any streets to get to the beach?
2. Is there a private beach right-of-way for my use? If not, how far is the public right-of-way?
3. Will we be the only renters on the property?

Carolyn Hiatt purchased this house in 1971
This has been our family home since 1971, but I started the vacation rental in 1987 as the children grew up and and moved away to start college. It became a perfect opportunity to keep and maintain my home while meeting interesting people from around the world.
This is a residential neighborhood with wonderful, friendly neighbors. This is why we specialize in families. When my own family arrives the grandchildren run, bike, and play with the neighborhood children.
I submitted a review. After I re-read my review, I realized I wrote it was a three minute walk to the beach. I should have written it was a one minute walk to the beach. If you review it before it is posted can you change that for me? Thanks.
Thanks again for the rental of your amazing house...... wishing we were still there!
My family and I rented the Hiatt Hale for 9 nights in 10/08. We wanted to stay in Kailua because of its beautiful beaches and quaint town. The house was exactly as advertised: clean, spacious, well-stocked. The lanai/pool area was great and we loved spending time out there and grilling out. The tiki torches were a nice touch. There were plenty of towels and dishware. The owner, Carolyn was gracious, welcoming and accommodating. We enjoyed the proximity of downtown Kailua (1 mi) with its shops and restaurants. There was a shopping center less than 1/2 mi away with a grocery and places to eat. There were boogie boards, chairs and an umbrella in the garage to use on the beach. The welcoming fruit basket was lovely. We would definitely return here again and would recommend it to anyone. I wish we didn't have to leave!
Our 3 generation family of 11 loved vacationing at Hiatt Hale. We would highly recommend this property for a family vacation. There was plenty of room, adequate bathroom space, beautiful outdoor spaces, and lovely furnishings throughout. The kids loved swimming in the private pool while parents barbequed family dinners. The beach, a very short walk away, was beautiful featuring amazing sunrises, mild surf, and soft sand. The home was in a perfect location for sightseeing in Oahu. Many places such as Diamond Head and Pearl Harbor were just a short drive away. If we were to plan another vacation to Hawaii we would return to Hiatt Hale! This property is sure to please people of all ages and interests!
Our family of 11 stayed for 10 days in December & January. House had everything as advertised. The furnishings were lovely & the kids enjoyed the pool. They also had a great time at the beach.
Perfect for a large family get together. Lots of open space to visit in. Furniture looked new, and was very comfortable. The outside shower was very popular after a trip to the beach. Owner very accommodating...even had a decorated Christmas tree set up. The pool is not heated and was a little too cold to use during the month of December. Kitchen very well equipped. The beach is very close and is magnificent. I hope to return to Hiatt Hale someday.
Hiatt Hale was absolutely perfect for our family reunion (70th birthday, anniversary, Thanksgiving and more)! The eleven of us ranged from 2 to 72 and every one of us loved the house. We enjoyed the beach (very close), large pool, outdoor shower, lovely outdoor living spaces, beautifully furnished and spacious indoor areas, books for kids and adults, pool and beach toys, crib and high chair, lots of boogie boards, notebook with local recommendations, and the well equipped kitchen. We ended up eating almost all of our meals on the covered patio instead of going out, because it was so convenient and inviting and we have really good cooks in our family. I highly recommend Hiatt Hale.
My extended family of 12 (ranging from 11 to 84) stayed at Hiatt Hale from 10/8/14 to 10/13/14. We had a wonderful time during our stay. We had spent several days in Kauai before arriving on Oahu, and the weather was unseasonably warm on both islands with limited trade winds. Our house on Kauai had not been air-conditioned, so we were thankful to have beautiful accommodations that were also air-conditioned. Carolyn came over the afternoon of our arrival to be sure and answer any questions we had about the house and to provide us with information about the town of Kailua. She also had a book in the house where she had written up pages of information about the house and the town (including information about restaurants, grocery stores, etc.). These accommodations were like staying in a friend's home instead of a rental house. I've rented many houses over the years through VRBO, and I have never rented one that was better equipped to meet the needs of vacationers. From a kitchen stocked with spices and every dish and utensil imaginable to throw blankets, extension cords, water toys, etc., it had everything we needed. For a family of 12, we found the shower facilities to be more than adequate. Although there are only two showers inside the house, there's a private shower right outside the half bath, and several of us used that shower which had great water pressure and plenty of hot water.
The pictures on the website are exactly like the house looks, with beautiful new furniture and a living room surrounded by windows that make you feel like you're outside. We grilled out on the outside lanai, swam in the wonderful pool, and used the private entrance down to the beach numerous times during our stay.
We found the town of Kailua to be an excellent location. We were out of the traffic and hustle of Honolulu but could easily get back there or to the airport or Pear Harbor. It also allowed us to get to the North Shore and the western part of the island more easily than if we were staying on Waikiki.
Overall, I would highly recommend this house.
