WAIPIO VALLEY NANEA ~ NEAR THE CLIFFS OF WAIPIO VALLEY LOOKOUT

Waipio House Rental Photos and Description

Studio, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Welcome to WAIPIO VALLEY NANEA.

Nanea (Na-nay-ah) means tranquility, relaxing, enjoyable, and fascinating; that is exactly what this location is. Our property sits on the 1000 foot cliffs leading to the historic Waipio Valley, or Valley Of the Kings, where many of the ancient Hawaiian ali’i (kings) once resided. This is a very sacred place steeped in Hawaiian history. The stunningly beautiful Waipio Valley is verdant and lush, teaming with waterfalls, fishponds, hiking trails and rivers that lead to a pristine mile long black sand beach.

The ‘Ohana (family guest cottage) which adjoins our home is a newly constructed large studio with 2 private entrances, one with a private patio. The living space is open and fills with sunlight. It features a romantic four post teak bed, a kitchenette area with everything you will need to cook and enjoy a lovely meal, a spacious bathroom with slate floors, granite counters, a walk-in shower big enough for two, a walk-in closet, and a lounge area with a peek-a-boo view of the ocean. A stroll through the back yard puts you right at the cliffs edge, with expansive views of the ocean, the valley cliffs and even Maui, on a clear day. It’s quiet, peaceful, and intimate; the perfect place to come home to after your adventures and explorations of the Big Island. Use ‘Waipio Valley Nanea’ as your base for day hikes into Waipio Valley, or for more adventurous travelers, camping trips into Waimanu Valley. A hot shower and cozy bed will always await you upon your return.

Aloha!

We've spent the majority of our lives traveling, looking for that 'place' that stops us from looking, and we believe we have found paradise here. Before we moved to the Big Island of Hawaii we were living and sailing on our 31 foot trimaran. We are adventure travelers, always searching for that unforgettable experience, and we know what it's like finding it, and then wanting a hot shower and clean cozy bed to curl up in at the end of the day, or at end of a few days of hiking, camping, or exploring. We are both avid sailors, surfers, divers, hikers, naturalists and environmentalists. I have been a scuba diving guide and tour guide and know how rewarding it is to help people stop and appreciate the moment, and I must say, every moment here will overwhelm you with extreme natural beauty. We look forward to meeting you.

We love the ocean, the tropics and the simple life. The Hamakua Coast of the Big Island is all that and more. From it's small bucolic towns, epic ocean views and expansive green countryside to it's welcoming communities and families. The low population density means no traffic, and no stress. We are often the only ones on the beach in Waipio Valley and have the surf all to ourselves. The intoxicating smell of wild ginger fills the air, mingling with the scent of sweet guava and gardenia. The wildlife is abundant, wild horse graze freely in the valley and it's a birdwatchers dream. In the winter months we sit on the cliffs and watch the Humpback Whales spy hopping and breaching. And finally, it seems as though there is always a pocket of sunshine on the cliffs of Waipio Valley : )

A VACATION FROM OUR VACATION!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed for 4 nights in early-June, in the middle of our 3-week holiday on the Big Island. Staying at the Nanea ohana felt like taking a vacation from our vacation. The place is even lovelier than what the photos on the website depict. The place was so nice we hung around the place more than we usually do when we ‘re on vacation.

Yes, the ohana is very spacious and elegantly furnished, the 4-poster bed is magnificent, the seating area is well appointed and comfortable, the view from the backyard is stunning (only a peek from the lanai mind you, just as the website photo shows), the ground and garden are beautifully landscaped, the property is safe and secure, and it’s mere steps from Waipio Valley. But there’s so much more not quite evident from the photos alone. First, the bathroom was great! Not only was it spacious and airy but having a separate toilet with a door ensures a couple or threesome can be using the T&B at the same time. Second, the storage room, off to the other side of the kitchen is spacious. It has the fridge and microwave and ample shelf space. We had more than enough space to store groceries, hang up or put our clothes in shelves and stow away our bags. Third, the couch is super-comfy. One of us especially enjoyed the chaise. There are windows catty-corner in that spot so there’s always a lovely breeze when one sits there to read or surf the web (the wifi signal is very good). It rained in the evenings when we were there, and that corner was the best place to be! Many a time, we’ve dozed off to a soft breeze and the sounds of gently falling rain, the rustle of leaves in the wind and the rhythmic chirping of the coqui frogs (the latter did not bother us one bit). Fourth, sitting in the lanai was so relaxing. Bamboo grows all along that border area and when the wind blows and the leaves rustle, the feeling is so peaceful! Fifth, the nearby town of Honokaa, was a delight: friendly people, charming shops along the main street, lively coffee shops and restaurants. Finally, our hostess, Kendyll was absolutely lovely. She was gracious, solicitous, helpful and enthusiastic. We enjoyed our talks with her (solar roadway – yeah!) and grateful for all her help. We’d love to come back and maybe catch Flip next time. Overall, a fabulous place to stay and we highly recommend Nanea to couples who would like to enjoy the beauty of the Hamakua Coast and a tranquil place to stay.

AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING

My husband and I stayed here for part of our honeymoon- and my only complaint is that we couldn't stay longer. The house is accurately represented in all the photos online, with unbelievable views and walking distance to the Waipi'o Valley lookout. The place is immaculate, the owners Kendyl and Flip are so extremely nice and so are their dogs... The accommodations were perfect, so clean and sweet and romantic, we also LOVED the chirping of the frogs all night it was something we had read a few complaints about but really it was magical to us. I hope we get a chance to go back and stay with them again- it was everything we expected and more!!

I STAYED FOR 2 WEEKS BUT WOULD LIKE TO STAY FOR 2000 WEEKS -- I'M NOT KIDDING

I Stayed for 2 Weeks but Would Like to Stay for 2000 Weeks -- I'm Not Kidding
  • 5 of 5
I stayed at Nanea for 2 weeks in April 2014. I have been visiting Hawaii for more than 30 years and this was my best stay ever. I was looking to disconnect from the daily grind of the corporate world and to have some alone time. I was travelling alone but always felt safe and secure due to the location and Kendyll and Flip's kindness. I'm sure if I had a zillion questions, they would have been available to answer them. Personally, I wanted some solitude and I got that. The pictures posted on line are accurate -- actually the Ohana house and view are BETTER than the pictures. The property sits on top of the garage but there is virtually no noise except the wonderful rain and the sounds of the outdoors. It is very private. The little noise you hear is from the fabulous dogs -- Timber and Ely. It's true the house is steps away from the Waipi'o overlook so you'll get a little bit of noise from cars but it's not much at all. It was super clean and the shower was better than the shower at my house!
Although I had a lot of solitude at the house it was a 15 minute drive into the little town of Honokaa and the "big town" of Waimea is a beautiful 25 minute drive away if you have to have Starbucks or McDonald's. 1.5 hours will get you to Costco--but again, a lovely drive out of the rain forest into the "dry side." A 45 minute drive will get you to the best beaches in the world. There is no phone cell signal at this time but the wifi is powerful so email, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook all you want but really don't.....just listen to the rain and go out in the yard, look at a fruit tree and sit on the bench and look at the ocean and the valley.

THIS PLACE WAS GREAT!

  • 5 of 5
We had never been to the Big Island. Looking for a place to visit on the north side of the island, we found the Waipio Valley. It was off the beaten path and judging by the photos, it looked like a place we wanted to see. Next, was finding a place to stay.
We happened on the Waipio Valley Nanea. By looking at their website, it looked fine.
When we arrived, we were greeted by the owners. The lodging exceeded our expectations. It is decorated nicely and spacious for 2 people. We spent 2 nights there and we had a very good time. We got to go into the valley to see the sights of the waterfalls and the black sand beach.
We would recommend the Waipio Valley Nanea to anyone that wants to relax and to enjoy the beauty of the the north shore.

PERFECT LOCATION!

  • 5 of 5
In any guide to the Big Island you will find the Waipio Vally as one of the "must see" attractions. This condo can't be more perfectly placed in relation to it, located only a hundred yards or so before the Waipio lookout point. This is also the access point for driving or hiking down into the valley. From the property it is also a stunning ocean view. The condo is nice and well equipped, and the owners are perfect hosts, whether there is anything you need or if you prefer to be on your own. They also have two friendly "aloha"-dogs, but they will also leave you alone if you prefer. A special treat for me was to discover that behind the name "Flip" was a fellow Scandinavian like myself. For a trip around the island staying at different condos and cottages, this was a perfect stop that I can highly recommend!

AN ABSOLUTE GEM!!!

  • 5 of 5
We loved, loved, loved staying at Waipio Nanea. It's in a beautiful world-class setting and the accommodations were wonderful and new. Beautiful furnishings, a big deck with ocean views, and the hosts were kind, caring, and hospitable. When we return to the Big Island, if Waipio Nanea is available, that's where we'll be staying.
