The sights and sounds of wildlife, open-air tropical living and unforgettable views have all been captured in one special place...Flying Toucans.

This luxurious Costa Rican Villa is situated on a picturesque point on the southern Pacific Coast. With lots of surrounding jungle, you have all the privacy needed to enjoy your home in peace...with the exception of some noisy visitors. Yes, the Howler monkeys and the toucans can sound off at any time without first introducing themselves.

Superbly located in Costa Rica's Maritime Zone (within 200 meters of the shore), Flying Toucans is one of the very few luxury home rentals in the area that is on the ocean side of the main coastal road. This unique location combines breathtaking views of jungle-clad mountains, palm tree-studded beaches, and the tranquil Pacific Ocean with quick and convenient access all year long.

Additional Information : If you like beaches, you are in luck as we have an abundance nearby. From the villa, take a short hike down to the point and discover two secluded beaches (one with its own 35' waterfall) or jump in your car and within two minutes be exploring miles of footstep-free sand.

The living and dining rooms offer the romance of open-air tropical living, blending the comforts of home with the nearness of wildlife. The living room is a great central location to gather and enjoy all that Flying Toucans has to offer. Plenty of seating for everyone. Don't be surprised if a hummingbird or butterfly cruises through making a cameo appearance. The 'formal' dining area, adjoining the living room, accommodates six.

The large fully-equipped kitchen, with its' beautiful custom cabinetry, and casual eating area for up to six is integrated with the living room and the views beyond. Whip up a smoothie or a six course meal...your choice.

Additional Information : Once in, you'll never want to get out of the infinity-edge pool. Just three steps from the villa, it blends into the dazzling coastline and the popular Uvita 'Whale's Tail', a unique place to walk and explore. It overlooks Ballena (which means 'whale') National Marine Park so keep your eyes open for Humpback whales and Bottle-Nosed dolphins.

There is a half bath downstairs as well as a laundry room with full-sized washer and dryer.

Two well-furnished master suites are located upstairs. (King bed in one, Queen and Double in other). Each of the suites incorporates the use of precious hardwoods for the doors and vaulted ceilings. Relax in the comfort of air conditioning or open the windows and let the ocean breezes in. Too comfortable to get out of bed? Fine, enjoy the views from your pillow... now if you could just get someone to bring you breakfast!

Spacious bathrooms feature tumbled Colombian limestone showers and an openness that continues to let the outdoors in while providing all the privacy needed.

Additional : You will love taking advantage of the spacious terrace upstairs. It's perfect for wildlife viewing, whale watching, stargazing, photography, sunrises and sunsets, or just dozing off in the comfy hammock. Surrounding the villa are exotic heliconias, a variety of fragrant gingers, exotic palms, birds-of-paradise, fruit trees etc... not only for your enjoyment but to attract our fine feathered friends. Been looking a long time for something really special? Eureka, you've found it. We look forward to having you as guest at....Flying Toucans... it's unforgettable!

About John and Mary Reilly

e

Greetings from Flying Toucans! We first visited Costa Rica in November of 1998 on our honeymoon. Having both lived on Maui for many years and traveled extensively internationally, we were interested in a new adventure and a memorable challenge. We had read about the country for several years prior to our visit and it sounded as though Costa Rica fit all of our criteria. After exploring the various regions of the country, meeting the people and having a delightful time we knew we were destined to relocate. As it happened, on this first trip, we discovered this one-of-a-kind property and purchased it. This set in motion our plans of eventually relocating. After more preparation, we made the move and actually lived in a tent on the property for several months while designing Flying Toucans. This allowed us to understand how best to showcase the awesome views and the wildlife while combining luxury with tropical living. Now that Flying Toucans has become a reality, we offer to share it with you. With years of experience in the luxury tourism industry, we believe we have created a beautiful place for you to call home while you embark on your own adventures. If you have been looking and looking for that special destination you will never forget, you've found it! Hope to see you here soon, :) John and Mary Reilly

Nearest Airport : Quepos at 30 Miles
Nearest Beach : beach at 200 Metres
Car: recommended

The area between Dominical and Uvita on the southern Pacific coast is famous for its striking landscape where the mountains come right down to the water. Not subject to the north's dry, dusty season during the months of December to April, visitors to the Dominical region will enjoy the year-round greenery and lushness of jungles and forests.

