Overview

Elkins House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Sunroom, Porch and Gameroom, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 10 in Beds)

Granite countertops, marble, tile, and teak floors; hot tub; spacious decks; master suite with Jacuzzi; 2nd bath with Jacuzzi; laundry; open kitchen with granite countertops and modern appliances; screened porch with gas grill (under roof cover); fine furnishings throughout.

Great set-up for telecommuting if you can only manage a working vacation. Wireless satellite internet (with download limits), speakerphone, computer desk, and office chair in the very private sunroom.

The property has exclusive river beach access to the Shavers fork river and is engulfed in trees, on one side adjacent to 30+ acres of privately-owned undeveloped and open fields, 100 yards from two other cabins on the other side, and situated just 0.1 mile down the road from the one-million acre Monongahela National Forest.

The house features a stone fireplace, teak floors, vaulted ceilings, natural wood-plank paneling, wireless internet, 3 televisions with DVD players, and a 6 person hot tub. The gameroom includes a 32' flatscreen TV, Wii entertainment system (games available), assorted board games, Hot Wheels track, toddler puzzles, cards, and 100's of other toys and games. The gameroom has a card table and chairs, dart board, and water toys. There are 30+ classic DVDs for various ages available for viewing.

There are beds to sleep 10 plus (1) twin pullout: Main-level MBR – Queen; Sunroom attached to MBR – Twin Pull-out (ideal for child); Sleeping Loft – Full; Downstairs Bedroom #1 – Queen; Downstairs Bedroom #2 - Full / Twin bunk-bed plus Twin trundle. The game room can accommodate cots if needed (available upon request).

For a cozy winter, fall or early spring visit, the house has a forced-air gas furnace, supplemental baseboard heat in downstairs bedrooms, and a wood-burning fireplace in the living room (a moderate amount of firewood is provided).

In winter months, be prepared for snowy road conditions by driving a 4WD or suitable vehicle. The cabin is remote, so its narrow mountain road can be concerning to those not experienced. The gravel road is not suitable for motorcycles.

Pet friendly -- dogs only please, and no more than two dogs per reservation.

Owners provide a starter quantity of paper products, bathroom soap, and laundry/dish detergent. Personal toiletries are to be provided by Guests.

Cleaning fee covers laundry, dusting, vacuuming, mopping, bathroom/kitchen sanitizing, and garbage removal. Guests are expected to otherwise leave the house in the condition they found it.

We want to ensure that this property is the right fit for you! This is our vacation home that we are sharing – we are not a resort with a maintenance, concierge, and cleaning staff – and our prices reflect that limitation. That said we have put together as many resources as possible to help you plan your trip and enjoy your stay as if it were your own vacation home. We also have tried to stock the house so that you would not want for much upon your arrival.

If you are looking for a remote mountain getaway and are willing to roll with what comes from a country vacation, you will be hard pressed to find a more beautiful spot! Here are some things you should know...

The road to the house is gravel, and depending on whether the road crew has repaired the road recently there may be potholes. In most cases you can drive around them, but there may be one or two on the way that you’ll just need to slowly drive through. There are also no guardrails on the road, but it has several turnouts to allow cars to pass.

Because the house is surrounded by forests and the river there is plenty of nature to enjoy, but also to endure. Mice will occasionally come inside, and although we set out-of-sight humane traps to keep them from settling in, there is a possibility that you will see them during your stay depending on whether they've found a food source recently (it could be from a prior guest -- not your own doing.) We do, however, check to make sure that the kitchen implements are sanitary at the beginning of your stay.

The bug situation is that we are at a high enough elevation to not have a mosquito problem, but there will be gnats in the field, and moths at night wanting to get into the house. There will also be plenty of dead bugs that wedge themselves between the screens and the windows, and cobwebs sprouting up here and there.

If these aspects of nature are acceptable to you, then you will find a beautiful place of nature in which to relax and enjoy your vacation!

About Larisa

Carl and Larisa got married and moved to Elkins, WV in 2000. Larisa moved from DC, and Carl moved from VA. Each had prior roots in WV and longed to return. They now live in Elkins just 20 minutes from the 'All Get Out' riverside vacation rental.

