Nice Old Town (Vieux Nice) Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, one seriously chic space. Old Town & beach 5 mins

(NB. Our duplex renovation will be completed on Tuesday 26 May 2015. Yes, that's THIS Tuesday. New photos will be available then. The images above are from 2014.)

Our huge 102m2 (1,100 sq ft) duplex apartment in the historic port of Nice is south-facing, quiet and beautiful, yet minutes from several beaches, Old Town, tram, airport bus and train. Our top floor duplex apartment was completely renovated in 2015. It has art on the walls, great music on the iPod, plus travel apps and classic French movies on our iPad. Not forgetting three divine wooden beds with fine linen, a library of books, and every cook book known to man.

But as the apartment building dates from the 1850s (the building was once an olive oil distribution depot) heaps of antique charm remain. There are two big bedrooms with double beds; the first is really romantic and has a €3,000 Habitat mattress, antique lights and three metre high ceilings. The second bedroom is larger and boasts an antique double bed with €2,500 Tempurpedic mattress, plus a library of guidebooks, history books and an iPad 3. The third is on a separate floor and is also sublime and south-facing, with a new €2,500 mattress.

The living room opens on to the fantastically well equipped kitchen. We have a 1930s wooden table for six, Roche Bobois sofa and fireplace. More photos are available on request, just email us for more details!

About Tristan Rutherford

I am a British travel journalist based in Nice, France. I own this lovely apartment with my American wife, Kathryn. As we write for Condé Nast Traveler, National Geographic, The Sunday Times and several other travel magazines, we'd be happy to recommend a heap of charming restaurants and great beaches across the South of France.

Tristan Rutherford purchased this apartment in 2006

Why Tristan Rutherford chose Nice Old Town (Vieux Nice)

Mainly the sun! It's completely south-facing with sun from dawn until dusk pouring in. And as it's on a courtyard it's totally quiet at night, despite being in the dead centre of Nice. The location is also amazing, with an award-winning boulangerie on the corner, 100 antique stores on the same block, and the Old Town, beach and scores of restaurants within a five-minute stroll.

What makes this apartment unique

We purchased an iPad in 2012 for our guests to use. It is pre-loaded with some great French movies, travel apps, video games and lots of cool links. We love playing with it, and hope you do too! The fireplace is unique and very cozy in winter, as is the library, cook books, kitchen and dining table for six. We love entertaining, eating and drinking and expect that our guests will too. What's totally unique is the peace and quiet at night, very rare in Nice, plus the personal, French, traditional and very chic decoration that makes it so special. Our final renovation in 2014 turning our much-loved apartment into three bedroom duplex. There is so much space it's untrue!

Wonderful, homey apartment in Nice

  • 5 of 5

Tristan and Kathryn keep a wonderful apartment in Nice.

It's great to be so close to everything, smack between Garibaldi Sq and the port, a hop-skip-jump from the beach (lovely walk actually), and old Nice. Yet they're removed and living among the locals rather than a bazillion tourists. There's a lush green park across the street and a good vertical stroll up the steep hill leads to a great place to pass an afternoon surrounded by ruins and breathtaking overlooks. The local bus to the airport, Cannes, Ez, Monaco (etc) is also right on the port a few blocks away.

The place itself is very homey, comfortable and tasteful in a simple way. You're in someone's lived-in home rather than their co-op/hotel suite.

Sweet, accomodating, trustworthy people. They're gifted travel writers (see their Frommer's guide to France), so they really "get it".

Payment smooth.

All good.

We'll be back.

Owner's Response: Hi Seamus and friends, your words are magical, thank you. So glad you enjoyed your two week stay at our place in Nice from your home in New York. We have direct flights to your city of course, as we do from Montreal, Toronto, Moscow, Dubai and Doha and across Europe. Please come back soon! Our thorough renovation is taking place in late 2014. After that we'll have a third bedroom, nicer kitchen and second bathroom. But we'll keep all the charm of the place intact. The apartment dates from 1850 - when Lincoln was President - so we need to mix antique chic with modern style. Guests all comment on our new mattresses, great kitchen, cook books, iPad, iPod dock etc. We're glad it was comfortable enough for your party. See you again soon! Tristan

A Real Gem

Great location 2 minutes from the Port and from Place Garibaldi. The apartment is on the third floor of a lovely building in a quiet side street and is full of character but somehow doesn't feel cramped or touristy. We've stayed in the old town before and found it airless, claustrophobic and impossible to get any sleep but this place is large, open and airy even in the 30 degree heat when we were there. It's got loads of charm and character but is bang up to date where it matters with a fantastic and enormous new bathroom, stupendous shower, great comfortable beds, wifi etc. The booking process via Tristan, and the welcome from Marilia, were both really efficient but everything is done with that fantastic personal touch which just makes you feel that these are very nice people who are actually bothered about you and want you to have a great time! Have to say we also had a fabulous meal just round the corner in the Port at Le Passe-plat for not much more than we paid in the old town for some bog standard pizza. Anyway, if you like huge, bland, anonymous apartment blocks with matching balconies then maybe this apartment isn't for you but we absolutely adored it and it will be our first port of call next time we're in Nice.

