Imagine leaving the hustle and bustle behind as you drive up to this lovely log home nestled in a private wooded setting. You feel the stress just melt away. It is a kind of rustic luxury that only exists in a true mountain retreat.

As you step through the front door you will experience lodge style architecture from the log walls and open living area to the cat walk that joins two loft bedrooms. There are four total bedrooms and three full baths including a large master suite that offers privacy and convenience. Grab a sweater and take your morning coffee out onto the large long front porch. Chances are you'll spot a deer or three and the fresh air will infuse your spirit and get you ready for the day.

While visiting, our guests have to concern themselves with only one thing: how to spend their time…

After much deliberation, we have chosen the name for our cabin… We would like to welcome you to our “Sleeping Bear Lodge.” We have been so inspired by the rich history of the Jim Thorpe region, from the Delaware Indians to the coal mining boom to the tale behind the current name of the town. And there is one story that really stood out for us…

In our quest for area information, we discovered that the town of Jim Thorpe was, until the mid-1950s, known as Mauch Chunk (pronounced “mock” Chunk). The name is derived from “bear mountain” in the language used by the Lenape people and it is in reference to a nearby mountain on the Lehigh River which they believed resembled a sleeping bear. We found out that the mountain itself is in fact called Bear Mountain. We just love the rich Native American history of the area and the romantic origin of Mauch Chunck. So we thought “Sleeping Bear Lodge” a fitting name. We hope that it inspires you to visit and discover more of the area's wonderful history first hand.

After almost a year of working on our cabin, we are happy to be sharing it with other vacationers. And we're getting great feedback! With it’s custom details, warm furnishings and loads of character and charm, we have tried to create the perfect vacation atmosphere for our guests to enjoy.

In the Spring and Summer, it’s just a short walk to the pool or to the lake for fishing and swimming, and our area is a perfect spot for riding bicycles. If you would like to enjoy longer hikes and scenic rides along the Lehigh Valley Gorge, head into quaint and historic downtown Jim Thorpe (sometimes called the Switzerland of America and just 10 minutes down the mountain). Here you will find charming boutiques, fabulous eateries, live music at the pubs and so much more. While you’re visiting make plans to take a historic train ride through some of the most beautiful scenery around. In addition to downtown, you will be close to top golfing and rafting destinations as well as music venues, vineyards, horseback riding and the Pocono Raceway.

Of course Winter activities abound in the area and many top skiing destinations are just a short drive from the cabin. Or put on your snowshoes and head out the front door. Whatever your interests, you will be delighted in what the Pocono region offers.

Whenever we tell people we have a vacation home here, their response is always “I just love Jim Thorpe!' We really believe you will too.

Guestbook comments from the owner
Steve & Marg,

We came from Lancaster, PA for a weekend away and really enjoyed the Sleeping Bear. We had a good bit of snow but still made it into town for Winterfest 2014!

Your place is beautiful! We most enjoyed the wood stove, the master bedroom suite, the catwalk and all of the hidden detail in your decorating.

Thank you for welcoming us into your home!

WONDERFUL FAMILY STAY FOR THE 2ND YEAR

  • 5 of 5
This is the 2nd year my family has gathered at this wonderful home for a long weekend. The home has plenty of space for everyone and the property has room for the boys to play outside.

We took advantage of the close proximity to Jim Thorpe and also enjoyed the community swimming pool very much.

Looking forward to coming back again soon.

A MOUNTAIN BEAUTY!

  • 5 of 5
We had the privilege of staying at this incredible mountain retreat recently and we couldn't have been more thrilled with our stay! The location and setting was almost magical, with the snow gently falling, the deer meandering around the property, the cozy atmosphere, and the tasteful decor. It was the most relaxing and comfortable stay - we will definitely be coming back! Thank you so much for sharing your exquisite log cabin in the woods and making it available for others to enjoy and rejuvenate in the surroundings. It couldn't have been more perfect!!

