We do not use the calendar on the VRBO site. Please contact the owner or scroll down just below the “Rate Details” for the link to The Fresh Breeze Inn website to view our calendar. (we keep it up to date) We offer deep discounts for week or more stays in November through to the 20th of December. All of the water running through the Inn is now safe to drink due to a new ultraviolet and filtration system. All Apartments have digitally programmable wall safes for your valuables.

The Fresh Breeze Inn is a cool and comfortable oasis fringed by jungle. It is an easy seven-minute walk through the colorful and safe village to the beach and restaurant area. Your new Chacala home sits on the quiet hilltop catching the afternoon breeze and affording you a stunning panoramic view of the sky, jungle, mountains, bay and the ocean stretching to the horizon. From your patio watch the fishing boats come in and the occasional pods of whales playing in the bay. Your kitchen comes stocked with fresh-ground regional coffee, bottled purified drinking water, cooking supplies such as salt, pepper, oil, sugar, and a full array of utensils. Sip your favorite drink, sit back and enjoy the perfect small-town Mexican beach experience.

Many bird watchers flock to the Inn because it has some of the best habitat for birds in front of and beside the Inn to be found in this vicinity. Over 60 species were identified here in less than a week from the front patio. I have a list of Chacala birds which is available.

The third floor bungalow (#3) fills the top or third floor of the Inn with a view in every direction and has a large private balcony facing the ocean. One must book early for this unit. It was entirely booked by October first) The two main floor bungalows (#1 & 2) have nice ocean and village-jungle views with a patio in front facing the ocean and a shady garden behind the Inn. The Fresh Breeze Inn was completed three years ago, so it is contemporary and clean. It is invitingly decorated with colorful Mexican tiles, a hand-painted ceramic sink and has fully-screened windows and large patio doors with ocean views in every apartment. Although rarely needed during high season, there is a ventilation fan system. The beds have high-quality mattresses, so you will sleep soundly after a day of adventuring or relaxing, secluded from the bustle and dust of the town center. The bird watching from the Inn is exceptional. Sit on your patio and identify up to 70 species. The garden area adjoining the jungle is a great place to sit and enjoy the cool breeze and shade in the afternoons. It features local fruits, flowers and tropical plants. There is a terracotta barbecue and night lighting in the garden available for guests to use.

Your American host, Lance Thorne, lives on site and loves to share his extensive knowledge of the region's hiking trails, bird watching sites, local restaurants, fishing opportunities, tours, markets and shopping, banking services, and regional transportation. Maps of local trails are also available. At the Fresh Breeze Inn, you enjoy the quiet privacy and comfort of a fully-contained suite with its own entrance, as well as the assistance of a helpful English-speaking host, happy to answer your questions about the region or translate a Spanish phrase. Check below “Rate Details” for a link to the Fresh Breeze Inn website which has our calendar availability as well as information on the Inn, the village of Chacala, and the region.

Just ninety minutes north of Puerto Vallarta, you turn down a winding road leading into a magical paradise of blossoming mango groves, colorful wildflowers and a misty green lake filled with exotic birds. The village of Chacala is a friendly and authentic little fishing town, a well-kept secret hidden from the outside world until the recent road. Chacala will charm you with its minstrel mariachi bands, cobblestone streets, family-run beach restaurants serving the day's catch, homemade salsa, ice-cold beer and the perfect margarita. Local people are outgoing and helpful, and it is safe to walk around at night. The half-moon bay of soft sand is fringed by a picturesque palm plantation. The water is warm, inviting and safe.

Minutes from the activity and amenities of town, the Fresh Breeze Inn is a cool, comfortable paradise in Chacala, your new favorite vacation town. We do not use the calendar on this site.

About Lance Thorne

Welcome to the Fresh Breeze Inn. Let me introduce myself: my name is Lance , and for most of my adult life I have made high-end, one-of-a-kind furniture in rural Southern Oregon. I Have been living about half of the time here in Chacala for the past 4 years, and love its laid-back rustic charm. I look forward to sharing this very special spot with you. I hike the local trails frequently and sometimes lead hikes from Chacala to various destinations. I am really enjoying my new found vocation as Inn Keeper. Being a jack of all trades allows me to deal with just about any problem that comes up. I really enjoy meeting new people and I get a kick out of helping visitors 'find what they are looking for'.

Lance Thorne purchased this bungalow in 2009
Why Lance Thorne chose Chacala

Previously I had traveled extensively in Mexico, but until I arrived in Chacala, had no intention of buying land in the country. But when I first visited Chacala, the inexplicable happened: I fell in love with the people and the town. It immediately felt like home. Within weeks I purchased my plot and began planning to build. It's been an adventure which has resulted in the Fresh Breeze Inn! I first opened for business on January first, 2010, and enjoyed a successful first season - as well as my new role as resident inn-keeper.