Owner's Response: Dear Kate and family, What a pleasure it is to read your excellent feedback. You're right: the port is a two minute walk from the Old Town at Place Garibaldi, yet it quieter, calmer, less expensive and more sophisticated in every way. I'm glad your two grown up children also enjoyed the apartment. We have 50 restaurants within a 5 minutes walk. But the Passe-Plat is brand new - rest assured I'll visit when I return to Nice next week! We are also renovating the apartment for 2015, as we did for 2011. That means two extra bedrooms upstairs, a new kitchen, new parquet floors and lots more space and light. We won't take away any of the apartment's charm. We simply hope you come back and see it in 2015. Best wishes, Tristan

Excellent choice for families travelling without a car

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is spacious, cozy, not noisy and easy to relax in. We went there in July 2014. A good choice for families. The combination of very old and newish interior create a very friendly atmosphere. Meet & greet went very smoothly.

During our stay we had breakfast and dinner at the apartment most of the days. We listened to jazz-music and Billy Joel on the Ipod. The afternoons we spent on the beach or in the old town just a few minutes walk from the bloc. One day we had a little excursion to Antibes and Vence also. We went their by means of public transportation which worked alright. The info we got from the brochures and books available in the apartment that also have plenty of interesting books.

We strongly recommend this rental to other families with small kids that are looking for a vacation in a safe and pleasant environment and close to the seaside and attractions.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much Mads Peter. Your family is more than welcome to stay at our three bedroom apartment next year. It will still be sunny! You're right - you don't really need a car to explore the French Riviera. France's socialist public transport system is arguably the best in the world. Buses to Monaco, Eze and Villefranche leave 100m from our front door. Trains to Cannes and Antibes via the tram, 100m away. There's even a boat to Corsica and St Tropez (Also 100m away). Glad you enjoyed the books. Don't be afraid to take them to the beach - the apartment is there for you. See you next year! Tristan and Kathryn

Home away from home

Family with two teenage daughters spent a week in July 2014 at this wonderful apartment. The apartment is cosy and bright and feels like you are staying at a friends apartment as opposed to a rental property. The apartment is quiet. The bathroom is new with a large Canadian style shower. The beds are super comfortable and rooms have great fans. Given sea breeze no need for air conditioning. The apartment is well equipped for cooking and is stocked with great books and information on things to do while on French Riveria. The location is great - a 5 minute walk to the port with great restaurants around. On nearby rue Cassini you will find a bakery and several grocery stores. Rue Cassini leads to place Garibaldi - with lots of restaurants and this leads either to the Vieux Nice or to promenade du Paillon - a green space which also leads to place Massena and major shopping on Rue Jean Medecin. The tramway is available at Place Garibaldi and in 2016 a new station will be even closer to apartment. Promenade des Anglais is a 10 minute walk the other way. So all this to say, the apartment is greatly situated and a great base for exploring Nice and the Riveria, and is highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Hi Philip and family, what a kind message. I'm happy to see you used Nice as a base. Those trips to St Tropez, Monaco, Antibes and Cannes by boat, bus and train sounded like fun! Our tram is one minute walk away, as is the bus and the boat to St Tropez. The new park on the doorstep, the 1km-long Promenade du Paillon, is such a bonus. Great for kids, botanists and picnickers. Nice city council spend a lot of taxes! In 2017 another new tramway arrives - directly to Nice Airport. Our guests should be even happier then. Please come back next year. Kind regards, Tristan

My Nice home away from home !

  • 5 of 5

Where do I begin! From the very first moment with out friendly greet by Marillia, to the welcome gift left by our hosts, to the discovery of the fantastic apartment, everything about the Antoint Gauthier rental was perfect.

The sunny, cozy, spacious, well-decorated and very functional space was perfect for my friend and I to spend a week discovering Nice with all that it has to offer. The free Wifi with IPad and IPod (that we had on shuffle for the whole week, nice selection of music by the way!) are a really nice touch to help us stay connected with loved ones!

Walking distance from almost everything there is to see, the Antione Gauthier apartment is ideal for people like me, who love to discover a city by wandering though the streets and relaxing on a terrace somewhere. Also, the great user’s guide written by the owners was very useful with tips on the city and great nearby places to eat!

I enjoyed everything about this place and would not hesitate one minute to rent it again for a future trip to Nice.

Owner's Response: Dear Hélène and Catherine, We are so glad you loved Nice. And our apartment too! We stay in many apartments ourselves and the best ones offer a bottle of wine, olives and snacks on arrival to make guests feel at home. We are glad we do too! The superfast WiFi, iPad and iPod are big hits. Glad you took advantage of them. They are so useful for checking the weather, reading local blogs, rearranging flights, downloading movies on iTunes. Again, enjoy it! We walked around Nice Port this lunchtime. We shopped in three organic supermarkets, watched a live band, brought some baguettes and ate great sushi. Hopefully our collection of brand new guidebooks let our guests have the same experience. Please come back soon. You are most welcome. Tristan and Kathryn
