|Property type||house boat|
|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Sunset Point Houseboat is a favourite spot for those who seek peaceful relaxation and fishing, swimming, snorkeling, scuba, kayaking, birding with the great feeling of being away from it all. In reality far from the madding crowd!
The houseboat has three bedrooms and can comfortably accommodate six persons.
This unique wooden two storey houseboat has two ensuite bedrooms upstairs, a king sized ensuite studio bedroom downstairs, a well equipped kitchen, comfortable lounge, breakfast bar, dining and social area. The houseboat has decks on three sides, providing space for easy lounging, fishing, sunbathing, shade seeking, sunset admiring and midnight star gazing.
The studio bedroom is a large room sitting above high tide, it has a king size bed, with crisp cotton sheets and sliding glass windows overlooking the creek. Through one windows in the studio is a private screened in porch with sturdy wooden adirondack styled chairs, and the other double glass window opens onto the large deck which runs the length of the house and contains loungers, chairs, and a picnic table, this is a great outdoor spot to enjoy the beauty of the view, go fishing, swimming and snorkelling and watch the spectacular sunsets.
Also downstairs in the houseboat is the lounge and kitchen, both of which have the large double glass windows which allow the breeze to cool the house and provide maximum views of the creek. The lounge has a couch and a table with chairs. The room opens onto a deck where, in the afternoon, the shade is deep and the breezes constant.
A long breakfast bar separates the lounge from the kitchen / dining area and the easy bar style stools provide a classic spot to work or play with nothing but beauty all around.
The kitchen is well equipped with stove, fridge, water cooler, pots, pans, cutlery and dishes, it has a table with chairs, and a couch for relaxing by the beautiful creekside. The kitchen has a large double glass sliding window and a glass door leading to the deck. Here you will be able to prepare your meals and enjoy the view of the creek at the same time. The fishermen can provide the fresh fish straight from the creek to the plate.
The long deck is the perfect spot to sunbathe, and a great place to securely moor a boat. Here steps lead down into the creek so that you can quickly immerse yourself in the soothing healing tidal waters of Fresh Creek. The old folks of Andros say that bathing in the out going tide is the best remedy for taking away the aches and pains of life and revitalizing the body in the mineral rich out going tide which draws the tiredness from the body. Swimming from the houseboat is refreshing and snorkeling will reveal the critters who inhabit this area. Under the houseboat it is possible to spend a happy time watching the amazing array of reef fishes who live beneath the house.
A spiral staircase curls upstairs where there are two large bedrooms, both with ensuite bathrooms and creekside views. The Master bedroom has a king sized bed and sliding glass doors with a private balcony to sit on while watching out for incoming fish, this vantage view of the creek allows the watcher to help the fisherman cast in the right direction.
The second upstairs bedroom has twin beds, an ensuite bathroom, creekside views and is safe for children.
The houseboat was named Sunset Point due to the spectacular sunsets we get in this part of the world, amazingly every one is different and the view of the sunsetting against the water with a myriad of colours ranging from pinks to oranges to deep blues to rich black silhouetted trees along the coastlines are inspriing to behold.
The house is decorated in the lovely island prints of Androsia a local batik factory, the bedding is 100 % cotton, there is a barbecue grill located on the adjacent land.
Sunset Point Houseboat is the perfect island getaway from it all spot.
Peter and Gabrielle Douglas have been running Sunset Point Houseboat since 2006. 'It is a great little business for the island as it allows us to meet interesting people from all over the globe while providing them with a wonderful vacation.'
Peter operates the 'Outside kitchen', a restaurant which delivers right to the Houseboat. The menu is all about fresh sea food and delicious is one word which describes the qualtiy and taste.
The houseboat used to be located in the Miami River, Florida and came to Andros in 1969. It is reported that the last time the metal swing of the Fresh Creek bridge was opened was when they allowed the houseboat to go through and then the key was lost.
Peter and Gabrielle bought this houseboat in 1989 and lived here for 14 years, raising their family. When the time to move out came around we knew that this was a great opportunity to share this remarkable wooden houseboat with the world, we know what an amazing place this is and how peaceful one can feel listening to the unceasingly gentle sounds of the ocean.
We had an amazing time on the houseboat and on Andros in general! The location of the house is truly unique with incredible views. The sunsets are beautiful and the night sky has millions of stars. I loved waking up with the view over the creek - right from the bed.
