ELEGENT-WATERFRONT:'THE OLD RIVER HOUSE'-IN TOWN, ON RIVER

Kennebunkport Estate Rental Photos and Description

Estate, 10 Bedrooms, 4 Baths (Sleeps 17)

Old world elegance. Built in 1848, this fully restored, approximately 7500 sq ft. (entire house including 'The Old Rigging Loft') sits just 0.2 of a mile from the beautiful Dock Square, Kennebunkport. Located on the world famous Ocean Avenue, this house has 10 bedrooms, each with their own sink, 4 baths and two fireplaces.

The 'Old River House', sits on the Kennebunk River next to the Arundel Yacht Club. Two public parks sit in front of and along side the house.

'The Old River House,' and 'The Old Rigging Loft' are nestled among the many old Captain's Mansions of the 18th Century. An almost $800,000 renovation in 2010 brings this grand old Captain's mansion back to its original grandeur. Antiques throughout the many rooms and the frequent passing of the Kennebunkport horse drawn carriage brings one back to that slower, more quaint part of American history. Morning coffee and evening drinks on the porch are just perfect for watching the river boat traffic and the children taking sailboat lessons at the 'Arundel Yacht Club' next door.

'The Old Rigging loft', according to historical data, was one of the more popular 'Riggers' for the 'Clipper Ships' built in Kennebunkport during her heyday as one of Americas largest builders of Clipper Sail Boats. Today, 'The Old Rigging Loft' is now, a separate apartment, with a Care-taker (seasonal), for the convenience and comfort of 'Old River House' Guests.

If you don't walk to town for the many award winning restaurants for lobster, scallops, fried clams, fresh fish, oysters, hand-churned ice cream, or home-made chocolate, you have a fully renovated (2010) Kitchen with Top of the line 'Medallion Cabinets' and rare and unique 'Blue-sparkle South African Granite Tops'(only place in the world that produces Blue Granite). New GE Profile, and Amana Appliances can help make you the families best chef when you cook fresh seafood from, 'Port Lobster Pound' right down the road on Ocean Ave, next to the famous 'Mables Restaurant.'

There are four stair cases, and three levels of living space. New rugs, new bed mattresses, new curtains, new furniture, custom gardening, and an on-site Care-taker (in the seperate 'Rigging Loft' apartment), make your stay one of relaxed elegance, and comfort.

Inkeepers, Scott and Cheryl Mahoney have 8 wonderful children from 25 down to 5. 5 boys and 3 girls means they are very busy all the time. They have been married 27 years. Scott grew up in Lexington, Ma, and Cheryl in Farmington, CT. Scott moved to South Glastonbury, CT at age 8 and meet Cheryl at a 'Mixer' (dance) Senior year at her private school. Cheryl became best friends with Scotts mother (Gloria), so when they broke up, Scott would come home and hear Cheryl laughing with Gloria, her best friend. Cheryl, a year behind Scott, transferred to Scotts College, Fairleigh Dickinson University (NJ) . They went out with other people, grew up, and realized that they should be together and 27 years later, they still are. They have lived in Atlanta for 20 years. Scotts brother, Chris, worked at the Colony Hotel as a Busboy during College. Scott worked at the grand old 'Marshall House' in York Harbor, Me as an Elevator Boy one summer, and as a Bellman the next summer. The Marshal House was been torn down several decades ago. The Mahoneys vacationed here and in York Harbor, Me. Cheryl vacationed at her familys vacation home in Old Saybrook, CT.

Scott Mahoney purchased this estate in 2011

The Old River House is in the very heart of Kennebunkport, in town elegance and ease. No hassle finding parking in the 'Port,' just walk. Walk or drive to the beach. The adjacent Town Parks are very well maintained and used by locals and vacationeers. Kennebunkport really is Fun and Happiness. Its a great place for Adults and Kids.

Breakfast in the morning, by the wall of windows, looking at the Lobster boats going out to sea and the Sea Gulls following. You can smell the ocean when the tide goes out (approximately a 13 foot tide!) and the sun bakes the sea weed. In the evening, sitting in the rocking chairs on the porch, with a glass of your favorite beverage, makes for a great and relaxed day. Finally, when going to sleep, the evening breeze temperatures get into the 50's to 60's, making for the best sleep you will have.

GREAT WEEKEND

  • 5 of 5
We were a group of 12 people and the place was spacious enough for all of us. The kitchen is fully renovated and equipped with everything you need to cook. The place was clean and neat when we arrived.
Scott was very accomodating in letting us arrive earlier in the day than usual. The house is a 5 minute walk from all the restaurants/bars in town. We really enjoyed our stay and are considering renting it again next summer.

