SUNNY AND CHIC IN NICE. IPAD3, FINE LINEN, WIFI, SOUTH-FACING & LIBRARY

Nice Old Town (Vieux Nice) Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Our huge 75m2 (800 sq ft) apartment in the historic port of Nice is south-facing, quiet and beautiful, yet minutes from several beaches, Old Town, tram, airport bus and train. Our top floor apartment has a lovely feel; it has art on the walls, great music on the iPod dock, travel apps and classic French movies on our iPad 3, two divine wooden beds with fine linen, and a vast library of books.

The apartment dates from the 1850s when the building was an olive oil distribution deport and associated offices (the original floor tiles remain). It's very charming. There are two big bedrooms with double beds; the first is really romantic and has a €3,000 Habitat mattress, antique lights and four metre high ceilings. The second bedroom is larger and boasts an antique double bed with €2,500 Tempurpedic mattress, plus a library of guidebooks, history books and an iPad 3.

The living room opens on to the fantastically well equipped kitchen. We have a 1930s wooden table for eight, Roche Bobois sofa and fireplace. More photos are available on request, just email us for more details!

I am a British travel journalist based in Nice, France. I own this lovely apartment with my American wife, Kathryn. As we write for Condé Nast Traveler, National Geographic, the Sunday Times and several other travel magazines, we'd be happy to recommend a heap of charming restaurants and great beaches across the South of France.

Tristan Rutherford purchased this apartment in 2006

Mainly the sun! It's completely south-facing with sun from dawn until dusk pouring in. And as it's on a courtyard it's totally quiet at night, despite being in the dead centre of Nice. The location is also amazing, with an award-winning boulangerie on the corner, 100 antique stores on the same block, and the Old Town, beach and scores of restaurants within a five-minute stroll.

We purchased an iPad 3 in 2012 for our guests to use. It is pre-loaded with some great French movies, travel apps, video games and lots of cool links. We love playing with it, and hope you do too! The fireplace is unique and very cozy in winter, as is the library, cook books, kitchen and dining table for six. We love entertaining, eating and drinking and expect that our guests will too. What's totally unique is the peace and quiet at night, very rare in Nice, plus the personal, French, traditional and very chic decoration that makes it so special. The apartment was freshly renovated and painted with a new shower room installed in 2013.

MY NICE HOME AWAY FROM HOME !

  • 5 of 5
Where do I begin! From the very first moment with out friendly greet by Marillia, to the welcome gift left by our hosts, to the discovery of the fantastic apartment, everything about the Antoint Gauthier rental was perfect.

The sunny, cozy, spacious, well-decorated and very functional space was perfect for my friend and I to spend a week discovering Nice with all that it has to offer. The free Wifi with IPad and IPod (that we had on shuffle for the whole week, nice selection of music by the way!) are a really nice touch to help us stay connected with loved ones!

Walking distance from almost everything there is to see, the Antione Gauthier apartment is ideal for people like me, who love to discover a city by wandering though the streets and relaxing on a terrace somewhere. Also, the great user’s guide written by the owners was very useful with tips on the city and great nearby places to eat!

I enjoyed everything about this place and would not hesitate one minute to rent it again for a future trip to Nice.

Owner's Response: Dear Hélène and Catherine,

We are so glad you loved Nice. And our apartment too! We stay in many apartments ourselves and the best ones offer a bottle of wine, olives and snacks on arrival to make guests feel at home. We are glad we do too!

The superfast WiFi, iPad and iPod are big hits. Glad you took advantage of them. They are so useful for checking the weather, reading local blogs, rearranging flights, downloading movies on iTunes. Again, enjoy it!

We walked around Nice Port this lunchtime. We shopped in three organic supermarkets, watched a live band, brought some baguettes and ate great sushi. Hopefully our collection of brand new guidebooks let our guests have the same experience.

Please come back soon. You are most welcome. Tristan and Kathryn

LE, 4,RUE ANTOINE GAUTHIER,NE PAS HÉSITER À LE CHOISIR !

HEAVEN IN NICE

  • 5 of 5
When you first enter this wonderful apartment, you immediately feel at home. It's warm and cosy, and there is an incredibly calm, peaceful and positive atmosphere. The big windows let the light in and gives you great energy. The location is amazing too, we walked to the marina and the beach in 5 minutes, as well as to the old town. There are shops all around and you can buy very fine french food in all these little authentic food stores and that's really rare nowadays to be able to find places that managed to keep things as they use to be (Old cheese shops, fresh fruits/vegetables, refine wines, artisanal breads and deserts...). The neighbors were adorable and that was also very important to us. The bed was very comfortable and I totally fell in love with the shower, clean, wide and modern, (the furniture beneath the sinks is absolutely fantastically restored!). We had so much pleasure cooking in the very well equipped new kitchen, which opened on to the living room, with a nice bar-like table in between. We didn't have to buy any guides of any sort cause they have a huge collection of books on Nice and France in general, with maps, tips and tricks.
I was expecting to be in a great house, I wasn't disappointed at all!
Thank you for everything, Nice was magical, and your apartment played a key role in that!