All sides of the house have a wooden decks with chairs, so if you want to sit in the sun or in the shade you will always find a place that suits you. There even is an outdoor deck with mosquito nets around it, so you can stay outside at night when insects are most active (but definitely bring spray too!)
We loved swimming, fishing, kayaking etc. right from the house. You can explore Fresh Creek or any of the beautiful beaches in the area, most of the time you will have them all to yourself.
We cooked ourselves almost every day, the fully equipped kitchen really had everything we needed. Grocery stores are close by, a 5-10 min drive by car. Don't expect a great variety of products, the best day is on Friday when the boat with fresh food arrives (so we heard).
Don't expect a lot of luxury: bathrooms are basic but clean (with a slight scent to the water) and there is no AC (but lots of fans to keep you cool) or Wifi. Perfect to disconnect from the outside world and enjoy nature.
Gabrielle was very helpful in answering any question we had and prepared lots of documentation on what to do / where to go.
A big thank you!
Great place right in the salt water estuary. Like living in an aquarium. Great exploring , beaches, night skies and locals. Owners were very nice. Only issue is tap and shower water which has a distinct sulpher odor. This is a deal breaker if you're a city dweller. The more outdoorsy can make their way past it. Andros is a unique island with many natural treasures and the house boat is a great place to strike out from.
Beautiful, spacious, clean rooms with the most wonderful views. Flocks of ibis flying past, the most amazing fish swimming around the houseboat, bonefish fishing flats in walking distance, comfortable beds. Very friendly, helpful and welcoming owners. We loved the white beaches, the mangroves, the amazing wildlife and nature of the Island. It's a piece of paradise. Would recommend to anyone and happily go again if I have the opportunity.
Andros Island is an amazing place. Truly off the grid. A real genuine place surrounded my nature. The location of the house boat along Fresh Creek was amazing. With the bluest of blue ocean, beaches, and Mangrove tidal flats all around you, nature truly is at your doorstep. Very comfortable rustic accomadations with everything you need. An amazing place!
Sunset Houseboat rental is true to its listing description, clean, and well-maintained. We have rented homes, "on the water", on several other of the Bahamas "Family" Islands but this was by far the most relaxing. Each morning I sipped my tea on the "patio" while my husband fished right next to me. The water was alive with various beautiful fish (like the Lion Fish!), along with a family of dolphins that would at times play just out front. In previous rentals it was clear the owners had their, "good linens", tucked away but in this instance the linens on the bed, and the comfort of the bed, were equal to any 4-star hotel in the world. The owners, Gabrielle and Peter, were always available if we needed something, but were elusive enough that we had a strong sense of privacy. We spent our days touring the beautiful Andros and swam in its Blue Holes, but truly the highlight of our trip was enjoying Peter's thoughtfully prepared meals while watching the sun set sitting outside over the water. I would highly recommend this location for anyone with a love of the true Bahamas and fully intent to return ourselves.
It truly is the perfect peaceful spot for relaxing, fishing, birding, swimming & beaching and then some
We arrived for a short visit over the 4ht of July weekend 2014 – so very much enjoyed ourselves. Peter and Gabrielle were very accommodating and made us feel right at home. The Houseboat is exactly like the pictures show – very clean - and is very close to the Andros Fresh creek Airport. The houseboat location area could not have been better – being over the water and seeing the marine life right under the house while watching the stingrays and fish swim by was just spectacular. Quiet – the only noise that was heard was the birds, the wind in the trees and the occasional boat in passing and laughter.
While having A/C would have been a plus – it was not bad and a tradeoff for others with this unique location. There are no complaints only a suggestion on the house water – being that the water comes from the fresh creek it does have a sulphur smell. If possibly having a purifier to remove the smell that would be awesome. Peter and Gabrielle also provided fresh 5 gallon cooler of water for drinking.
The Bahamian people are the best people – to go to a place where everyone says hello, will go to their house and offer you fresh snapper, conch etc – always with a smile means so much to me. This place is truly untouched. We had 4 different scenic adventures with snorkeling in Fresh Creek, the ledge by the lighthouse, the small coral by Small Hope and then the Rainbow Blue Hole – even stayed in the house built by the survivors of “Naked and Afraid in Andros”.
