My great grandparents traveled from Portugal to the Hawaiin Islands and settled in Maui in the late 1800s. I was born in Maui and reared in Oahu. I went to Farrington High School and graduated when I was 17. I was married the same yr. and also had my first child. By the time I was 21, I had 4 children. I moved to San Diego in 1960, remarried and had my 5th child. I went into Real Estate sales in San Diego and sold RE for 20 yrs. By that time I had several rentals and retired from RE and lived off the income of my rentals. It was hard work
but it paid off in time.
My husband Gary loved fishing and when we went to Kona for a vacation, he fell in love with it.
We wanted to build our home here, so we looked for a lot. We both wanted to
be by the ocean, however, it was slim pickings finding a lot on the ocean or by the ocean. We heard about Kona Paradise from a Realtor who showed us our lot. We were so excited because not only was it ocean front but it also was a swimming beach. It is very rare in Kona to have a beach that you can walk into and swim or snorkel without having to cross over sharp lava rocks.
It is so wonderful to just sit and listen to the waves washing thru the pebbles on the beach. In the winter time when the surf high, it is such a beautiful sight to see the large waves crashing down on the beach. I love watching the whales as they go by to settle in the coves south of us and birth their calfs before going back up north. I also love to see the dophins that come and visit our cove. My huband and I would anchor our boat in the cove and then go fishing. Just a few miles out we would catch a lot of fish that we'd share with our wonderful friends and nieghbors. Kona Paradise is truly paradise.
Just returned from a month-long vacation in this beautiful location. Large comfy beds, spacious & well-stocked kitchen, large lanai. Most days the cove was calm enough for swimming & snorkeling. We even did night snorkels. Some of the best Kona snorkeling is nearby at Honomolino, Hookena and 2-step. Mikie was prompt in responding to our inquiries & requests. BBQ needed parts and was repaired within a couple of days. We cooked nearly all our own meals with fresh island meats, fish & produce. Cell phone service was weak (adequate in one corner of the lanai), so having the house phone available for calls to the mainland was useful. Wifi/internet access was good. Lovely neighborhood. I hope to return!
Yes, this place is getting a little tired. The fabrics are outdated and worn, a couple of ceiling fans don't work, the barbecue is beat up (but still worked), etc. But, the bathrooms are updated and clean and the towels and linens are newer and very clean. Best of all, for us anyway, is the location cannot be beat. It is at the bottom of the hill right on the beach, with the best view and access to water of any place we have stayed or checked out. The beach is a pebble beach. The week we were there (early April), the water was fairly calm and easy swimming. The snorkeling was great and we saw many fish, dolphins, etc. The views and sunsets cannot be beat from this location. We will return.
This is our fourth time staying at Paradise Ocean Hale. This house is a perfect spot for us. Far from the resort crowds, but a great place to start all your activities. It doesn't hurt that it sits at the bottom of the hill and had the best ocean view. Saw many whales from the lanai. So awesome! As usual, Mikie took care of all our needs. Love this place!
This home has it all. We did not use the golf clubs because no one wacted to leave. My father in law refused to go anywhere because "I'm already here." My wife is a realtor and she and her partner were shocked at how great the house is.
Check in was not smooth. We arrived at dusk and the 4 on the lockbox was stuck so it would not open . Flashlight was not next to lockbox The only phone number our email gave was the housekeeper. She came over and before she arrived the lockbox opened on the 15th try. Only glitch. Was sad to leave and would stay there again in a heartbeat
We had an enjoyable stay. Great views from inside and outside of the ocean & pebble beach. Best part about this home is the large lanai -it is as big as the living/kitchen area. There is plenty of seating and eating options on the lanai. There is a ceiling fan as well as a type of shade covering (which unfortunately was not movable - it is good for blocking afternoon sun, but in the morning, it would be nice to have it roll up. You can see through it, but would be nicer without it). We spent a lot of time just sitting on the lanai, watching and listening to the ocean. At night the sound of the waves gently lulled us to sleep. The owner was great to deal with, very responsive. The house is well stocked, from dishes, bath towels, beach towels, pots, pans, condiments, etc. There was Kona coffee for us when we arrived. Nice! There is a nice large outside gas grill that made grilling fresh fish purchased at the Choice Mart a great option for dinner. There is copious information in the house in 2 binders. Inside the kitchen has a butcher block island, which is great for preparing meals. The kitchen is large and well appointed. The living/dining area had a large flat screened tv and a nice selection of Island music DVDs. I did note that it seemed the cable did not come in HD? Not sure, I may have been working the remote incorrectly. We didn't spend much time watching TV anyway! The location is South of Captain Cook in a large development called Kona Paradise. The house is all the way down at the bottom of the hill (thus the oceanside location). While the road is steep at times, I had no problem driving up or down, just put the car into low gear as directed by the owner. In terms of the location, you are quite a bit out from the closest town. It was about a 30 minute drive to most restaurants in Capt. Cook, the larger grocery store, etc. There is a fruit stand that is close by, as well as a soft sand beach (Hookeena I believe) that is nice and well worth a visit. The beach in front is a pebble beach for the most part and the water was too rough for swimming when we were there. It is visited frequently by the people in the neighborhood, but they didn't bother us at all. Only comment is that the furniture is a bit "tired" and could stand updating (stains on sofa, carpets on deck). Kitchen would benefit from handles on cupboards.
Dear VBRO readers,
Thank you for all of your reviews...always helps me to find great places! This was no exception...a beautiful house, lovely lanai, and crashing waves...could it get better?
Although the waves were too rough to swim in, we so enjoyed watching the majesty of their crashing. The local beach, five miles away was wonderful for swimming, snorkeling, and boogie boarding. We hiked into Captain Cook (my 60 year old husband and I)...and the hike back was really not too bad. Snorkeling beyond beautiful.
As we are Catholic, we went to the Painted Church for Christmas. What a lovely, warm congregation. Yarn leis and cookies after. Really one of the most moving services we have ever attended.
We met a little cat who we called "Puff". If you see him, he/she is beyond friendly. Please pet him for us.
We also saw mountain goats...be sure to go all the way on the Kings Path South to the sea arches.
Simply wonderful, you will love it.
Walk the historic Kings Trail - steps from the house.
