Ninety miles from the George Washington Bridge and NYC, and on a hill above the Rondout Creek in High Falls, is a one bedroom, 850 square foot apartment complete except for a kitchen, that overlooks the Mohonk Preserve and Mountain House on the Shawangunk Ridge. Although attached by a 20 foot hallway to the main house which is the owner's residence, this rental is otherwise completely private, with two entrances. There is no kitchen, but an an under-the-counter refrigerator and microwave are available for guests and the cupboard is simply stocked with a few utensils, and there is an electric coffee pot and tea kettle. Although the owners live on site, this rental space is totally reserved for guests of the West Wing only. The outdoor areas have beautiful views of the ridge, a walking path to a secluded spot on the creek, and 3 acres under cultivation for flowers, fruits, berries, vegetables and medicinal and culinary herbs. The property is located just a couple of miles from several trailheads into the Mohonk Preserve and is close to the famous Trapps rock climbing area and Minnewaska State Park. High Falls and Stone Ridge are just 4 miles from the door where you will find all the necessities including farmers' markets, the High Falls Food Co-op, a number of restaurants, a pharmacy, a liquor store with a great selection, a full grocery store, antiques, gifts, and gas stations. Everything you need for a great country experience!
Guests enter the West Wing through the double Eastlake stained glass doors into the private hallway lined with glass windows. This opens into an expansive room with 22 foot ceilings, a large Moroccan lantern over a huge Iranian carpet on polished concrete floors with radiant heat. One wall is lined with bookcases, another with a sideboard stocked with a teakettle, coffee machine, and an under-the-counter refrigerator. A flat screen TV is available along with HBO, network channels, Netflix and ITunes movie rental. A spiral staircase leads up to an open loft with a 14 foot long and 48' wide built in window seat/bed. Seating in the living area accommodates three in an upholstered club chair from the 1940's, a leather library chairs and more seating or lounging on the teak daybed. A ceiling fan and AC keep the West Wing comfortable in summer. I am a painter and my husband is a writer and runs a graduate program in NYC. We needed space to work and found this beautiful hilltop with creek access. We put up 2 barns from the early 1800s and started establishing gardens and an edible landscape. I also have two rentals just across the creek, VRBO #379093 and #381193. I love to build, save old structures and keep my hands dirty and busy when not in the studio. High Falls is a great location for an easy commute into the metropolitan area while being worlds away in a true Hudson Valley paradise.
Sterrett Smith purchased this cottage in 2002
This property is located in a geologically unique area adjacent to 25,000 acres of protected land that is home to the Mohonk Preserve, Mohonk Mountain House, Minnewaska State Park and many reservoirs within the watershed of NYC. The villages are historic, the food is fresh, and the countryside infectious. And it's an easy drive to so many great locations along the Hudson River, not to mention into NYC.
The West Wing is a cut above most other rentals in the area - sophisticated, refined, quiet. Just a perfect stay. Sterret was more than quick to respond and provided a wealth of knowledge of the area. Only stayed one night but will certainly try to return for a longer stay.
My boyfriend and I wanted to spend a relaxing weekend outside of the city, and Sterrett's High Falls rental was just that! Even though the West Wing is shared with the main house, it felt like we had the place to ourselves. The property is absolutely stunning, and the owners have truly put love and care into both the interior and exterior of the home. We loved the cozy furnishing inside (and the radiant heated floors!) and the amazing lawn surrounding the house. Also, the private path down to the creek was a real treat.
Sterrett is a truly lovely host who provided us with a very comprehensive guide prior to arriving outlining the attractions and dining options in the area. Each recommendation was better than the next! While visiting, Sterrett was also able to introduce us to her friend Jeanette, who cooked us a delicious private dinner in her home across the street. It was definitely one of the trip's highlights and you shouldn't miss it!
Overall, this rental is a real gem in the Hudson Valley, and a great value! We will certainly be back again as soon as we can!
My husband , two dogs and I stayed at this rental at the end of October and couldn't have enjoyed it more. The property is situated off a main road and is in turn exquisitely peaceful. Sterrett was completely gracious to us and allowed us to bring our two dogs. Who incidentally had the best time exploring her yard and claiming the settee in the living room. The property has fantastic views and encourages a mindful repose. My only recommendation to guests would be to arrange microwavable meals or plan to bring back food as the roads can be challenging at night for going out to dinner. But that's just my hangup. There is also a neighbor that will prepare hand cooked meals at your request that are out of this world! All in all we can't recommend this property or its owner enough, and we hope to stay there again in the near future. Thank you for such a lovely stay.
We only stayed 1 night and wish we had more time to linger but we're sure we will be back.
The property was very private & in a great location for our purposes.
Sterrett was a very attentive hostess and we felt like we were staying at a friends' guest cottage.
The property was very clean, comfortable and uniquely decorated.
We had a really enjoyable stay.
We stayed three nights in the West Wing and didn't want to leave! Loved eating breakfast outside the French doors, overlooking the beautiful gardens - and being visited by a hummingbird. Plenty of room to relax & read at the end of the day, and we enjoyed a cozy night's sleep and awakening to sunshine. We missed not having a bit more of a kitchen but managed pretty well w/ Sterritt's help. And we enjoyed probably our best meal of the trip at Jeannette's, a friend :& neighbor who offers a private dinner, prepared with care & passion. We'd definitely stay again in the West Wing when returning to the Hudson Valley.
Sterrett and her West Wing are unique gems. The land on which she and her husband built their house opens over an undisturbed distant view of the Mohonk Mountain House of the Shanwangunk Ridge. Not another house in sight. Just as pictured. Add the rustling of leaves in the wind, and birds busy in their own uninterrupted world. The architecture and furnishings of the West Wing are comprised of equally simple elements to spectacular effect. An over-sized Moroccan lantern enchants the dark night with luminous, colorful patterns. Bold color choices for the walls brings the dwelling the life and offset arresting paintings, some of which are Sterrett's own work. Clearly, I'm reaching for my highest praise! We loved our time at the Garrett, including conversations with Sterrett that excited us about exploring our own interests in the Catskills. We cancelled agenda items for a few days just to try on the feeling of actually living in such a dwelling! We left feeling relaxed and infused with new life.