While the rural airport in Quepos (30 minutes north of Flying Toucans) may be used, many guests choose to begin their adventure from the main international airport in San Jose (SJO) thus allowing them to see the varied landscape on the way down. The drive down to the villa is 3 hours, not including how many times you stop to take in the awesome views en route. Flying Toucans is six miles south of Dominical on a perfect road. If you can ever pull yourself away from the villa and view you will find abundant choices of dining, shopping, and activities close by.

Other Activities: Ziplines, nature treks, kayaking tours

Golf: Besides the new golf course there's LOTS to do around here: Bird and animal watching, surfing, swimming, beach-combing, hiking, horseback tours to beaches and waterfalls, zip lines, day trips to Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park, butterfly farm, serpentaria (snake exhibition), ultra-light flightseeing tours, fishing.

About an hour north of us is Quepos (Manuel Antonio National Park). The casual village of Dominical offers international and local style dining, a bank/ATM, a bakery, small grocery stores, an English-speaking doctor and dentist, pharmacy, real estate offices, souvenir shops, internet cafe, surfboard rentals and visitor information and booking services for local activities. A 2-minute walk from the villa is a small and beautiful European hotel with fine dining and full spa services. The villages of Uvita and Bahia, 6 miles south, offer internet, shops, restaurants, beaches, boat tours, a butterfly farm and the lovely Ballena National Park, home of the 'Whale Tail' (as is seen from Flying Toucans). Obviously absent from our corner of the world are large numbers of tourists, suits/ties/pantyhose and traffic lights... come see for yourself!

Perfection

Wow. I can't even imagine how this could have been better. We stayed for two full weeks and wish we could haved stayed for the rest of our lives.

It's truly hard to even leave the property. It has it all. We saw more wildlife on the property than we saw anywhere else. Adult sloth in the back yard, baby sloth in the front. Toucans and monkeys every day. Hummingbirds, lizards, macaws, butterflies, iguana, crabs, all kinds of birds, even the insects were interesting.

The property managers were great and very helpful with suggestions. Also a lot of information available when you get there by reading the guest books and the binder that includes some lovely maps.

What fun taking a shower with the windows open and looking out to see a monkey, toucan, and sloth all watching you!

Dominical and Uvita are both close, good grocery stores in Uvita. The local fruit is heavenly. There is a fresh fish stand next to La Macha and we got some shrimp and took advantage of the wonderful kitchen and cooked at home many nights.

I could go on and on but I guess I'll stop. If you're considering this place, book it.

There may be other places that are just as beautiful as Flying Toucans but when combined with the constant parade of wildlife and the quiet and peaceful setting, we think it is unbeatable. We have read, and wholeheartedly agree, with all the other positive comments from past guests. Our stay was for the Month of February, 2013.

Perfection in every way....