Why Larisa chose Elkins

The location is ideal -- just far enough out to be immersed in the natural surroundings, but only 25 minutes from a full-service grocery store, movie theater, Davis and Elkins College, Randolph County Community Arts Center, antique shopping, and a YMCA. It is an hour from highly-rated golf or skiing. Spring and summer bring wonderful fishing, swimming, floating, and boating in the river; winter is great for cross-country skiing on the property or nearby, and alpine skiing is less than an hour's drive. Fall's foliage is not to be missed as the house is engulfed in trees and adjacent to the 1 million acre Monogahela National Forest, wonderful for hiking right out your door. Don't miss nearby Elkins to dine at a variety of restaurants, enjoy free exhibits at the Community Arts Center, and ride the scenic trains on the Durbin and Greenbrier Railroad. Davis and Elkins College is just 20 minutes away where you can enjoy live music and Appalachian arts at the internationally renowned 5-week long Augusta Festival. The Forest Festival every fall is a big draw, with carnival rides and almost two weeks of activities.

What makes this house unique

The property that this house sits on has been in Larisa's family since 1967. In 1995 Larisa decided to start construction on the property. She designed the house from the ground up and expressed her love of wood, light, warmth, and airiness into the architecture. The windows, decks, sunroom, and porch are situated for maximum enjoyment of the surrounding views of mountains, river, woods, and fields. The ventable skylights in the living room and loft provide sunlight and the lovely sound of rainfall. You can hear the river flow many nights when the windows are open.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time - it is so peaceful there and your house is beautiful. I don't know what I would have done on Thanksgiving without your fabulous kitchen.

Absolutely gorgeous and wonderful! Can't wait to go back!

  • 5 of 5

This house fully exceeded our expectations. It has wonderful views looking out over the river. The bedrooms are all spacious and well appointed. The master bedroom has a very nice oversized Jacuzzi tub. The downstairs has a full bathroom with Jacuzzi tub, and two bed rooms. There's a cute little loft bedroom. The main floor has a beautiful fire place, a living area, a full bathroom and a wonderful kitchen. Every utensil you may need is available, any cooking dishes you need are available. There were plenty of toys for the children. We took our sleds and there was a small hill out back that was just perfect for our little boys to sled on. Seeing everything snow covered and beautiful was wonderful. We only got to stay for the weekend, but I anticipate going back in the future. We really loved this place, and I wanted to go back as soon as we pulled out of the driveway.

Great Trip

Nice place to get away from it all. Hot tub was great. Had a nice flat lot in the back yard that is good for a baseball or football game. River is pretty. Great kitchen and dining room. Living room is nice with a fire place and good selection of dvd's too.

Beautiful, clean, quiet- perfect get away

  • 5 of 5

Larissa was so communicative and friendly, all throughout the planning, the stay and afterwards. The cabin is so beautiful with all the wood everywhere, and sky lights, and the kitchen is spacious, well equipped and organized. The dining table could easily fit a dozen folks, which is impressive, and the beds are comfortable and specious. The place was clean, warm and welcoming. We loved the fire place and the hot tub. At first, we were confused about the sheets not being on the bed, but then read that it was on purpose. So happily learned that putting on sheets on a bunk bed requires balance.

There are some short to medium long walks nearby that are beautiful.

The only recommendation I would have is to include a picture of the gate in the driving directions, or add something to make this red gate distinctive. It was a bit of an adventure finding it the first time, but once we send a picture to the other drivers, they had no problem.

Relax in Style

  • 5 of 5

A great place to unwind. This cabin has three floors and is perfect for 3 couples, families or in our case a husband wife getaway. The kitchen has everything you need for cooking and includes an espresso and coffee maker. The bed we used was very comfortable. We enjoyed the covered outdoor hot tub, it overlooks the river and is very private. A cozy living room with a working fireplace was all we needed. One would be advised to bring their own music and speakers if this is important to you. The road to the cabin is full of potholes but easily navigable when you take your time. There is good hiking and fishing right out the door. We look forward to a return visit.

Great Gathering Place for the Family

  • 4 of 5

I have two brothers and two sisters and we all grew up in West Virginia. Our brothers are still living there so we needed a place where the sisters could stay and host Thanksgiving dinner. The house offered everything we needed for our holiday. The kitchen was spacious and offered a big island for serving food, the dining table seated 10 with plenty of other spots to sit and eat. Our nephews stayed busy with games, movies and building a snowman...yes we did see plenty of snow. We wish we could have enjoyed the outdoor space a little more but we preferred to stay inside by the fireplace. We would love to return in the summer. Thank you Larisa for the hard work you do to share your home.

Wonderful place for a weekend away!

  • 5 of 5

My fiance and I take an annual trip for his birthday with 3 other couples. This was a great place for us to continue the tradition! The house had everything we wanted: a firepit for smores, access to hiking trails, a hot tub and rooms for each couple with an adult-sized bed. Larisa was really helpful in our planning and throughout the weekend and was responsive to our emails and texts. She helped us locate a local grocery store for supplies and made sure we were comfortable throughout the weekend. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a nice weekend away with friends!