I wish to thank Peter, Gabrielle and all the Bahamian people who truly went out of their way to provide everything we wished for and then some. My heart will always yearn to visit back again soon and I definitely recommend the houseboat to everyone.
Absolutely loved staying on the Houseboat!!!! NO complaints whatsoever!!! The moment we stepped inside and felt the breezes coming off Fresh Creek, I knew this was going to be an amazing place to stay.
First of all, leading up to our trip Gabrielle was super helpful, answering tons of questions! When we got there, the Houseboat was extremely clean. Also, Gabrielle and Peter were very helpful and friendly!
The Houseboat was AWESOME!!
We loved laying out back at night on the loungers watching the stars!
We loved sleeping in the comfortable bed and waking each morning to feel the ocean breezes!
We loved eating breakfast out back the first morning as dolphins swam by!
We loved snorkeling right off the boat and seeing a Spotted Eagle Ray!
We cooked all our meals on the Houseboat. The kitchen had everything we needed. We did most all of our shopping at Mable's Meat Market which is very close. They are very friendly and helpful there! Tano (hope I am spelling that right) even taught me how to make a local favorite, Peas and Rice!
To be honest, my wife was a bit skeptical about Andros Island in general. I booked the vacation as a surprise 40th birthday present. I was also somewhat undecided about which island to take her to. I originally felt Andros would be best, and once I found the Houseboat, that sealed the deal. Even then, she was skeptical. We have travelled quite a bit (Europe, French Polynesia, Hawaii), but from start to finish, this was the best 5 day vacation we've ever had!!! It was finally a vacation where we came back refreshed! It was also an UNPLUGGED vacation, something so many of us need!!!
Andros was GREAT! We loved exploring the island! From Morgan's Bluff down to Behring Point and over to Red Bays. We checked it all out. We loved the blue holes and the deserted beaches, especially Somerset Beach. Fresh Creek was great for snorkeling and kayaking. So much to do!!!
Plus, the people of Andros are so friendly and helpful!! Everyone waves and is more than happy to give directions and advice!
As much fun as we had during the days, the best part was always coming back to the Houseboat!!! I found myself waking up earlier and earlier each day so I could not only enjoy the evenings, but the mornings as well. We just loved it there, and miss it so much!
The Houseboat is the BEST. Thanks to Gabrielle and Peter for making it available and for being great hosts!!! We hope to see you again soon!!!
Andros is a rural island which appeals to the eco tourist, and adventurer.
Known as the 'fly fishing capital of the world', our anglers find excitement and tranquility walking the flats which are just minutes from the Houseboat or boating into the incredible wilderness of Fresh Creek, The Joulter Cays or the Bights to name just the famous locations.
Andros also boasts of having the third largest barrier reef in the world just minutes off shore, this reef is considered one of the healthiest in the Caribbean and divers can enjoy a variety of experiences, from 185 feet over the wall to shallow patch reefs.
Birders rave about the endemic and migrant birds they can observe here piping plovers winter here and all year long you'll be able to see the shoreline, forest, coppice and mangrove birds.
Kayakers drift to remote beaches up the creek on an in going tide, then spend the day birding, fishing or exploring the blue holes before catching a ride home with the out going tide.
Star gazers enjoy the wide open vistas, the darkness of the island means there is no man made light to spoil the views and the stars are easily the best show in town.
Just a few minutes walk from the Houseboat there are man made canals which were dug in the 1950's, these canals are great for swimming laps in a safe, refreshing and comfortable location.
Two miles away the art seeker will find the Androsia cottage industry, an island batik factory where beautiful cotton fabric is hand waxed and dyed with the vibrant colors which abound in nature.
At the harbour mouth at Andros Town there is a beautiful sandy beach and a Lighthouse which was build it 1892, the brave can still climb to the top!
Andros is the beach combers haven with miles and miles (and miles) of sandy deserted beaches, here you'll share your picnic with the birds and be able to blow away the cobwebs in your mind. Of special note is Somerset creek beach which is one of those places which inspired the invention of the word 'wow', because it is a wow so beautiful beach.
Andros is home to the most blue holes in the world, our blue holes are world famous for their crystal clear fresh water, and some of them are easily accessed for swimming. Hikers can walk for miles through the National Parks.
Andros has something for anyone who loves the outdoors.
