Born and raised on the island of Oahu, we found ourselves on the mainland for many years and reminisced about childhood memories of discovering life in tide pools at our family's beach cottage. After a 10 year search we found a home--the Makaha Pole House--where we can create memories with our children. We love the unspoiled beauty of Makaha and the time we spend watching the waves, seeing dolphins and whales, and enjoying the cooling tradewinds. Simply put, we love Hawaii and Makaha and hope you will love your visit to the Makaha Pole House!
Pat White purchased this house in 2012
Why Makaha you might ask, because Makaha is a place where time stood still. I can still sit out on the deck chairs, early in the morning and watch fishermen with hand thrown nets waiting for fish to swim by and catch. Where spinner dolphins still entertain you, right in front of your eyes or the warm sun setting in full color from your deck chair.
That is why we waited patiently for the right place to come along.
Makaha Pole House is our home. It is where our kids can enjoy the beauty of rediscovering the old tide pools, catch waves on a boogie board or enjoy the spectacular sunsets with ohana (family). The lanai (deck) is where we (and you will) spend most of your time. Pictures can not capture the beauty of the view or the sound of the waves on the coral reef. When you arrive you will walk in the furnished comfortable house (say 'wow') and head to the lanai to watch the waves and look for dolphins and whales. You know that you are staying in paradise!

We enjoyed everything about the house. This was the fourth house we stayed in and everyone agreed that it was the nicest one. Several times I asked my in-laws if they wanted to go to the beach and everyone said: "Why? We have everything we need right here." The only complaint I heard was that my mother-in-law found the deck too distracting to read her book because she kept having to watch the waves instead of read :)
We did not mind the rain - in fact it was nice to cool off a bit because we're not used to the heat!
This house and location are amazing. The pictures online do not do it justice. Beautiful ocean views in 180 degrees visible from the vaulted ceiling living room, dining area and kitchen, as well as the lanai deck and front ocean side yard. The waves break right in front of the house and are memorizing to view. There are great beaches nearby, but we rarely wanted to leave the house. We spent most of the week on the large covered lanai deck. We saw whales breeching and flapping daily. It was well stocked with all amenities for an easy and comfortable stay. The owner, Pat, is timely and thorough with responses. We highly recommend this house and would love to go back again!
Breathtaking doesn't even begin to describe the house and the views from the lanai. As another reviewer said, don't get too comfortable on the lanai or you will spend your entire vacation there listening to the sounds of the ocean and watching all of the whales cruise by! The house is in pristine condition, equipped with everything you need. We absolutely loved the location of the house - completely different from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu and Waikiki.
Pat and Dan, the owners, are the kindest people you could hope to meet. They have lots of great recommendations, and we appreciated their tips on restaurants, great beaches, and other activities. We also had the pleasure of meeting their caretaker, Bruce, who is just lovely as well (and was in the January 2015 issue of National Geographic in an article that featured Makaha!).
Makaha Beach is an absolute gem, and if you are into scuba diving, there is a wonderful dive shop about a mile away (Patrick's Diving). The diving on the west side of Oahu is so much better than the south side, and we loved having the dive shop so close. Also, if you enjoy massages, we found a great person who came to the house, and we had our massages on the lanai while listening to the waves. What a wonderful experience!
If you want to experience the local, chill side of Oahu, you will love the house and location. We are already planning our next trip. Thank you so much, Pat and Dan, for everything - we will be back!
The property was very well maintained and the house was amazing, clean, and beautiful! We could have sat on the deck and watched the waves our whole vacation. It felt private. Was easy to find just plugged address into phone gps and drove straight to it! Pat and Dan called to check on us to see if we needed anything which I thought was pretty cool! We bought groceries at a grocery store about 2 miles away and the house had everything we needed to cook with. It was nice to have a washer and dryer so u could pack lighter and wash clothes so more room for gifts in suit case. Plus no laundry to do when back home! :-) we would definately recomend this house to anyone and hope to get the chance to go back again someday!

Lulled by the surf in a comfortable bed, my husband and I had some of the best sleeps, ever, on a trip. If you have something you REALLY want to do, better do it before you get comfortable on the lanai! We ate there, visited, napped, took pictures, and tried to read, but watching the ocean was more exciting!
We enjoyed two wonderful weeks at the Pole House. Perfect location for a relaxing stay, very quiet. We saw Whales every day for 14 days. Spinner Dolphins travelled back and forth right in front of the property daily. It was fun walking through the tide pools exploring the shore line with our granddaughter. With Makaha Beach only a short walk away it was perfect. The amenities and the layout is exactly as described, with lots of dishes, pots and pans. Loved the large wrap around lanai, what a great place to have your meals.
Pat phoned the house the first morning to welcome us to Hawaii and to make sure everything was ok. We would recommend this property to anyone that enjoys being close to the Ocean and only minutes away from the beach.
My family and I spent 7 wonderful days here. The view was unbelievable and the sunsets were awesome. We couldn't have asked for a better stay. The property was better than depicted, and owner (Pat) really tried to make sure everything was perfect.
The house has everything you need. Buy your groceries in town and enjoying cooking and relaxing at this ocean front home. It is a very special place and our only regret is we couldn't stay longer.
Makaha Beach is Oahu's second most popular snorkeling site. The clear, aqua blue water with little current is superb for snorkeling in summer. There are underwater caverns, arches, and tunnels as deep as 40 feet. Sea life includes schools of taape, octopuses, several species of eels, green sea turtles, transiting dolphins, and sometimes manta and eagle rays.
Across from Makaha State Beach, is a Souvenir and Ocean sports equipment shop, where you can either purchase or rent various equipment to enjoy ocean sports.
One of the nicest, most peaceful and calm beaches in the area, both summer and winter, is called Waianae Beach at Pokai Bay. Located on this beach is the Recreation Area and the Waianae Beach Resort for the Military. It is located about 5 minutes from the house by car going south, just after passing Seven Eleven, and turning right on Army Street. Park on the street, and bring photo ID to pass the Security Gate. The Waianae Beach Club offers great food, and a fantastic ocean view from the dining lanai. The Club restaurant has restricted times of service. Kayaks, boats, and other beach accessories can be rented right there on the beach. A small store is conveniently located on the beach, stocked with all necessities for an enjoyable time at the beach. Visit the Disney Resort at Koolina, which is located about 20 minutes south of the property.
For a round of golf or a brunch, check out the Makaha Resort and Golf Club, which is just 5 minutes from the house. www.makaharesort.net
