Speaking of fun in the sun how about grabbing the gang for a picnic or BBQ at Reid State Park. Today, thousands of visitors enjoy the park's long, wide sand beaches like Mile and Half Mile, which are rare in Maine. Enjoyed as a recreational resource, the beaches are also essential nesting areas for endangered least terns and piping plovers and resting and feeding areas for other shorebirds. Rarer than beaches along Maine's coast are large sand dunes, like those at Reid. From the top of Griffith Head, a rocky headland overlooking the park, you can view sweeping seascapes and spot the lighthouses on Seguin Island, The Cuckolds, and Hendricks Head. You can also see several islands, including: Damariscove, a thriving fishing community in Colonial times.
Your vacation in Maine wouldn't be complete without a visit to Boothbay Harbour. A mere forty-one miles from Orr's Island, a visit to this region can be whatever you want it to be: a peaceful time to refresh your soul, an active time boating, fishing, hiking, playing golf and tennis, or a family adventure. Explore quiet coves, rocky shores, meandering country roads, and beautiful lighthouses. The restaurants are plentiful and varied, and the food is delicious. The salt air isn't the only thing that's refreshing. Explore one of more than a dozen nature trails, try out there worldclass golf course, or experience some of the best sea kayaking available anywhere. There harbor bustles with fishing vessels and pleasure craft in equal numbers, and nothing beats the sight of the schooners heading in from the afternoon trip with their sails bathed in the rosy light of a spectacular sunset – unless of course you're lucky enough to be on board! Note to self...'Must go on a Whale Watching tour!'
However, you needn't go far to have fun. Why not visit pristeen Wiscasset village, just a forty minute drive away for some antiqueing, or how about lunch at the famous Reds right on the river! It is such a beautiful peaceful place with so much to offer. It was also my childhood home and I always wanted to have a home here on Orr's Island again.
You'll wake every morning to beautiful ocean views, your own semi-private patio furnished with a fire pit to warm yourself by and a gas grill for your outside dining pleasure. Minutes from Landsend gift shop on Bailey Island, restaurants & cafes, the famous Cribstone Bridge, and many other spectacular scenic locations. Only a 15-20 minute ride to downtown Brunswick for shopping, restaurants, antiqueing, grocery stores, theatre & movie cinema's.
My wife, our pets Eli and India and I stayed at the Sheacliff apartment on Orr's Island during the end of July, beginning of August, 2014. What a delightful, clean, beautifully appointed, comfy and well situated accommodation this is. It's just a few minutes walk to the picturesque Lowell's Cove, where we walked almost every morning, and a point of departure for touring the Maine coast along Orr's and Bailey islands, Harpswell and further afield to Freeport, Bath, Brunswisck and Damariscotta. Our hosts Shirley, Kevin and Mark made us feel at home. Do sound out Mark for his recommendations on where to eat locally on Orr's and Bailey islands, as well as farther afield. All of his recommendations were spot on for value, taste, and service. Two recommendations with particularly gorgeous views are the Dolphin Marina and Restaurant and Estes Lobster House with its lobster specials. And for some of the most inventive and delicious tavern fare we've ever had, drive over to Damariscotta and King Eider's Pub. We highly recommend Sheacliff and would happily pay a return visit whenever we stay on the mid Maine coast.
This place is close enough to major attractions and far enough from the hustle to be perfect for a relaxing trip. Lobsters available right down the street to cook in your own nice little kitchen. We'll kept and clean. Owners are very courteous and anxious to help you enjoy your vacation. A few hundred feet walk to the water. Portland is almost an hour drive. Reid's state park is almost an hour and has an incredible beach. Five islands lobster co is right by Reid park and was great. I can recommend pretty much all of the restaraunts within 20 miles, except cooks... We also did a guided, evening sea kayak with h2outfitters which was great.
This was one of the best vacation our family has had. The property is beautifully located. My kids and I were on the beach everyday to find sea glass and shells. Shirley and Mark were fantastic hosts. We felt very welcome. Mark helped us with a lot of local information. The property is even more beautiful than the pictures. It was very clean and organized and had all that we needed to make our stay comfortable. When there, you must visit Bailey Island and eat at the Cribstone Bar & Grill because they carry the best Maine Blueberry pie, which is made by Shirley. We are so happy we chose to stay at Sheacliff. We definitely hope to stay there again and have already told our friends to do the same.
This property was exactly as described/photographed on the website. All three of us (adults), traveling together, immediately noticed how clean it was. The apartment had everything we needed to enjoy the week away from home. The owners were warm and welcoming and we felt right at home whether we were in the apartment or relaxing in the chairs on the patio. We enjoyed walks to the water's edge and around the island. It is also a perfect place to stay for getting out and seeing the area - among other things, our trips included Freeport (shopping), Bath, Boothbay Harbor (whale watching), Portland (Island Cruise), Popham Beach (gathering sand dollars), and on a crazy whim, Bar Harbor - a long drive, but we were glad we did it. We can't wait to return to Sheacliff.
We didn't have strong cell signals - but that was a blessing, as it helped us disconnect! The Internet connection was fine.
Thanks so much for a wonderful week away.
This place was really charming. Small, but well laid out, it was plenty for our family of 4. It abuts a small cove (Flag Cove) in Lowell's Cove. My kids loved going to the little cove to catch fish and crabs in the tide pools every morning, and we still could get out to the other precious little spots all throughout the mid-coast. I can strongly recommend the Hardy Boat puffin trip out of New Harbor, this great coffee shop at Front and Centre in Bath, Popham Beach (especially Percy's General Store), Reid State Park and the Salt Cod Cafe right on Orr's Island. Suffice to say, my 5 year old had a meltdown about leaving on the last morning there.
This charming accommodation lives up to the advertised description and pictures. It is clean, well-maintained and quiet. The owners are friendly and helpful and had great advice about local restaurants and attractions. If you're looking for a quiet, problem-free rental property - this is it!
