Kent and I are from Nebraska and are Husker Fans. Kent is a Horticulturalist and I am a Realtor with HomeSmart Realty. We own Horticultural Frontiers Landscape and Design in Phoenix. Kent has been in Phoenix since 1984 and I have since 2002. We knew each other in High School and reconnect at a class reunion and got married in 2003!

Fran Titze purchased this house in 2004

We bought our properties one at a time around 2004, the view made the decision easy and as the others became available we purchased them. Which was great as they are all one on top of the other. We also live on the mountain so it make everything very easy.

The Mirage we purchased first. We thought we could fix it up and sell or rent it but after doing so we fell in love with the house and the view and decided to do short term vacation rental. We loved the theme idea and so as we acquired each one we decided to not only have the decor match the theme but even the permanent fixtures! Everyone loves the houses, views and the themes. One of the benefits for us is when friends and family come to visit they have a nice place to stay. Also a benefit is we have made pretty good friends with a few of the people who come to visit every year. We have one person who will be coming for their 5th aniversary at Sunset Mountain. I love all four houses and can't decide which I like best. We have now finished The Parlor located directly beneath the Ranchero for a Studio rental. It is called The Parlor, upscale 1980's western!! You won't be disappointed with it!

My girlfriend & I stayed at Ken & Fran's "Parlor" for 4 nights & enjoyed it immensely! It is the smaller of their units; however, for the 2 of us it was perfect! Fran was very accommodating, delivering an iron to the property for us on one occasion & answered several questions that we had.

The Parlor has everything you need & the décor was amazing! My girlfriend, Anje, especially liked the electric lanterns. The view from the hot tub is awesome & it is very private considering one of their other properties sit directly above The Parlor.

There were no "hidden" surprises upon our arrival. All was as told it would be. We would highly recommend visiting Sedona! Also, if looking for a horseback ride, we really enjoyed MacDonald Ranch. It was fairly close by, reasonable rates, & the people were friendly. Ask for wrangler Jack if ya can. He was very nice.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay & would definitely stay with Fran & Ken again if back in Phoenix!

This place was perfect for my business trip to Phoenix. Much more comfortable and scenic than a hotel. The drive downtown is fast and only about 15 minutes. The view is awesome and the porch gives the place a panoramic view. Fran was very easy to deal with and accommodating. Thanks!

I had never stayed in this part of Phoenix before but had a pleasant surprise. The casita was decorated with a number of creative touches and the owners clearly take pride in their little homes. The views were spectacular and the owners bent over backwards to make my stay as enjoyable as it could be. It was a great experience, with a good value and I will definitely return next year.

We rented Mirage in March, 2013. For us it was a horrible time, easily the worst vacation rental we have experienced. For context, we have done vacation web-based rentals in many parts of North America and Europe; we have never previously written a critical review of a rental, or had reason to. Some of the problems we found at Mirage are superficial and easily corrected, such as burnt out light bulbs and the fact that on our arrival the place was in need of a good cleaning. We complained and this was done. However, the dirt was so 'deep' and longstanding that any cleaning done in a day could only touch the surface. Problems of cleanliness included dirty dishes, pots, and pans. Likewise the coffee maker, tea kettle and toaster.
Other issues are more fundamental having to do with the fact that the place is very poorly maintained and in need of serious repair or renovation, and much of the equipment provided either doesn't work or is ancient and in need of repair. For example, the vacuum cleaner is useless, ditto the dishwasher [after one try we washed the dishes by hand for the rest of the month]. The living room tv occasionally malfunctioned [a large black rectangle appeared in the middle of the screen]. The stove itself is ancient; only one rack. The fridge which is supposed to have a water filter and produce ice, does not. When the heater/air conditioner is switched on it sounds as if a helicopter is lifting off the roof. The sinks emit rotten odors. The bamboo blinds in the bedroom and bathroom are broken. Many of the doors are poorly fitted so that they scrape the floor when opened, making it very difficult to open them fully. The trim around the outside door at the back is split and rotted at the bottom; in addition lots of the framing around doors and windows (which do not open) is seriously stained and needs repainting. We found the BBQ filthy. After we pointed this out, the owners cleaned it but grease and corrosion made starting it precarious to say the least; we didn't use it. The bathroom exhaust fan is inefficient, possibly because it is imperfectly secured to the wall [there is a notable gap between the fan frame and the wall]. The folding door to the bedroom closet is unbelievably flimsy and like many other parts of the house in a state of bad repair.
We regret having to write such a negative review because the owners appear to be good people who want to do well by their clients. Perhaps these comments will spur them to try harder.

Owner's Response: I was rather shocked to read the review submitted to Home Away. I am very sorry and upset with the fact they did not enjoy The Mirage. Both Kent and I responded to their requests promptly and courteously.Of course the casita was cleaned before their arrival, the additional cleaning service we provided to them with whatever they felt necessary was, according to them, “Excellent”. The burned out light bulb was changed within the hour. A brand new, never had been used flat screen was in the bedroom, they asked us to take it out. The living room provides a new large flat screen that was purchased a few months ago. Although the kitchen appliances are not brand new, they all operate very well, and the additional rack for the oven was stored beside the cabinet. This house was built in the 70’s and was 70 percent remodeled in 2003. The large picture windows in the living room don’t open because they can’t. The kitchen and bedroom windows open. In Arizona most A/C units are on the roof, as is this one, which means you could hear it turn on and off. The refrigerator does not have a filter system but does have an automatic ice machine that works. Never have we had one negative comment or complaint about the appliances or anything at The Mirage. We have been providing vacation stays for over 100’s of visitors since 2004, and have never received such a harsh critique. In fact, we receive only compliments regarding the residence, the hospitality and the overall experience, thus the five star rating from other travelers. These people were in their mid 80’s and perhaps the nasty fall the gentleman made while on a walk influenced these comments. We were available and visited the house several times throughout their stay, when asked if everything was alright and if they were enjoying themselves, the answer was always positive, apparently until the fall at the end of their stay. It seems it would be far more considerate and productive to ask us verbally for anything rather than posting an unjustifiable response on the internet. Our properties are not brand new, high end, or resort houses, thus the lower rental price, BUT they are clean, unique, private and we try to do everything we can to make every ones stay enjoyable. To any of our future travelers, if you would like to request recommendations from past visitors please feel free to ask. Fran Titze

The first time I stayed at margarita was in November and loved it so much I came back in December for a more extended stay. Beautiful views of Phoenix with a hot tub set up so you can enjoy every sunset in luxury. While it's located in Phoenix, given that its on top of a mountain, it makes you feel like your tucked away in your own private resort. Fran and Kent are good people who go above and beyond to ensure a pleasant stay. 5 stars, highly recommended.

Sunset Mountain Casitas is the only place I stay when I am in Phoenix. I have stayed at all 3 casitas over the past few years and the views are great, the quiet, private location is very relaxing, and the owners Fran and Kent are friendly and helpful. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone.
