Photos and Description of the Chestertown vacation house rental
No LONGER AVAILABLE

The intersection of land and water is usually a very magical place. OUR SHORE THING is just such a venue. Your hosts searched their whole adult lives for a lakefront vacation home that offered solitude while at the same time was close to modern conveniences. This house, unlike most other lake vacation homes, affords renters a high degree of privacy coupled with the accessibility of civilization within a matter of minutes.

OUR SHORE THING is a three year old, 900 square feet three story house, situated on beautiful Augur Lake at the eastern edge of New York’s Adirondack State Park. The house is a few miles from the Northway (Interstate 87) in Keeseville, NY.

Our lakeside cottage sits on approximately 3 acres of forested land that winds its way to over 490 feet of Augur Lake shoreline. The lake itself is approximately 400 acres in size and contains NO PUBLIC ACCESS and NO PUBLIC BOAT RAMPS. In short, this body of water is used by only a handful of lucky Augur Lake property owners. The lake’s water quality is good and is stocked with smallmouth bass, yellow perch, walleye, northern pike and black crappie.

If you are looking for rowdy parties, the bar scene and tee shirt shops, this is NOT the lake for you. Instead, we offer tranquility, beauty and a chance to get away from the maddening crowds. Our quaint cottage is perfect for couples or small families looking to combine lakeside living with the conveniences of a new house.

Whether you choose to sip your coffee on the wrap around porch, read a book in the screened in lakefront gazebo, or just breathe in the fresh air while wandering the property, guests here at OUR SHORE THING will not see another home in sight, except for those homes located on the other side of the lake.

OUR SHORE THING offers new appliances such as a full size oven and microwave oven as well as a washer and dryer. The kitchen is equipped with newer refrigerator, a coffee maker, toaster and all the utensils that you have in your own home. A queen size bed and walk in closet awaits guests in the master bedroom. Upstairs in the loft area, the kids will sleep soundly in two twin beds. Lastly, a full size futon with a brand new mattress in the living room offers the opportunity for two additional guests to enjoy the comforts of this house.

A one car garage with direct access to the house allows guests to keep their car warm and dry on those cool summer mornings. The bathroom offers a walk in shower warmed by a tank-less water heater as well as a new commode and sink. The cottage is equipped with a charcoal barbecue grill for those summer time cookouts. Guests are invited to use our dock that extends into Augur Lake and to make use of our kayak to explore the lake or catch some of the many types of fish that populate this body of water.

OUR SHORE THING is situated on a county maintained paved road and is less than ten minutes away from both a grocery store and hardware store.

Speaking of short distances, a fifteen minute drive from ONE SHORE THING will bring guests to the either the Harmony Golf Club or the Adirondack Golf and Country Club. Fifteen minutes will also take you to the Ausable Chasm where guests can rides horses or tube down the Ausable River. In that same time frame, guests can drive to Lake Champlain and board the Port Kent Ferry which will transport guests and their vehicles to Burlington, Vermont, home of the University of Vermont and Burlington International Airport (BTV). From Burlington, numerous highways connect to the rest of historic New England.

A twenty minute drive from OUR SHORE THING will take guests to Plattsburgh, NY, home to a regional mall, a large campus of the State University of New York and the Plattsburgh International Airport (PLB).

A thirty mile drive from the cottage will take guests to the majestic alpine village of Lake Placid, New York, home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics as well as the charming community of Saranac Lake.

A mere 80 miles to the North of OUR SHORE THING lies the captivating European inspired city of Montreal, Quebec (bring your passports). Eighty miles to the South lies the summer tourist Mecca of Lake George, NY (bring comfortable walking shoes).

We invite you to enjoy OUR SHORE THING for some well deserved relaxation and rejuvenation. Use the cottage to recharge your batteries in a truly peaceful setting or use it as a centrally located base for exciting day-trips to New England, Canada or the Adirondack State Park. Either way, we think you will love this house, this lake and this region as much as we do.

Adorable house, great spot on a gorgeous lake!!

First, everything about the house is just as advertised. There were 4 of us that stayed, 2 couples, and it worked out really well for us. I would only recommend this type of arrangement for close friends or family, since we all had to share a bathroom, but we did just fine with it!

The house is cute and cozy. We were happy to find wine glasses in the kitchen and we used them a few times! We spent a lot of our time away from the house (kayaking on the Saranc River, climbing Mt Marcy, visiting the AuSable Chasm, paddle boarding down the AuSable River to Lake Champlain, eating and shopping at Lake George) but we did spend a very enjoyable day on Augur Lake one of the days.

The 1 person kayak (not a good fit for anyone over 5'8") and the 3 man canoe that are available for renters were great!!! To our surprise, they were new and very nice. We paddled all over the lake and had a nice time visiting one of the little islands in the middle, which we explored and swam from. The weather was perfect but we only saw one fishing boat on the lake and a few people on the shore, it truly is VERY private and quiet. We saw the camp that was mentioned in another post, but heard and saw no activity from there. We slept with our windows open and I didn't hear any traffic or road noise at all.

One night we made a campfire and roasted marshmallows (and had more wine!). I would recommend getting everything set up, including carrying extra chairs down to the lake, while its still daylight. Don't forget to take the flashlights charging in the wall with you! And the trek down to the lake is a pretty steep one, but worth it!

Another great and really fun feature were the cds of fun old school music and the stereo system. We especially enjoyed "Queens Greatest Hits"! There was also a good selection of dvds to choose from and we watched a movie or two. While there is no internet or wi-fi, I did have a strong Verizon phone signal and we had no problem using our iphones and ipads with the Verizon serice.

