This is a cottage in the private beach community in the Primehook National Wildlife Refuge which has over 8,000 acres of untouched beauty. The community is 5 miles off Route 1 and is relaxed!
You can swim and fish right in front of the house; you can be on the beach at anytime (sleep on it if you like) and may have a bonfire in the evening if it's not too windy! As mentioned previously, we have a new patio where you can grill, eat and view the beach as well as enjoy the late afternoon breeze.
The cottage has three bedrooms but can accommodate additional sleepers via couch, day bed, and air mattress.
10 minutes to Lewes; 20 minutes to Rehoboth and Dewey beaches if you want shopping (outlets and small, unique stores), movies, restaurants, jet ski, bike rentals, etc.
Keywords: 3Br/1Ba Beach cottage, new AC/Heat, new windows, new septic. Right on beach. Can have bonfires on beach, sleep on beach, etc. Dogs can be off-leash.
My husband grew up in Milton, DE which is the next town over. We live north of Baltimore and wanted a getaway and eventually a place to retire!
Sandy Zelensky purchased this cottage in 1999
Primehook beach is quiet and the people are friendly. It is away from hustle and bustle but you can drive to get anything you want in about 10-20 minutes.
We enjoy the privacy and quiet. It is also a safe place for kids to be able to ride their bikes, swim, walk the beach, etc.
Also stayed in August 2010.
We very much enjoyed our time here! Our welsh terrier loved the beach.
We loved it there! It was just the right size for my husband, our dog, and me. We plan to go back there again next year!
We really enjoyed our long weekend at this cottage hugging the dune and right on the beach. You can't beat it's location and ease of access.
Some of the things we just loved: big, new windows looking right into the dune/bay and out to the side to the beach; the big flat-screen TV - wow; great wifi; sleeping on the daybed in the sun room - what a lovely place to wake up; comfortable glider chair in sun room (perfect for my elderly mother); the accessibility for my mother who uses a rolling walker and a regular walker; terrific new patio with views to both bay and wildlife refuge; being able to bring our dog - so, so fantastic; owner's quick response to my questions and calls; friendly, helpful neighbors.
This is a simple, rustic cottage with some updates. The kitchen and its equipment are basic. The furniture a mix of old/worn and new. No closets. No washer/dryer. No dishwasher. This didn't bother us. If you need and require sleek luxury or more than basic amenities, don't come here.
If you want sky, water, dunes, beach, quiet, fresh air, birds (I've never seen so many blue herons and egrets in one place), simple pleasures, no stairs, and a place where you can bring your dog, then this is the place for you!
Thanks! We had a wonderful time. This place was fantastic with kids and a dog. It was so easy to get in and out on the beach and have a relaxing family vacation. It's also a great location to be able to easily get down to Lewes or Funland at Rehobeth. The kitchen is well stocked with cookware for easy dinners and the kids loved discovering the various games and books in the house.
We loved staying in your cottage! The Prime Hook Nature Preserve is such a gem! The cottage was perfectly comfortable for my husband, my son and I. For a couple of nights, our daughter and her boyfriend joined us too. We fished, we kayaked, we skimmed, we tanned and we relaxed! What a wonderful getaway, hidden behind much farm land. Thank you! We hope to rent your cottage again soon!
Fondly, Ken and Cynthia
The house is small and compact, but has everything that is needed for a fun relaxing vacation. We were a little disappointed to not have a tv (maybe we didn't try hard enough to figure out how to use it). The bed in the main bedroom and the daybed were not comfortable. The major problem was that the last people to use the home had a cat that peed in the same spot and smelled the whole house up. Someone tried to clean it up (at the end of the stay) so we came to a house with a big wet spot in it. The disgusting smell was everywhere and stayed for at least 3 days pretty bad. We bought something to take the smell away and kept cleaning the spot. Also there was dog hair /cat hair everywhere/ One of our grandchildren is allergic to dog and cat hair so we had to buy something to clean the hair up immediately. So we ended up having to clean the house and work at getting rid of the smell several days. There are several loose tiles in the bathroom that should be taken care of before the tiles are broken and cannot be used. The grass looks pretty roudy. We loved the area.
This was my first time renting a house/cottage on the beach. I was very apprehensive and did not know what to expect. Well this was the best experience ever and I will be back next year. My girls and I had such a wonderful, relaxing time and the cottage was cozy and quaint. We actually went to Rehobath beach for the day and the girls wanted to go back to prime hook! We loved all the wildlife which made my mornings runs breathtaking. We will be back!
Because Prime Hook is a national wildlife refuge, there are lots of birds that migrate through. You can bird watch on the road coming in to the beach area; visit the small museum at the Prime Hook NWR headquarters; launch boats and canoes there and use the photography blind to take wildlife photos. You can also launch boats up at Slaughter Beach, about 7-10 miles away.
