After extensive personal travel and military moves, Shepherdstown is the place to which we always dreamed of returning. Following retirement from active duty in the US Coast Guard we have made Shepherdstown our permanent home and we look forward to hosting you here at Perchasta Cottage so you can experience the many things that have made us fall in love with Shepherdstown and this property again and again.
Keith Janssen purchased this cottage in 1969
The beautiful, rural setting and numerous cultural and historical opportunities make Shepherdstown the ideal place to visit.
Come stay with us at Perchasta Cottage and learn about all the things that make our vacation home rental 'green.' The unique 'green' features of this and the main home on our property will surprise and delight. We love sharing our experience with others about green building, the different systems we chose to install in the home and our reasons for doing so. If this is an area of interest for you, please don't hesitate to ask for a tour.
Stayed for 3 nights over the Thanksgiving weekend as our daughter was on duty at Shepherdstown University and we wouldn't miss Thanksgiving with her! The owners were great at corresponding with me and answering any questions I had prior to our stay! When we arrived, we were amazed at how clean and tastefully decorated the cottage was - absolutely beautiful! We felt right at home and the kitchen was completely stocked for a much needed cup of coffee after the 2 hour drive in the snow! We brought our own food, of course, but forgot to bring creamer/sugar and there it was! Loved all the books in the cottage as we are avid readers! The property is gorgeous and their gift of homemade honey (from their own beehives) is the best I have ever had! We had a fun night at the Charlestown Casino and then Thanksgiving dinner at the Bavarian Inn. Had extended family also in town and we all gathered at the cottage after Thanksgiving dinner to watch movies and have some wine! It fit the five of us perfectly for our three nights and had plenty of room for our extended family to comfortably hang out with us for movie night. We also brought a Thanksgiving dinner we had cooked the day before we came out and there was plenty of room in the refrigerator for it and plenty of pots/pans/utensils, etc. to warm it up and have our leftovers throughout our stay! We went to Antietam Battlefield on Friday (a big hit with my teenage nephew and 9 year old niece) and our daughter was our "tour guide." That evening, we went to Shepherdstown for the annual tree lighting at McMurran Hall and the festivities (roasted chestnuts/hot chocolate/bonfire/Mr. and Mrs. Claus/the Grinch)! The kids had a ball, us adults did, too! ;) I can't say enough about the owners and the cottage - perfect in every way and our stay was absolutely wonderful. I will be returning and already have family members (aunts/uncles) interested in coming out to stay at your beautiful cottage and explore Shepherdstown and all of its history and beauty. Keith and Tari, thank you so very much for your hospitality and sharing your beautiful cottage with us! We will be returning!
We stayed for an extended weekend in mid-September 2014. The owner was prompt in replying to emails and arranging for the rental. The cottage is modern, comfortable, and very well maintained and equipped. It was apparent that the owner has taken considerable care in anticipating guests' needs.
We had the opportunity to spend a long weekend here and it was absolutely wonderful! Our son graduated from Shepherd University and we needed a place to stay that was convenient. We didn't expect to find such a beautiful and perfectly situated spot. Tari and Keith have a gorgeous property and we sure appreciate them sharing it with us. We actually stayed in "the loft" since the cottage was unavailable. I was a little apprehensive about the loft but they sure do make it a lovely stay. It is decorated charmingly appropriate. It is situated so perfectly you don't even realize it is part of the main house.
We expected to see some wildlife but were delighted with the frequency of their presence. One night we counted at least 12 deer. We watched them from the living room, also, turkeys.
I wish we would have had more time to stay. I hope to get the opportunity again to visit the region, stay at Perchasta Farm. I would certainly recommend this property to anyone needing a comfortable, beautiful but convenient home base for your vacation to the area.
Tari and Keith were a delight to work with. I just can’t say enough about Perchasta Farm. Thank you, Tari for everything. It was too short but wonderful.
We actually stayed in the Loft apartment attached to the main house since the cottage was rented. I am not an easy person to please, but it gets an A+++. Everything about the place was excellent. It is on a beautiful serene property set away from the main road. There are walking trails on the property with lots of blackberry bushes just waiting to ripen and be picked. The owners encourage you to pick them as well as the veggies from their garden. On arrival there was a jar of honey from their apiary, yummy. I brought my dog and they welcomed him. The loft was decorated beautifully. It could have been the centerfold for Better Homes and Gardens. They thought of every detail and amenity. It had a bedroom with a queen size bed and a full size bed under the eaves in the living room/kitchen area which worked out well for my girlfriend and I since we needed our separate spaces. The living room had a large picture window that looked out onto the serene property, which is a certified Tree Farm. It is just a short drive to town where there are some nice restaurants and shops. Also close to the C&O canal, great for kayaking, hiking etc. I can't wait to go back and hike, shop or just relax in one of the lawn chairs with a good book. I can't imagine how lovely the larger rental must be. If I bring some more friends we will be sure to rent that one. I am sure it is equally as nice. And, to add to the pleasant experience the owners are lovely, not intrusive but there if you need them.
We were very pleased with this property! All descriptions on the site were accurate. The owners were great hosts, there to answer any questions that we had. The area is beautiful, and there is a ton of history to see. The decor was gorgeous and very up to date. The grounds were beautiful and there were animals and nature to observe also. We would definitely stay here again!
My husband and I were looking for a comfortable place to stay near Shepherdstown. We definitely found the perfect place with the Perchasta Cottage. We always travel with two well behaved dogs, so a location that allows pets and has lots of outdoor opportunities to walk the dogs is a priority. The cottage is incredibly close to Shepherdstown, a couple of minutes drive and you are downtown. The location is very quiet and beautifully situated on the tree farm. Right away we felt at home in this cottage. It is not only pretty, but also very well layed out, easy to get around and enough space to just comfortably hang out. We arrived when the weather was very cold, so we got to really enjoy the perfectly decorated and furnished cottage. The bedrooms are both very nice size, have beautiful beds with excellent mattresses and bedding. The kitchen is fairly large with every one could wish for. The whole cottage appears to be new and everything is impecably taken care of. The garage is a great feature, one can enter it directly from the house. There are several great restaurants in Shepherdstown, an absolut must is brunch at the Bavarian Inn. We will certainly return again to this wonderful cottage, thank you for making our stay so enjoyable!