LOVE THE HOUSE AND LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
We (a couple in our 50s, our two daughters & a friend, all over 21) loved the Old River House. The listing is accurate. It is a historic property, so if you are looking for new construction & all that goes with it, the Old River House may not be your cup of tea, but we loved the feeling of staying a week in a place that reminded us of the Wayside Inn. The location is perfect for an easy walk to the Dock Square (or the other direction towards Mabels) for shopping, boat rentals, charters, meals & drinks without worry about driving & parking. The house is very clean & stocked with plenty of paper goods, fresh linens & towels. There are two bathrooms with showers; one on the second floor & one on the third which is part of cast iron tub setup, along with a half bath on the first & second floors. This made things convenient for all concerned. The beds are very comfortable, & there are lots of bedrooms so everyone has privacy. Although there is no air conditioning, there are fans in the closet of each room-we didn't need them as there was a nice breeze & cool nights during our stay. We had 3 cars with us & there was plenty of parking. We also brought bikes so we could park the truck with all the beach stuff at Gooches Beach & if someone missed the ride they could bike back & forth. You do need a beach sticker, which can be purchased at the beach or the Chamber of Commerce in town. As far as attractions and meals, here goes: Within walking distance we all enjoyed dinner, drinks and trivia at Federal Jacks; clam rolls at The Clam Shack which was crowded but not overrated; drinks at Ryan's Irish Pub; quick breakfast and snacks from HB Provisions-go there just to look around :) My husband and I also enjoyed a late dinner at Mabel's featuring great seafood and 50s ambiance. It was a little expensive for the two of us, but excellent. We did breakfast at Salt and Honey twice with the kids hitting it for lunch one day. We all liked it-good service and food. Not within walking but excellent for breakfast was The Wayfarer in Cape Porpoise. I had a french toast dish stuffed with lemony cream cheese and blueberries, drizzled with Maine maple syrup that I am still thinking about....I was full until dinnertime. The Steakhouse in Wells was a bargain for 5 adults for dinner and drinks at $150.00, as was Varano's for Italian. Rentals for kayaks & surf gear is cheaper in Wells but can be arranged in KBT. Take a surf lesson :) ENJOY!!!!

GREAT RENTAL LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
We rented this property with a group of friends for a wedding at a near by resort. The house is walking distance to everything in town. The house is spacious and comfortable with a beautiful view. The owner was extremely accommodating and pleasant. I would like to come back to this property for another vacation.

A HUGE, HISTORIC, FAMILY HOUSE

  • 5 of 5
We rented the Old River House for our family on the occasion of my son’s wedding in Wells, Maine. For us it was perfect. The house feels soaked in history. Everything is picturesque from the doorknobs to the claw foot bathtub to the incredible sideboard and the corner cabinets. There are such wonderful nooks and crannies that several family members got lost wandering around. (We found them.)

The house is amply supplied with table place settings for over 20 people, plenty of pots and pans, baskets and bowls, glasses and spices, and a linen closet full of clean sheets and towels,.

Our favorite things:

1. Gazing at the river from the comfy rocking chairs on the covered porch.
2. Watching the World Cup on the big screen TV, while sinking into leather sofas.
3. Eating hors d’oeuvres around the wonderful marble-topped island in the kitchen. I think we must have had 20 people in the kitchen and it still wasn’t crowded.

The house is a three minute walk to Dock Square in Kennebunkport and is also on the road down to lovely Cape Porpoise. The antique shops of Wells are only a few minutes away.

The Old River House is a perfect family house. I have a feeling that many families have loved it over the years. Our family hopes to return some day.

In making the arrangements the owner was always pleasant, helpful, and quick to respond.

GREAT VACATION HOME FOR A LARGE FAMILY.

  • 5 of 5
The Old River House is ideally located in Kennebunkport. We were within walking distance to quaint shops and wonderful resturaunts. Sail boat rides and offshore fishing trips were available directly accross the street. We visted several beautiful beaches which were only minutes away from the house. The house has a great kitchen, fully stocked with all the items we needed for preparing and eating meals at home when we were too tired to go out! We found the house to be well maintained, very clean and a wonderful place to stay. The owner, Scott Mahony, was available and quick to respond to any questions we had. I would definetly stay again, and highly recommend the Old River House as a vacation house for a family vacation in Kennebunkport.

WONDERFUL HOUSE AND LOCATION, GREAT FOR A GROUP!

  • 5 of 5
We just returned from a wonderful long weekend staying at the Old River house
in Kennebunkport. It is a large house and was perfect for our women's get away weekend. There were up to 8 of us on some of the nights and we were each able to have our own bedroom. It is a great location, a short walk to town for meals ,shopping, and then you can continue through town and head to the beach. The house was clean and well maintained. Plenty of room on the downstairs level, with a big kitchen, dining room and living room. All very nicely renovated and decorated. We have been going away together for 18 years to different locations all over New England and we found this house to be one of the nicest places we have stayed.

Maine is dramatic; cool evening air, windows open at nite. A huge 13' tide, means run in when the tide comes in. That also means the ocean has a 'sea smell'...because the sun bakes the seaweed on the rocky coast, when the tide is 'out.' The restaurants are all within walking distance. and state their 'award winning' status... for 'Lobster Rolls', or 'Fried Clams', or 'Clam Chowder', etc.