Owner's Response: Thank you Céline. You are certainly welcome to come again! The shower room is totally new for 2013. It has a heated floor, antique dresser and massive open shower. I could spend all day in there!

Staying in a rented apartment also works out cheaper than staying in a hotel for a week. And it's much larger and more luxurious too. The books we have on Provence (guidebooks, history books about Queen Victoria's visits, maps, culinary guides) offer another angle to this amazing city on the sea.

The sun will still shine on Nice in 2014. Why not come back then?!

LOVELY WEEK IN NICE

  • 5 of 5
We loved the place! The location is ideal, in the old city and 50 meters from the harbour. I got all the information I needed before coming and it was very convenient to come from the airport (busstop from the airport 100 m from the flat). In the vicinity there is everything which made the stay enjoyable from practicalities (supermarket, french bakeries, cafés) to enjoyment places (cinemas, squares with Italian architecture, lovely restaurants). The flat was extremely well described on the site and corresponded to our expectations. 3 rooms, including a large living room with a chimney. We felt straight away at home in these rooms with a Mediterranean touch in it. The bathroom has been renovated recently and is beautiful. Finally the weather was more than we could expect: 22 degrees in November, sunny, so we even had some days on the beach! Even in the evening we could sit on the terrasse at the restaurants. Great stay, great place. A source of energy for us. Finally one advice: go to Garibaldi square one evening and try the oysters and a glass of Muscadet wine at Cafe de Turin: an experience, even for "oyster-scepticals"!

Owner's Response: Thank you Samuel, what a kind review. We love the oysters at Café de Turin. It's been there for 100 years, so it must be good! The apartment has a Mediterranean feel thanks to our art, books, recipe guides and kitchen. It's also south-facing and filled with sunshine, which makes it feel so like you are living the French dream.

It sounds like you had a sunny time in November. We're so glad. It's December now and I've been swimming - but not for long! Nice gets 300 days of sun per year, and our guests seem to love it.

Hope you book again soon, you are so welcome, Tristan

VERY NICE EXPERIENCE

  • 5 of 5
The apartment suited us fine. The welcoming gifts were a nice touch. Also the Ipad. We enjoyed 'happy hours' in the nearby Place Garibaldi; also visiting Monaco by bus; taking the 'train des pignes' into the mountains; and the hop-on, hop-off bus around Nice, strolling the Promenade des Anglais and much else. The location of the apartment is convenient, being just that little bit away from the main tourist areas made us feel we were living an authentic local existence.
Marilla, who handles the changeovers and cleaning, was very helpful to us when we had a problem with a car we'd hired for the day of departure: she made calls for assistance on our behalf and the problem was resolved. That was a good ending to our very Nice experience.

Owner's Response: Dear Frank and family,

So glad you had a great stay! I work in Monaco several weeks each year. What a commute along the coastline on the 100 bus route! The Train des Pignes into the hills is adorable too. It still connects local communities who speak all sorts of different dialects. We're so proud of Marilia. To have a trilingual housekeeper on hand to assist our guests is like gold dust.

Please come back! Best wishes, Tristan and Kathryn

PEACEFUL RETREAT NEAR THE PORT

  • 5 of 5
We travel to Nice frequently and have always stayed in Vieux Nice. This time, because we were traveling with our family, we needed more space. This apartment fit our needs perfectly! Even with two couples, a five-year-old, and a baby, we were able to spread out. We loved getting to know the port a bit better, and to spend time hiking through the Colline du Château, in addition to many hours at the beach, wandering through the streets of the old town and the Cours Saleya. If you value opportunities for exercise, there are plenty here, with the Promenade (we brought fold-up scooters and bicycles), swimming in the sea, and climbing the 64 steps up to the apartment, which we greatly appreciated.
The owners understand the needs of travelers and have made their home a comfortable, well-equipped place to land. The various sleeping needs of our group were well accommodated. A beach umbrella, fins, and pads were available, as were yoga mats. We appreciated the kitchen, for the convenience of frequently dining-in with small children. When in Nice, we always have at least one meal at Oliviera, where Nadim and Rajine always make their guests feel welcome.
We loved the boulangerie that is close to the apartment - brioche and pain au chocolat became a part of our morning routine! Though we didn't go there this time, the Zucca Magica, a vegetarian restaurant, is very close. The food is amazing and plentiful, and so we usually prefer to go at lunch so as to be able to breathe again by day's end!
The owners as well as the cleaning crew were incredibly helpful. We appreciated all of their correspondence and care before, during, and after our stay.

Owner's Response: Dear Mary and family, thanks for your kind words. At 75m2 the apartment is ultra spacious - we're glad you had a fabulous time. The yoga mats and snorkelling gear make a welcome diversion away from the restaurants of Nice - a little healthier too!

We are very proud of our kitchen. Some guests prefer to eat in the port (30 restaurants just two minutes away) or in the Old Town (eight minutes away) ever night. But if you do visit our local markets, boulangeries and traiteur that's all part of the local magic! Come back soon, Tristan
