Kona Plaza, located right in the heart of Kailua-Kona, is a quiet and private condominium building within walking distance of everything you want to do in Kona. Just across the street, you can go to the beach, the pier, shopping, and to the best restaurants in town. This condo unit (303) is located on the third floor overlooking beautiful Kailua Bay with a direct ocean view.
The condo has one bedroom with a new King sized bed and a very comfortable queen size foldout couch in the living room (sleeps 2-4 people). Blow up mattresses are also available if the kids want to sleep on the lanai (Our boys love sleeping outdoors on the lanai). The condo has recently been partially renovated and redecorated in a tropical and comfortable island style. It includes a fully equipped kitchen for cooking (no dishwasher) as well as a washer/dryer inside the unit.
Guests of Kona Plaza unit 303 can enjoy the onsite pool, sun decks, BBQ area, and secure onsite garage parking. Nearby, you will find additional shops, art galleries, beach apparel stores, hair salons, spas, jewelry stores, and great restaurants.
This location is perfect for Ironman. You can watch the swimming portion of the competition from the lanai or one of the sundecks and the marathon (on Ali'i Dr) from the lanai as well. Spinner Dolphins jump for your entertainment almost daily! The huge sliding glass doors out to the lanai overlook Ali'i Drive and the ocean. However, when you go to sleep you don't want to hear the action on Ali'i Drive! Fortunately, the glass sliding doors are made of soundproof glass and provide a very quiet experience for everyone in the unit. Central air conditioning is provided.

We LOVE Hawaii and especially Kona!
This unit is as close to central Kailua-Kona as you can get. Go down the stairs or use the elevator and be in the middle of everything Kona has to offer. Including one of the closest rentals to the start line of Ironman. Underground secure parking is a rare bonus in Kona. Watch marine life like Spinner Dolphins and Humpbacks, harbor boats, cruise ships, submarines and harbor activities from the living room and lanai!
We arrived after a couple days at the Hilton in Waikaloa and were not expecting a whole lot. Turns out we were quite happy with the condo. It was clean, did not smell musty from the humidity, had a comfortable bed and all the extras that you'd expect from a condo that you wont get in a hotel. We used the boogie boards, cooler container, had friends over for dinner, watched the canoers and swimmers every morning and could event see the sunset through the big banyan tree out front.
The room was quiet, the lanai was large, well appointed and the air con worked fine. There was WiFi and cable. The kitchen and bath were dated but everything worked fine. It was good the have an elevator to go up and down with our bikes. The pool was never busy.
We'll look for this unit if we make it back next year.
We really enjoyed being in the center of town and close to everything. We could walk to all of the restaurants in town yet it was still quiet and peaceful.
We saw dolphins jumping in the ocean from the lanai almost every day, amazing view! The unit is well equipped, clean and comfortable. The daily rate was far better than any of the other comparable "view" units I researched. We will be back!
We had the best stay ever in downtown Kailua-Kona. Condo was nothing fancy but VERY comfortable. It is a real plus having a washer and dryer when you are staying for n extended time. We were there for the month of January and had a fantastic time. Our unit was on the third floor and were had an excellent view of the ocean. Breakfast every morning on the balcony looking at the ocean.
First of all,
my agenda was to do NOTHING!!! and RELAX! Low maintenance! Perfect spot for that. I have lived on Oahu so I knew where to relax- KONA! I also knew that I didn't want too fancy and pretentious. This became our home for a week. They have everything I do mean everything. Local spot. I felt so comfortable with the city. I had stayed in Hilo before but I am definitely going back next year. All was in walking distance. Had every need met. even some great movies for the dvd! Although a bit older unit (furniture) we loved the little blue kitchen and the awesome balcony to ship and people watch!! The owners even were so accomadating to a little key mishap. (owners always willing to help with questions). My only concern is when can I go back. It was perfect for 3 ! Thanks again to Mary and Tracy for a memorable vacation for our Mom/daughter vacation!!
We really enjoyed our stay here. Great view of the bay, where you can sometimes see dolphins. Location is perfect and the parking garage was really convenient. Very spacious and well equiped. Kitchen could maybe use some renovation, but everything worked fine. There's a night club nearby called Amethyst, but there's no noise at all since they recently stopped people to have their drinks outside. The only noise is from the AC units of the shops downstairs. The AC in the condo works great and is not noisy.
My husband and I stayed in this condo in Kona Plaza and found it to be delightfully decorated in tropical style, with a breathtaking ocean view from the living/dining room & the large lanai. Everything we needed was there: fully stocked kitchen & bathroom, all sorts of beach/water related stuff in the closets (snorkel gear, sand pails, boogie boards, beach chair, beach towels, sunscreen, etc.). There was even a stackable washer/dryer in the unit. We lacked for nothing...
And the view! Astounding! We watched fabulous sunsets, spinner dolphins, athletes practicing for the swim part of Ironman, cruise ships, and much more right from the living/dining area or the spacious lanai.
The condo complex is located right on Ali'i Drive, the main street in Kona town where there are countless shops & eateries, as well as historic churches and a palace. The Kona harbor (where there is a small beach suitable for young children - protected from waves & nasty currents) is 2 blocks away. A short drive (~1 mile) away are shopping complexes with Safeway, Long's, Walmart, Target, etc.
The outside approach to the condo complex (the back side) is "all concrete" - very stark and dated appearance. Not sure about the age of the complex, but I would guess 1950s. Parking is in an underground garage that is very convenient and secure - and includes a walking entrance directly to the shops on Ali'i Drive (also very secure). There are elevators, so the complex would be suitable for anyone with mobility issues. I have rated the complex 4 stars, rather than 5 simply based upon the outside appearance.
The owners of this condo - Mary and Tracy - were great: very helpful with suggestions of what to do, where to go, etc. Mary called me when I sent in the reservation request and we chatted for quite some time about The Big Island, the condo, and much more.
If you are looking for "the lap of luxury", you might try somewhere else. But if a charming condo with direct ocean view, modestly priced and in a fabulous location suits you - this is the place. We loved it, and hope to be back again next year.
Watch spinner dolphins, Humpback whales (seasonal), cruise ships, paddle boarders and all that Kailua Bay has to offer from the living area and lanai. Spinner Dolphins swim by almost daily! ELEVATOR takes you from either secured garage or main entry level. NO NEED TO TAKE STAIRS (unless you want to)!

Ironman Event.. Oct 1-Oct 20 - Must stay a minimum of 10 consecutive nights at the rate of $220.00/night. Stay a little longer, the 11th night or more for $89.00 per night.
