Overview

Ashland Lodge Rental Photos and Description

2600 sq. ft. Lodge, 5 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

HOUSE: As you enter the gate, the packed gravel road curves for 1/2 mile with Finger Lake on your left side and a diverse forest of red and white pines, aspen, ironwood, birch, juneberry and balsam fir on your right side. After making the final curve the forest will open up to the Up North House. The 2,600 square foot house was built in 1929 by architect George Rapp as his summer home. You will enter the house through the three season porch perfect for enjoying your morning coffee, reading and conversation. From the porch you enter the dining room and kitchen. You will notice a fourteen foot ceiling, a beautiful oak ice box and industrial style sink both original to the house. Above the ice box is an aerial photo of Finger Lake we took in 1995. Connected to the dining room is a fully stocked kitchen with new oak cabinets and plenty of storage. Leaving the kitchen and entering the great room your gaze follows the magnificent 28 foot stone fireplace to the ceiling.

The ceiling is constructed with rough hewn beams. Looking at the second floor you will notice an original birch railing framing three sides of the room. On the first floor to your left are two bedrooms centered by a full bath with a shower. To your right are two bedrooms and the porch room which leads to the outside deck. Each of four first floor bedrooms has a sink in its clothes closet. On the other side of the fireplace is the sun room, a cozy room with half timber wood walls and three picture windows for lake viewing. The kitchen and the bathrooms have linoleum flooring, the great room is carpeted and all other rooms have original hemlock wood flooring. As you walk upstairs, there are two open dormers with window seats, prefect for reading and nature viewing. The second floor bedroom has a fourteen foot ceiling, walk-in closet, floor to ceiling fireplace and a full bathroom with a tub. Through the French door, step out onto the fifteen-foot balcony and enjoy the lake and forest view.

LAKE: Off the porch room is an oversize deck great for outdoor eating, sunbathing and watching the stars. Enjoy the fire pit just off the deck. Wood is provided and stored under the deck step. There is a path straight off the deck leading through the woods to a bench with a great view of the lake. Go right and cross the lawn then follow the path taking you to the swimming beach. If you’re looking for a nice short walk try following the lake around the point from the swimming beach. The lake got its name for the five inlets resembling fingers on a hand. You can fish for bass, northern pike, and sunfish in its expansive 50 acres. You can bring your own or rent a canoe and kayak from a local paddling company to fish or investigate the lake. Enjoy swimming from the sand beach and the use of a pontoon raft.

LAND: The 290 acres of woods are surrounded by the Chequamegon National Forest and consists red and white pine, maple, birch, aspen, juneberry and ironwood. Besides walking the shoreline and the driveway there is a great trail through the woods from the garage side of the house leading about ¾ of a mile up to Forest Road 223. There is a large yard surrounding the house where bocce ball, badminton, horseshoes and other games may be played. You might see and hear a variety of wildlife including: deer, bear, fox, rabbits, squirrels, turtles, herons, geese, loons, ducks, hawks, whippoorwills and other birds.

About Holly Brassington

Holly (Mom) and Rob (Son) Brassington live in Madison Wisconsin and love the outdoors, especially the Up North House. Holly is a non-profit accountant working part time as she enjoys retirement. She loves gardening, volunteering at the UW Madison Arboretum, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and with the Boy Scouts, hiking, cross country skiing, biking and visiting the dog park with her Brittany, Ziggy. In a former life, Holly restored Victorian Era properties. Rob is a student at UW Milwaukee in Middle Childhood Early Education (grades 1st-8th), an Eagle Scout, an avid runner and biker, who one day hopes to hike the Appalachian Trail.

Holly Brassington purchased this lodge in 1985

Why Holly Brassington chose Ashland

After visiting friends in Iron River we fell in love with the area. We spent a summer camping at different locations looking for secluded property with a private lake and sizable acreage. It was a very enjoyable experience learning about the area, driving through the Chequamegon National Forest roads. Finger Lake was exactly what we wanted. Now we needed a house. We couldn’t decide what we were going to build until we saw a news article in the Ashland Daily Press titled “Save Rapp Lodge”. The article described a historic lodge in great need of repair, owned by the Forest Service that would be destroyed if the lodge was not moved. We purchased the building in 1987, cut it into pieces, loaded it on flat bed trucks and moved it 40 miles to its current location. That was only the beginning of an eight year renovation.

