About Stephen Girardin

My parents bought this property when i was 4, and all my childhood memories remain in the walls of this house. I used to live in Paris when i grew up, and we would go to this house every single weekend! After studying biology at the Pasteur Institute (Paris) for several years, I moved with my wife and our two kids to Toronto, where i do research at the University of Toronto.

Stephen Girardin purchased this cottage in 1975

Why Stephen Girardin chose Chateau-Thierry

When we bought this house in 1975, my parents fell in love with the location: so quiet, so secluded, yet so close to Paris (1h drive). The house is surrounded by rolling hills of open farmland, and the only noise you hear is birds singing!

However, when we bought the house, it was in a very rough shape. The roof was leaking and we had to change 500 square meters of roof tiles!! There was no toilet, no bathroom, no heat, and only the kitchen and a bedroom were 'livable'. After nearly 40 years of renovations, we uncovered the original gem, fully renovated 275 square meters of living space, kept the original charm of the old farmhouse, but brought comfort and high-end finish throughout.

Lovely house, wonderful part of the country

  • 5 of 5
An absolutely beautiful house, with a great (and large) kitchen, dining room with working fireplace and spacious and comfortable rooms. The house was within easy reach of Paris, by car or train, and nearby Reims and champagne country. The countryside around the house is idyllic - I would have been happy to stay for months. The house is very clean, beautifully appointed and with all the conveniences one might want, such as internet and television. The hosts left excellent guides to local sites of interest and restaurants, as well as routes for getting to the airport and to Paris. A superb vacation house, which I would recommend in the strongest terms.

An idyllic holiday

  • 5 of 5
We knew we were somewhere special the moment we pulled up in front of this beautiful, charming house set against some of the most picturesque countryside we've ever seen. The house is full of character and offers loads of space--lovely, bright bedrooms; a spacious and welcoming kitchen (which we've missed every since leaving); cozy fireplaces; plus a ping-pong table, a swing, and plenty of room for soccer playing outside, which kept our children happy. One of the most memorable aspects of the house is the outdoor stone courtyard that leads off from the kitchen, where we had delicious dinners late in the evening under summer's long sunlight. All in all, a wonderful holiday in an unforgettable spot. Thank you to Nina and René, for all of their hospitality and practical help. We certainly hope to return one day!

Wonderful home

  • 5 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here in the beautiful French countryside. The house was very spacious and well equipped. We had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay.
We loved having the different spaces outside - having the use of the bikes, the table tennis, the sun loungers and the barbecue.
We really appreciated being able to hang our washing out on a line which was undercover.
Nina, was most helpful and we enjoyed getting to know her.
Having herbs in the garden and a few raspberries and apples to use was great too.
Being ex farmers we enjoyed the busyness of the harvesting going on around us. Our two year old grand daughter loved watching all the machinery go past too - she also enjoyed going to visit the horses in a nearby paddock. The property is securely fenced so we never had a worry with escaping.
We even had a long eared barn owl (with bright orange eyes) watching over us late one afternoon.

We enjoyed visits to Reims, Epernay, Pierrefonds, Soissons, the Chateau Thierry market plus other local sights. All a pleasant drive away which was important when trying to fit in some afternoon sleeps for our grand daughter.
We all thoroughly recommend this property.

Owner's Response: Dear Lynda, we are delighted that you had an enjoyable time. Chateau-Thierry market is indeed good for local fresh products. Of note, the market of Soissons is also pleasant (every Wednesday/Saturday)...!

All good at the gite!

  • 5 of 5
We had a great time at this home. My family was met by friendly Nina and found everything as promised. It is a large country house built when Napoleon was emperor! Our gps was helpful in finding neat stuff. Some of the best was Pierrefond and Longpont. The church in Longpont was destroyed in the revolution. L'Abbaye restaurant was excellent.
The house is kid friendly and comfortable . We had all we needed. A true French country house....very private. Chateau Thierry has trains hourly to Paris .
We all had a great time. As Canadians we were grateful for our visit to Vimy Ridge where our Canadian tour guide gave us a tour in a driving rain!
Thank you!

Magnifique maison de famille à la campagne -

  • 5 of 5

French Country Living at its Finest

  • 5 of 5
Our family (me, my husband, our 12 yr-old daughter and my mother) just returned from a 2 week stay at Montmanjeon. After a long day of flying from Phoenix to Los Angeles and then onto Paris, we were pleased that Stephen’s directions to the home were so detailed and accurate. We arrived at the home and were greeted by Nina, the house manager, who is a delightful woman. She had a fire roaring in the living room fireplace and offered us coffee. The house was perfect! We loved the beautiful stone walls, the rough-hewn beams and the cozy décor of the home. Although the home is older, the modern touches made our stay so convenient. The kitchen was furnished with everything we needed and there were plenty of linens throughout.
We spent many days and evenings listening to our CDs and soaking in the beauty of the French countryside. The area is quiet and peaceful and the outdoor gardens are the perfect place to relax with a glass of champagne. Because it was our daughter’s first trip to Europe, we had a full itinerary. We visited Belleau Wood, Paris, Reims, Epernay, Soissons, Compiegne, Normandy, Belgium, Verdun and many other places. On the other hand, we enjoyed the local villages near the home such as Neuilly St. Front and La Ferte Milon (we ate lunch twice at the fabulous Les Ruines-delicious and I highly recommend!) We also spent lazy days at the home which included picnics outside and walks around the area. Our daughter loved the cows and horses.
The house is located conveniently near so many battle sites, cemeteries and monuments which were a treat for us as history buffs. The locals are so kind and helpful and made our stay wonderful. We especially enjoyed getting to know Nina and her husband Rene. Our daughter misses Nina already.
I would highly recommend this home for a family getaway. There are plenty of things to do in and around the home for people of all ages. We are already talking about going back. It was a fabulous vacation that made us fall in love with France and its people even more. Can’t wait to return.
