Further details for this vacation cottage rental in Charente, France

Relax: Poitou-Charentes is one of the sunniest regions of France. Melons, sun flowers and of course grapes clothe most fields around us at Les Chevilloux. Leave the stress at work and let the warmth and tranquility refresh you. All our visitors comment that they eat and sleep better here and have enjoyed being able to relax completely. We have maps of local walks, and use of the excellent village tennis courts is included in the rental. In the garden we have a net for badminton or soft ball, 'Boules', and in the barn there is a tennis table for having fun with ping pong. We also have 4 bicycles for you explore the surrounding country lanes and forest. The village tennis courts are available for your use at no cost and just 30 minutes away are the riding stables where you can hack-out and explore the local country side 'from the best view in the world'. At Mansle you can hire a canoe and paddle the lazy Charente river where dragonflies and herons will entertain you.

Agris and around : Our little village of Agris is a 2 minute walk down the lane. A Prehistoric treasure, the golden helmet belonging to a Gallic chieftain was unearthed near the village a few years ago, and the whole area is peppered with limestone caves and grottoes. La Rochefoucauld and Angoulême both have excellent restaurants from all corners of the globe. Angoulême is home of the famous classic car race 'Circuit des Remparts' where Fangio made his name. It is held on the second weekend of September and is a must for all those who delight in the names Bentley, MG, Jaguar, Morgan, Lagonda and many other British classics. The weekend ends on the Sunday with the classic race around the ramparts to sound of Bugattis and others and the perfume of racing Castrol! We have secure parking, garaging and tools for guests with classic cars. The delights of prehistoric Dordogne, the beaches of Royan and La Rochelle, and the cellars and distilleries of Bordeaux and Cognac are all within easy reach.

Getting here: Les Chevilloux is easily reached without an overnight stop, by car and ferry or tunnel crossing. The journey takes you through some of the most beautiful regions of France, including the cheese and cider making areas of Normandy, and the Loire valley. Even travelling by train from the UK is easy. In only 5 hours from Waterloo, via Lille (avoid the Paris route), the high speed train (TGV) will speed you to Angoulême, where car hire is immediately available. For those who wish to fly, Angouleme is 10 minutes down the lane and Poitiers, Limoges and Bordeaux airports are only a short drive away. If you have a satnav just enter our coordinates N45°46.503' E0°19.969' to get to Les Chevilloux.

April in CHARENTE

Landrover bedfordshire
Review Submitted: April 23, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
Les Chevilloux is in a lovely setting, with a bread and cake van that calls every morning and a local shop in walking distance, next to the bar and restaurant of Agris. It is very peaceful, buy the owners eggs they are delicious and you can feed the chickens leftover bread and salad,,,they fight over the lettuce,,, Chris and Paula make you very welcome, and are lucky to have such an idyllic lifestyle, The gites are spotless and comfortable with all you need in the kitchen to cook for yourself, but local chefs will deliver complete meals if you want at good prices. The weather was good and we had a lovely stay there and would recommend them
Owner's Response: Paula and Chris are delighted that we have hit the spot again. As always it is simple: Clean and fully equipped accommodation, Superb location, and our determination to go the extra mile for our guests. We look forward to seeing Landrover again.

One of my best self catering holidays ever.

Review Submitted: October 13, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
Our stay at Les Chevilloux earlier this year was simply glorious. I'm quite a fussy renter in that I require space, charm, cotton sheets, a well equipped kitchen, a pool, and more - all at a reasonable price. From the online description and photos Les Chevilloux seemed to fit the bill. These properties, the grounds and the hosts far exceeded my expectations. The properties are well equipped and clean and the hosts are serious when they say if there is anything you need help with just ask including information on days out/places to shop/life in France etc.

