This charming little studio is a Berkeley Hills gem, with every inch comfortable, cozy and creatively functional. While the photo was attractive, the studio has a warmth and sophistication that's even more lovely, which you notice the moment you walk in. The shelves lined with fascinating books make it inviting to read at night after days out enjoying the offerings of Berkeley and San Francisco. I was visiting my daughter at UC Berkeley during my week's stay and also finishing my master's thesis project, and the studio provided everything I needed to do both beautifully. My thoughtful host brought in an extra folding table so I could spread out my work and set up my portable office. For visiting, the #65 bus runs up and down the hill from Lawrence Hall of Science to the campus every hour, with a stop two minutes from the studio. It is the best $2 bus ride I've ever been on, and riding up to the top is a must for the dramatic view, and it's nice to stop at the science center, too, especially the planetarium. The studio owner was always available, thankfully, as my plane arrived much later than expected. She afforded me total privacy, as well as any suggestions when I asked. The wonderful coffee, tea and chocolate were a lovely touch and having the coffee pot, microwave, small refrigerator and all the kitchen utensils gave me the freedom to make one trip to the grocery store for sustenance so I could work and relax at my leisure. The one time element to plan for is that the bus stops going up the hill from downtown Berkeley, where the BART station is, at 8 p.m. I was fortunate that my daughter drove me around for later evenings, so just one small thing to plan for, and with that arranged, perhaps by friends or taxi, no need for a car because the bus ride, the flowering trees, the birds and the stunning homes nestled in the hills make getting around a delight. I would most certainly love to stay at this lovely studio on my next visit to Berkeley. The only thing I'd change is that I'd stay longer.