We had been dreaming of coming here for a long time and all our expectations were surpassed. The beauty and tranquility of Flying Toucans was just what we needed to de-stress and relax. We didn't do a lot beyond sitting in the sun and enjoying the pool (which was sublime with a view beyond your imagination). The house is out of the way and secluded, but we felt very safe. Every amenity you could want is here. The kitchen is both huge and modern (with full size fridge, microwave, dishwasher, and all the cookware you need) and looks out into the open-air living room and pool. The living room area has plenty of seating and is quite comfortable. Everything here is done in a classy way. The bedrooms have fans, and BEAUTIFUL bathrooms with showers that open to the lush jungle. The master bedroom had a very comfortable bed and a TV for watching one of the many DVD's provided. The second floor terrace is HUGE and has a wonderful double hammock for afternoon naps. While this home is gorgeous and pristine, you won't believe the wildlife that surrounds you. Howler monkeys, a sloth family that lives in the tree right off the master bath, white-faced monkeys, AMAZING toucans, hummingbirds, dragonflies, lizards, crabs, are just some of the wild life you will see. If you decide to spend any time away from the villa you will find the charming and fun surfing village, Dominical, just a few minutes away. Some fun bars and shops, even a lovely Catholic Church we attended can be accessed easily. Watching the surfers from the bar/restuarant Tortilla Flats was fun and the locals are always entertaining with their crazy stories. You must, must have dinner at least once at a fabulous place called Exotica in Ojochal. The food is so sumptuous and the husband-wife-chef-hostess offer a great place for romance or family fun. If you like horseback riding don't miss Nauyaca Falls Riding trip. Really fun. We loved FT so much we are coming back for our honeymoon in April!

Exotic Dream Vacation!

We (Husband/Wife with 5 year old) stayed at Flying Toucans over Christmas 2012. It was a vacation like no other that we had experienced before. The wildlife was the most memorable (monkeys and toucans). We only left the house once a day and usually for a short periord of time. Nate, the 5 year old, preferred never to leave. The attention to detail was impressive. Everything for every day living was there which was very different from other houses that we have rented. Costa Rica in general requires that you are adventureous by nature. The time share/ all inclusive crowd need not apply. Driving is sketchy from American standards and there is a lack of signs. We found the driving fun though. The other reviews discuss many things that we concur with. We had fun driving to San Isidro and experiencing what regular Costa Ricans do. Playa Hermosa was nice and drive up ceviche was good and cheap. Fishing and snorkeling with captain Isidro was a highlight. Daryl, the manager, was an irreplaceable resource and completes the deal.

Our family's 3rd visit to Flying Toucans

Our family's 3rd visit to Flying Toucans
5 of 5
Submitted: January 3, 2013 Stayed: December 2012
At this writing my family is enjoying our 3rd visit to Flying Toucans. If you never leave the villa while visiting, that would be just fine.

Yesterday was a good animal spotting day and we never left the villa. In the morning a troupe of howler monkeys made their appearance and hung out with us for most of the day. Later white-faced monkeys visited us. A mated pair of toucans has been with us since our arrival. On our previous two visits we heard about the sloth that frequents Flying Toucans but never saw him. Yesterday he arrived and is still with us today.

Flying Toucans is literally minutes from dozens of beaches. Yesterday we walked the "Whale Tail" when at low tide the beach appears and look just like a whale tail. We invested a couple of hours looking at ocean creatures left behind in the tidal pools. Today we are off to Hermosa Beach with great waves for swimming and body surfing. We also want to return to Parque Marino Balleno when at low tide you can climb over the mountain to Playa de Arco, which is very remote with dramatic cliffs.

On this trip we went white water rafting for our first time on the Rio Coto Brus, which was a lot of fun. Every year we ride the horses at Don Lulu's where you ride into the jungle to a waterfall and for the brave, can climb the waterfall (with assistance) and dive into a pool below. Tico breakfast riding in and lunch riding out. In other years we've ridden ATVs, zip-lined, etc. Lots to do here.

The local Tico restaurants are called "Sodas" and are ran as an extension of a local’s home and staffed by family. Sodas are quite common where we enjoy "casados" which in Spanish means "to marry" which means they marry a great piece of fresh fish (or pork or steak) with a nice salad then with beans and rice for $6-7. Great food and very safe to eat.

2008 was our first visit to Flying Toucans, which was a great adventure and something we though was behind us. Then in 2009 we couldn't stand the thought of not going again so we booked ourselves back to Flying Toucans. With our kids now in college, a few years passed and we thought a 2012 visit might be one of the last family vacations before they started their own families so we are back again.

Daryl and Donna, who manage Flying Toucans, have become familiar faces and always helpful with any questions or plans that you would like to make while at Flying Toucans.

Something tells me we will return!