What makes this bungalow unique

The Fresh Breeze Inn is unique in enjoying a breath-taking panoramic 360-degree view. The cool afternoon breeze afforded by its hilltop location is a rare luxury, and the tropical garden which lies behind the Inn, and adjoins the jungle, offers you a shady quiet spot to read or relax. The birding from the Inn is considered to be the best in the village. Newly constructed, the Inn is located on a hill over looking the village in a pleasant neighborhood of beautiful houses with elegant stonework and flowering gardens.

First Time in Chacala...

Submitted: February 5, 2012 Stayed: January 2012
...and hopefully not our last! We had a great time in Apartment 2 for one week with everything we needed. We couldn't have asked for a better host: friendly, helpful and informative...a really nice guy. He provided little touches like local coffee every morning, help with shopping in Las Varas for groceries, information on hikes and activities in the area, and tips for getting back to the airport. Chacala itself is a quiet little fishing village and was just the place we wanted with a small, beautiful beach, calm waters, friendly locals, rustic cobblestone roads, and a great whale watching tour. Lots of birds to watch while we sat on the beautiful patio, in the back garden, or on the roof top which is right next to "Gringo" trees (nicknamed for their red, peeling bark according to our host). Can't wait to go back to Fresh Breezes Inn but we'd like to stay longer next time!

Owner's Response: This couple did their first serious bird watching due to help and advice from a birding couple in another apartment. I'm just getting good binoculars delivered so that I can learn as well...

My husband & I were lucky enough to have stayed in the top unit this past May, and celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary. What a wonderful relaxing hideaway! Lance was the perfect host, the room was exceptionally clean and well-cared for. We bought fish at the local fish market and BBQ'd in the little garden area. What an oasis, especially sitting out on the deck enjoying the view. Plenty of hiking and birding places, kayaking and exploring. It's for travelers, not tourists.

Owner's Response: I have had a few newlyweds stay in Apartment #3. It is much like a honeymoon suite. Private and quite with an incredible view! Chacala is one of the worlds best kept secrets!! Come check it out...

Our stay at the Fresh Breeze Inn

5 of 5

4 December 2011

Last month my wife and I vacationed in the charming, relatively unknown city of Chacala, Nayarit, Mexico, Wikipedia has an inromative, delightful, and accurate webpage about Chacala. Chacala is on the Pacific, about a forty minute van ride from the Puerto Vallarta airport.

We stayed at the Fresh Breeze Inn. The website for the Fresh Breeze Inn is accurate and informative. We found this treasure of a destination the old-fashioned way, by word of mouth, a recommendation from friends who’d stayed there the year before and said they would return.

The Inn, a three-story fourplex with a sun deck on the roof, has three available units. The innkeeper lives fulltime in the fourth unit. We’d heard from our friends that the innkeeper, a designer and manufacturer of custom furniture and custom homes in the U.S., had personally designed and built the inn three or four years ago. The interior of the unit, from the beautifully tiled countertops, to the custom-made bed with built-in drawers below it, to the well-appointed kitchen reflected the work of a master craftsman.

We stayed in unit two on the ground floor. From the kitchen and adjoining spacious patio, where we had breakfast some mornings and cocktails at sunset when we weren’t at one of the terrific local restaurants on the beach (a seven-minute walk away) at sundown, we had stunning vistas of the ocean and forests of majestic palms.

In the mornings we took interesting hikes in the hills above the beach, we always felt safe on the charming cobblestone streets, and welcomed as visitors by the friendly residents.

The inkeeper was a gracious and superb; at the outset we felt at ease with him and were well-cared for guests.

An Absolutely Wonderful Place to Stay in Chacala, Nayarit, Mexico

Submitted: February 18, 2011 Stayed: January 2011
Lance Thorne is just the kind of inn keeper you would hope for. He’s attentive, caring and sincere. For five month prior to arriving in Chacala he was always there for me on the internet answering question after question, often many were already on his website. His inn is almost new, very clean and everything works including good hot water in the shower. I arrived with the start of a bad cold and he heard me coughing for many days and nights. One day he brought me a container of his own home made chicken soup. And soup really helped me get over the cold. Two other times he brought me freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, nice! Another time he had room in his truck for one more person and he invited me to go on a hike to the Alta Vista petroglyphs. Lance is very knowledgeable about the area, the history and what’s currently going on in Chacala. He’s an example of several “gringos” in town who work at promoting Chacala and making it a better place for everyone who lives here. His house keeper is meticulous and more importantly honest. I’d recommend the Fresh Breeze Inn to anyone. I stayed on the top floor which is 34 steps, so if the stairs are an issue the other units are very nice one bedrooms on the street level. I can sit and stare at the view of the bay, the surrounding hills, the sky, and the sunsets (wow). With two big sliding doors and windows on all four sides this unit is open, airy and the sun is always shining in a window somewhere (6 am to 6 pm). The farming and ranching town of Las Varas is six miles away and it has most services and stores necessary. It’s a classic small, cobblestone street town with a main plaza and church. You wouldn’t notice this just driving through town on highway 200. I was lucky enough to be here for the ten day Las Varas fiesta in early February. What fun to take in the music, food, fireworks and great people watching. One of my favorite things about Mexico and especially people here is if you give a smile you will get one in return.