The local bar is very 'real' and friendly and serves a good simple meal though it was rarely open when we were there. Chez Steph in la Rochefoucauld was great and obviously the place to be seen with the locals out in force and holding court, it was very interesting. There was a visiting fair in the car park when we visited Chez Steph and the atmosphere was buzzing with children wolfing down their ice-creams before heading off to the fair - not the best of ideas perhaps.

This IS rural France and the pace is slow, it isn't the place to go if you're looking for endless shopping and nights out, though I understand there is a great music festival in nearby Cognac, but if you're looking to relax with family, with a group of friends (renting both properties) or just by yourself I cannot recommend these properties more highly.

Angouleme airport really is about 15 minutes drive away (you do need a car to stay at these properties) making it easy to pop across. The area is culturally and historically rich and if that's what interests you you won't be disappointed and the National Memorial of the Resistance of Chasseneuil is worth a visit. On a lighter note - we greatly enjoyed trying out the velo-rail, it's quite a weird but good fun.

I went to Les Chevilloux to relax and relax I did. I swam in the pool (almost) every day, watched Chris collect eggs which we later ate, cooked a courgette from Paula's vegetable patch, drank wine and ate cherries with the guests in the other cottage, played badminton in the paddock and table tennis in the garage and ambled round the local markets. On our last night we ate a meal cooked by the Les Chevilloux Chef which was delicious, particularly the chocolate mousse. I don't generally go back to the same place more than once but I will DEFINITELY be going back to Les Chevilloux hopefully with my sister, mum and niece in tow too.

Thinking of it? Go on...book it!
Owner's Response: Everyone likes to receive compliments and a reward for a good job done. To be hosts to lovely people - new friends, is reward indeed. To hear that Les Chevilloux is even better than the photos and description shows us we are achieving the goals we set ourselves each year. We find it hard sometimes to believe our luck in living here in such peace in the gardens which Paula designed and which seem to expand every year. We enjoy the company of our guests, even just seeing them wandering around looking at the plants, makes all the hard digging worthwhile, and look forward to making new friends in 2010!

Les Chevilloux

Ann & Don Lincolnshire, United Kingdom
Review Submitted: September 7, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
This year was the seventh year in a row that we have stayed in Chris & Paula's wonderful holiday cottages. That must say something about the welcome we receive, the superb quality & cleanliness of the cottages, the beautifully kept grounds & the great recreational facilities.
There are some lovely drives to the local towns & villages and wonderful restaurants.
The owners just cannot do enough to make your stay truly memorable. A real home from home!
Owner's Response: We are always delighted to see our guests choosing to return to Les Chevilloux. Not only do friendships grow but it demonstrates to us that we are getting it right and also that improvements suggested are from those with intimate knowledge of seeing Les Chevilloux grow from strength to strength. Much of the planned development has been as a result of previous guests comments, which we welcome with open arms.

Les Chevilloux - August 2009

Anna & Jochen The Netherlands
Review Submitted: September 6, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We found Les Chevilloux charmingly situated in a peaceful rural area amongst a patchwork of sunflower fields and verdant countryside. The two fully equipped cottages and the former farmhouse house in which owners Paula and Chris reside, are set in large rambling gardens. A pre-ordered BBQ was a wonderful start to the holiday and can be highly recommended after a day of driving. With the great swimming pool, play areas, companions in the neighboring cottage, chickens to be fed and fresh eggs to be collected, our children had plenty to keep them entertained over our 2 week stay. Outside the front gate we found a lot to see and discover in the local region. Overall, we found it an idyllic spot for a relaxing family holiday and Paula and Chris could not have done more to have made us feel at home.

Anna & Jochen. The Netherlands
Owner's Response: Chevilloux Chef has been a resounding success and we are so pleased that Shelagh's menu has made our guests so happy. We enjoy the company of our guests at whatever level they wish. We are here to ensure that your holiday is all you desire and the gardens are just one of the areas which make Les Chevilloux such an attraction. Paula is the gardener of course, and Chris is deputy assistant under gardener. Our collection of labelled plants and shrubs is growing and after 10 years the development continues!