Overall, we had a fantastic time in the Adirondacks (my first time) and we can't wait to make it back up there sometime soon! I would highly recommend staying at "Our Shore Thing" if you decide to take a similar trip.

Excellent Secluded Family Setting - Great Get-a-Way for the Family who wants to be together

First and foremost, thanks to the owners who opened up their home to my family. Upon arrival you find a beautiful cottage on 3 acres that is very well appointed. We did not feel cramped and the cottage has every amenity of home. We wanted to have a vacation for our family alone, to play games, fish, and enjoy our own company and found it at "Our Shore Thing". If you are looking for noise or crowds, this is not the place for you. If you want to spend quality time with your wife and children, then you found a Great Place at Auger Lake. The lake was beautiful and fishing was excellent. You are 40 minutes from Lake Placid and one of our best events was the Ausable Chasm Tube ride which is 10 minutes away. The owner's were very accomodating and the real estate agent who assisted us was excellent. Lastly, if a future guest finds the "stress" I left behind, they can keep it or just throw it away.

Arrival at the camp was perfect. Check-in was simple and taken care of by email so arrival could happen at our convenience. We spent 4 wonderful days exploring the lake and enjoying the spectacular seclusion and privacy offered at this wonderful hidden gem. Highlights of our stay included deer in the lawn, star-filled skies by the campfire at the water's edge and catching/eating bass, sunfish, and pike we had caught ourselves. The camp is clean, comfortable and new construction. We hiked local trails, explored AuSable Chasm, and visited near-by Lake Placid and it's famous Olympic venues.
Our favorite part of each day was simply relaxing on the porch and listening to nothing but the sounds of birds and nature all around us. We are already planning our next trip back to the cabin next season.

Not what was promised!

I'll start by saying that the place is clean, new and well kept. There ends the positives! I specifically asked the realitor if the highway could be heard from the property, and she reassured me that it could only be heard on foggy days with the wind blowing from the east! Ha! it was sunny and calm all week and thats all we heard was traffic, From everywhere on the lake!! And the girls camp accross the lake had nightly kareoke parties which echoed throughout the lake. The lake access was poorly maintained, with several huge logs laying in the water making it very difficult to launch a canoe from the shore. Also although the property is techinically lake front, it sits on a steep hill quite a walk up from the lake. You cannot really see the lake from the cabin either. One of the best things about staying in the adk is nightly camp fires, however the fire pit is at the waters edge, which made it impossible to have a fire at night and expect to find your way up the steep hill to the cabin. We were assured by the realitor that we would be able to paddle out to islands in the lake and swim, however the entire lake was so weed choked that we never once went in the water, very disappointing. And finally, when we arrived at the cabin, we were unable to open the lock box that contained the key!! Seems the realitor emailed me the wrong lock combination! I called her several times, but i got no response!!! Finally after trying several different combinations, we were able to to discover the right combination! She never called to find out if everything was OK, probably too embarassed. And the water pressure was bearly a trickle in the kitchen, so we did dishes in the bathroom! Plus theres this huge wrap around porch for sitting on, but there are only 2 chairs!! I dont mind roughing it and have done so many times, but at the price I paid I expected more, and at least I expected honesty. Next time I'll just trust my own judgement.

Owner's Response: Dear Randy,

We have 24hr access to emergency needs at all rental properties. Calls that arrive to the emergency number are responded to within the hour. Once an issue has been resolved, the renter is assumed to be enjoying their time at the facility, especially if there are no further calls. Regarding the accidental transposition of two numbers in the code you received for the lock box, you phoned me within 20mins to let me know you had opened the box and were settling in fine. Augur Lake is one of the quietest, most relaxing locations in the Adirondacks. There is a summer camp located on the lake, but no one has ever commented or complained about the the sounds coming from the camp. There is also very little if any noise from any roads on the lake, as attested to by so many happy renters in the past. The lake does have some weeds, but all lakes in the mountains deal with some type of weeds and the weed issues are a bit more this year then some due to warmer temps and lower water levels. Fishing and swimming are great in the lake and many vacationers water ski and swim daily in the lake, hence the ideal location for an exclusive summer youth camp. Water pressure in the house is absolutely normal given a well water source and not city water. This unit is set up for no more then 4 occupants. There is a hill from the camp down to the water's edge, however the trail is clear and renters planning to stay at the water's edge after dark should plan to use common sense and take a flashlight to help light their way back up the path in the dark to the cabin. The cabin comes equipped with THREE flashlights located in the kitchen, living room and lower level of the unit. Vacationers would be wise to plan for their outdoor adventures in the mountains of the Adirondacks rather then simply expect urban style lighting, parking, paved paths and concierge service. We would urge prospective renters to read all review submissions and call for references from happy tenants if there are concerns based on one disappointed traveler.
Signed,
Sue Carter

Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely house. We had a wonderful visit. we really enjoyed paddling the canoe around the lake and we even caught a bunch of fish. The views from the canoe in the middle of the lake are fabulous, but then again so are the views from the gazebo and the dock. This place is so quiet and peaceful it was perfect for us to spend a nice relaxing vacation.
We did not explore in Plattsburg at all but we recommend the following for the future visitors: canoeing around the lake (watch for the great Blue Heron and check out the islands), Fishing at sunset (even just around the dock we caught small fish), watching themoon rise from the gazebo.

Thanks again!