FULLY STOCKED, WELCOMING, BEAUTIFUL HOME

  • 5 of 5
This home has everything your group could need. The kitchen is fully stocked and they even include paper products, dish soap and laundry detergent. The layout of the cabin is perfect for the group to socialize and the playground/pool area is super fun. The beds are extremely comfortable and the porch is amazing. I highly recommend this cabin to anyone interested in staying in Jim Thorpe. It was a beautifully decorated homey, fully stocked home and perfect for families.

PERFECT GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5
My family all met at the sleeping bear lodge for the long MLK weekend. Traveling from both coasts and places in-between, all were totally surprised at the beautiful cabin and surroundings. The pictures only scratch the surface of what this cabin has to offer. We skied, tubed, played paintball, and toured the area. Mostly though, we enjoyed our time together in the cabin, playing games, preparing great food and relaxing. We are coming back again for sure. Many thanks to the owners for providing such a wonderful place for others to share the Pocono experience. Many thanks also to Nikki for expertly handling our rental and ensuring the place was in top-notch condition

EXCELLENT !

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I were completely satisfied. Everything was as advertised or better.
All of the smallest details were thought of in advance, this is what separates the professionals from the amateurs.

The Cabin is beautifully decorated with nostalgic memorabilia. I enjoyed reading the Jim Thorpe local history book during our stay.

The small details were most important to us:
-*Communication with the property manager was prompt, precise and professional from start to finish.*
-The cabin was meticulously cleaned prior to our arrival.
-Greeted with a complimentary bottle of wine on the kitchen counter.
-A Christmas tree was provided during our Holiday stay
-Pre- cut fire wood
-Just about every kitchen accessory was provided to include a beer bottle opener that I forgot to bring.
-Laundry detergent, dish detergent was provided
-BBQ grill
-We were refunded our security deposit within 24 hours of our departure.

The location was excellent, we were within 20 minutes of big boulder ski resort. We saw several deer on many occasions walk directly in front of the porch. Our kids were amazed !

I shopped and compared prices for about 3 weeks before deciding on this cabin and I'm glad we were patient. The price was worth the experience and customer service.

I would certainly recommend this cabin. We had family visit us from the Philadelphia area and they were amazed when they walked in. We are already considering making reservations for next year.

I would like to thank the property manager (Nikki) and the owners (Marg and Steve) for a very memorable, fun filled Christmas vacation at this cabin. My wife, Children and I will have great memories of this vacation.

AN IDYLLIC SETTING

  • 5 of 5
Everything about this cabin was perfect. The listing and photos were accurate. The property was very clean and incredibly comfortable. The property manager was extremely professional, thoughtful and helpful. It is only a few minutes drive from town and grocery store. The surrounding community is quiet and beautiful. We made good use of the wood burning stove, the grill out back as well as the kitchen. Honestly, we did not want to leave and are already thinking about another trip here next autumn.

So close to so many attractions. Just a few of our favorites include: Hickory Run State Park just 15 minutes away and provides wonderful hiking opportunities for all skill levels and is home to Boulder Field - a must see natural landscape of boulders created by glaciers during the Ice Age.

Penn's Peak and The Mauch Chunk Opera House are great venues for art & entertainment. Plan to catch a concert or a show during your trip or head up to Roadies Restaurant & Bar at Penn's Peak for dinner and a drink.

For the golf enthusiast, Jack Frost National Golf Club is just a short drive away and offers over 200 acres of breathtaking views and a course for all skill levels to enjoy.

We are in the Poconos, so of course there are many places the winter sports lover will enjoy. One great location is Big Boulder, part of the Jack Frost Resort area, which offers skiing, snowboarding & snow tubing.

Whitewater rafting as well as paintball fields are minutes away for those who prefer a more extreme style of vacationing. Or if you are looking for a little less excitement on your relaxing getaway, shopping and lunch are a must do in downtown Jim Thorpe!

And there is just so much more...