What makes this lodge unique

Privacy, quality rest, family time, access to ATV trails including the Tri County ATV Corridor, architecturally unique lodge, private Lake on 350 acres parcel, fishing, gorgeous views, wildlife experience.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The “Up North House” is a historic, architecturally magnificent, yet cozy vacation retreat deep in the north woods. Our family has fallen in love with this spacious, charming house and private land. There are many things to do for adults and kids nearby if you’re tired of nature walks, rock hunting and fishing. We love Bayfield and the Duluth zoo. Next year we plan on taking the grandkids to the Great Lakes Visitors Center. We’re thrilled to have discovered the “Up North House” and we made it our annual family vacation spot. We’re certain there’s not another like it anywhere else on earth!

Another great vacation at the Up North House!

  • 5 of 5
This was our 4th vacation at the Up North House. We had a great time! The fishing was fantastic! We caught huge bass, walleye and pan fish! ATVing on the local roads and trails was so much fun, and the scenery was incredible. We had campfires each night and gazed at the stars. We hiked the trails and saw eagles, deer, a wolf and a bear again this year. We spent a lot of family time in the great room and around the kitchen table. Many card games were played until early in the morning. The worst part of the vacation was when it ended. This place is heaven! We feel so relaxed when we are there! And because we return each year, it is like it is our own place. I have already made reservations for next year. I hope the next 51 weeks go by quickly! Thanks Holly and Rob for such a wonderful place to go. See you next fall!

Great peace and quiet

  • 5 of 5
We loved our vacation at the "Up North Cabin". It's very private and peaceful. You have the whole lake to yourself and all the privacy we wanted. The swimming area is nice and the fishing was good. The cabin is a classic style and worked well for our family. Ping pong and games in the basement is nice too. Walks on the surrounding roads are nicer than some hiking trails we've used. We saw gold and bald eagles and lots of other wildlife.

3rd Visit and counting

  • 5 of 5
This was our 3rd visit to the Up North House. We had a wonderful time. Holly and Rob are so kind to share this fabulous home with us. We had fantastic camp fires. We played cards until the wee hours in the huge kitchen. We hiked around the property. We saw a bear in the woods and eagles over the lake. The fall colors were unbelievable. Lots of beautiful photos were taken of the area. We went fishing. We took some day trips to Duluth. And of course we had to eat at the Delta Diner! We went ATVing all of the way up to Lake Superior. Our favorite times, however, were spent with our family sitting around the great room, talking and telling stories. We can't wait to go again next year! If you are looking for peace and quiet and privacy, with tons of things to do, this is the place to go! But don't tell anyone, we want to keep this place our little secret!

Great place for a family getaway!

  • 5 of 5
Our family just returned from an excellent stay at the 'Up North House'. We had a great time - the property is huge, the house is pleasant and perfect for a large family, and the lake made a great place to spend time with the kids. It is very secluded - in our week there we only saw one other truck, and two 4-wheelers on the fire road. One day we heard some logging nearby - otherwise there was nobody else around.

Just a few tips/notes for any visitors:

- Bring bug spray. The driveway in is in the shade, and the bugs were especially bad there. Once around the house/lake area it wasn't too bad, but you will want bug spray.
- The TV has a component and HDMI input. We brought along a Nintendo Wii for the kids to play in the evening and it worked just fine.
- Iron River is about 12 miles away and is a good source for gas, simple groceries, and lunch at A&W.
- There is AT&T 'EDGE' cellular data coverage to get your internet fix - we brought along an AT&T iPad and it worked fine.

Overall it was a great visit - I would highly recommend it for a family looking for a quiet getaway!
