This large unique open floor plan duplex is in the heart of Boston.
This location has plenty of space for you and your pets' extended stay in Boston. This large (1,800 SF) unique open floor plan duplex is filled with handmade furniture and art. It's located in Boston's South End, steps away from Copley Square, Back Bay and the Avenue of the Arts, as well as Symphony Hall, the Prudential Center and the Longwood Medical area. Please keep in mind, that because this apartment is on a main avenue in the heart of the city, there will be city street sounds.
We are two artisans who created a unique duplex in the heart of the Boston (before the south end was cool) and lived there for 28 years before moving out of the city and onto the next project.
j.j. lomartire purchased this apartment in 1983
In 1983, the South End was not what it is now. It's the largest victorian neighborhood in the United States and it was filled with buildings suffering from benign neglect. The late 70', early 80's began the renaissance of the South End and now you can see the results of all of the work that has been done to this neighborhood.
This entire building was a gut rehab, even the first floor was removed and repositioned three feet higher than it had been to allow some natural light into the kitchen. Everything in the unit is custom, from the kitchen cabinets to the lovely quarter sawn white oak wall system.
Very eclectic and the best location available!! It was close to the public transportation network with several options, clean, safe location, right next door to two fabulous restaurants for evening. My teens walked next door to anchovies in their Jammie/lounge wear for inexpensive standard grilled cheese. Hunby grabbed a beer, and nice eateries abound as well. We were spoiled and didn't use Neil's well equipped kitchen as much as we thought ! Couldn't have asked for more!(expect maybe less fancy microwaveable plates:)
Three girls in Boston for the weekend stayed here and had a great time! It was so unique from the tin ceilings and brick walls to the artwork located throughout the place. It was close to a grocery store, liquor store and several T stops. Right next door was a great Italian restaurant as well. I would have given it 5 stars except it was a little noisy in the building and on the street but overall it was terrific!!! Would definitely stay here again. The owners were very communicative and easy to deal with.
I have just returned from boston with my family, this place is amazing, it was extremely spacious even for a family of 5. With so many little added touches, the butchers table, chairs, camel (especially the camel). You can tell from the minute you walk in this is a place that is well cared for, it is very clean and J.J left us a book full of details and recommendations, you couldn't ask for more in a host. We were given guidance on how to get to Salem for Halloween (highly recommend), the airport and generally around boston. We are telling all our friends about this place and hoping to return in the near future. Thanks for a great stay!!
By far, this was the coolest, most spacious, and creative space we've ever stayed. J.J. is an extraordinary host, very responsive and helpful. From the moment we opened the sliding wooden door, we were hooked. The place is huge and clean and the decor kept us smiling. The camel, barber chair, moose head, great original art, brick walls, and hilarious dining table have to be seen to be believed. All those fun touches were a bonus to the very comfortable bed, incredibly well-stocked huge kitchen, and cozy living room. Since there were only 2 of us, sometimes we lost each other in this crazy loft. We kept opening doors and finding more surprises: a giant closet, nice-size bathroom with tons of fluffy towels, a second half bath, and washer/dryer (which we used). The apt is a bit dark, but great for sleeping in and very quiet, despite a neighborhood bar right next door. The info notebook J.J. has in the apt is really helpful. We used the recommendations and dined at delicious Petit Robert Bistro just down the block (we were lucky to get a last-minute res on Open Table on a busy Friday night) and famous Giacomo's next door - great food, friendly service. We were sorry that highly recommended Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe a few doors down is permanently closed. We loved this South End neighborhood, close to the T and Newbury Street and great for walking among the historic brownstones and tree-lined streets. If we lived in Boston, this would be our 'hood. J.J. and Neal turned a former historic storefront into the finest and coolest vacation loft ever.
I Love This Place! Unique doesn't begin to describe it. Funky? Kitchy? Artsy?
Around every turn is a surprise, from a life sized camel (!), to a portholed bathroom, to original artworks, this apartment is an utter delight. On two open divided levels, it is airy tho a bit dark. Re-designed and built by the owners from the studs out, it was obviously a work of love. Thanks J.J., a lovely hostess.
This open floor plan duplex located in Boston's South End speaks volumes with handmade furniture and art throughout! The furnishings are truly beyond words as you will marvel at the unique touches of this home. The painstaking measures the homeowners took to preserve the original feel is amazing including the stone/brick walls and gorgeous wood work. This home is well appointed with everything that you will need to make you feel home away from home. We cannot say enough about the homeowners as they were just an email or phone call away to answer any questions throughout our stay. This is a phenomenal attribute when vacationing in an unfamiliar area.
The location of this duplex was amazing as you are within walking distance of dining, parks, and Boston attractions. We stayed at this property while attending a conference at the Marriott in Copley Square which was only minutes to walk from the house. We enjoyed the proximity and quality of the food from Giacomos and Anchovies located right outside our door for dinner. The aroma of these fine restaurants can lure you right through their doors. Unfortunately for us Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe was closed as the sign read "gone fishin'!" We also tried The Five Horses Tavern about 5 blocks down on Columbus Ave. which was a nice place for dinner and drinks and provided outside dining which was equally enjoyable on a beautiful Boston evening.
In Copley Square we visited Kings Bowling and Billiards as well as Five Napkin Burger and the Cheesecake Factory that provide outside dining.
There are many beautiful parks in Boston within walking distance of the house. We especially enjoyed the Boston Botanical Gardens with the swan boats. We took the duck tour and had quite the animated tour guide known as the Joker from Las Vegas. The tour was fun and provided a lot of historical information about Boston.
Being a pet friendly property was an attribute that we were especially grateful for. Our golden retriever, Charlie, absolutely loved it and adjusted quite well to city life. There is even a dog park within a block of the house as well as a unique dog store where Charlie got biscuits decorated like whales.
We highly recommend this home on Columbus Ave. Should your travel plans take you to Boston you do not want to miss out on the opportunity to stay here. Undoubtedly, if we are in the area again we certainly hope to be Neal and J.J.'s guests. We cannot imagine a neater place to stay than this in all of Boston!
