About Mikie

My great grandparents traveled from Portugal to the Hawaiin Islands and settled in Maui in the late 1800s. I was born in Maui and reared in Oahu. I went to Farrington High School and graduated when I was 17. I was married the same yr. and also had my first child. By the time I was 21, I had 4 children. I moved to San Diego in 1960, remarried and had my 5th child. I went into Real Estate sales in San Diego and sold RE for 20 yrs. By that time I had several rentals and retired from RE and lived off the income of my rentals. It was hard work

but it paid off in time.

Why Mikie chose Captain Cook

My husband Gary loved fishing and when we went to Kona for a vacation, he fell in love with it.

We wanted to build our home here, so we looked for a lot. We both wanted to

be by the ocean, however, it was slim pickings finding a lot on the ocean or by the ocean. We heard about Kona Paradise from a Realtor who showed us our lot. We were so excited because not only was it ocean front but it also was a swimming beach. It is very rare in Kona to have a beach that you can walk into and swim or snorkel without having to cross over sharp lava rocks.

What makes this house unique

It is so wonderful to just sit and listen to the waves washing thru the pebbles on the beach. In the winter time when the surf high, it is such a beautiful sight to see the large waves crashing down on the beach. I love watching the whales as they go by to settle in the coves south of us and birth their calfs before going back up north. I also love to see the dophins that come and visit our cove. My huband and I would anchor our boat in the cove and then go fishing. Just a few miles out we would catch a lot of fish that we'd share with our wonderful friends and nieghbors. Kona Paradise is truly paradise.

WOW - WHAT AN AWESOME PLACE!

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I met our son, daughter-in-law and grandson for a vacation and it was beyond our expectations. The house is beautiful, well maintained and everything you'll need for a wonderful stay. At the house, most of our time was spent on the lanai because of the views. Sunsets to enjoy, meals cooked on the grill, snorkling, swimming, walking, listening to music and falling asleep to the sound of ocean's waves. Great location, cool family history to this home and you can believe the pictures because it is what it is - AWESOME!

Location, location, location

We stayed at Paradise Ocean Hale recently and I can say that the house was very clean, comfortable and relaxing. The best part, as most have said, is the lanai. We didn't even use the living room or dining room in the house because all our spare time was spent on the lanai every morning and night and any other times that we were at the house.
The beds are very comfortable and the house is very well appointed with almost everything you need except for your food. Paper, plastics, bottled water, spices and condiments in the fridge are all waiting for your use.

My husband and I have been many places snorkeling and here on the pebble beach was one of the best places we've snorkeled. The colorful fish and coral were all a sight to see everyday. The pebbles keep the water clean and clear unlike most sandy beaches and you see fish right upon entering the water. There is a small black sand beach about a 5 minute walk to the north. We even saw some dolphins off the point one day.

Absolutely wonderful base location for touring the island we went north to Kona and south to South point. The drive is nothing....just takes some time to creep down it and once you're at the end of the road you're at Paradise Ocean Hale, truly an escape.

Private, quiet, clean and well equipped...and right on the ocean

  • 5 of 5
My partner and I stayed here for just over a week and loved it. The house is huge, immaculately clean, well-equipped, and comfortable (good beds, lots of comfy furniture, etc). And best of all, it's quiet and private, and looks out over Pebble Beach and the big blue pacific.

This home is in the south end of South Kona - so it is well away from the crazy busy tourist/resort areas. It's a 15 min drive to Ho'okena Beach, which has black sand, decent snorkelling, and often dolphins hanging about. Also about 25 min to Honaunau Bay and City of Refuge, where the snorkelling is amazing. Swimming and snorkelling also very nice at pebble beach, though the surge can be strong so watch the rocks and bring water shoes. Also because it's well out of Kona, it's not that long a drive to South Point and Volcano Park, both worth a visit.

The highlight of this place is the lanai/deck, which is massive, covered (ie, shady), and has tons of comfortable furniture. We watched the sunset out there every night. The house is also bright and breezy thanks to lots of windows and screened patio doors.

When renting a vacation spot sight unseen, it can be hard to know if a place will be as nice as advertised. This home is a great bet.

Some other reviewers have noted the steep drive - it is very steep but we had zero problems in our rental car. Also, someone was unhappy because the beach below the house isn't private property. It is the community beach for the subdivision, and so there are people coming and going (the house is just next to and above the small parking area people use). There are way fewer people coming to this beach than any other we visited, and we had no problems with noise. The house is above the beach, and there is a rock wall separating it, so the lanai is still really private and you don't see or hear people on the beach for the most part.

If you visit Honaunau Bay/City of Refuge - be sure to bring lunch or dinner to eat in the picnic area, which is the most picturesque spot we've been so far (sand, black lava, coconut palms swaying...) - ask park staff how to find it - the access road is kind of hidden and few people use it as a result.

Awesome Dawsome

  • 5 of 5
A great property for relaxing and enjoying the island. The most awesome sunset we have seen on the islands. The barbecue was a great find as we made every dinner just after sunset each night. We watched a 20 minute whale show out in the bay which was much better than Sea World. Saw spinner dolphins in the cove one morning, went face to face with wild goats on the cinder cone trail. The beach is public and we met a lot of very nice tourists and locals. The Choice market has a great fish selection and you have to meet the owner of Patz Pies, apizza joint near Captain Cook. Would highly recommend at least one breakfast at the Coffee Shack. The view above Kealakelea Bay is only surpassed by the food and the staff. Use this property as a base to explore the entire island. Don't fret the steep drive down. It is easy to do if you follow the owners instruction. And the end leaves you in paradise

WOW! I think we are spoiled now!
This was everything we expected, and more. As we arrived about 5 pm, before we could get the doors unlocked, from the Lani, one of our party spotted whales! The unpacking stopped right there for a few minutes! We settled in to watch the most beautiful, peaceful sunset, I've ever seen. We BBQ'ed and ate every meal on the lani, Always watching for the whales, dolphins, kayaker's scuba divers, and the locals, enjoying the pebble beach and waters. The neighborhood is peaceful, and private. We arrived during day light, so the road down to the house wasn't as scary as some other reviews have made it out to be. It didn't bother me at all. (I think San Francisco's hilly windy road is worse.)
We had more then enough room and privacy for our party of 4. The king size beds in the 2 main bedrooms, the closets, and our own doors out to the lani, The ocean lulled us to sleep at night and greeted us every morning, with the chirping of the birds. We where comfortable, had everything we needed. We are a bit timid with the Ocean as we are not "beach/water" people, but I would LOVE to go back again. It was truly a slice of paradise for us! Thanks for the memories!

Beautiful environment

Great views, beautiful environment. Very steep and long downhill getting to it. Do not arrive in unreliable vehicle. Also seems to be a hang out for a group of men in the area as most nights of the stay you could hear their voices.

Owner's Response: Aloha and thank you for your comments.
In our letter to our guests we do mention that the road to the house is steep (however it does not require a 4-wheel drive vehicle). We suggest that guests put their rental car into low gear and turn on the air conditioner which will slow the car even more, proceed slowly and stay to the right of the road. On the way up, leave the a/c off and make sure the car is in low and there should not be a problem.
Most of our guests guests do not have a problem with the road.

As for the comment regarding it being a hang out for a group of local men. There is limited parking near the beach for people to access the water.
From what we could find out, there were some local fisherman who had come down to do some night fishing. Since it is so quiet at night in our area, their voices carried up to the house. This has been presented to our neighborhood watch committee since the beach is to be closed at sunset.
