|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
This house is located at a 4000 foot elevation in the mountains near Kings Canyon National Park and borders the Giant Sequoia National Monument. This is a ridgetop location on 10 acres with hiking, fishing, boating, and horseback riding close by. The uniqueness lies in the mountain views, many black oak and manzanita trees, and dark night skies. If you seek privacy and comfort in the midst of an oak woodland landscape, this is the place for you.
HOT TUB is currently out of order, but will be repaired when drought conditions subside.

About us... Cindy and Dan Duriscoe, the owners of the property, want your stay to be as enjoyable as possible. We are former employees of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and we want to share our knowledge with you. We purchased the property in 1997 and lived here almost 10 years. We know the land, and we did most of the work on the property ourselves. We are constantly making improvements as time allows, and we welcome suggestions. Do not hesitate to inquire about the parks, the monument, and other attractions in the area. We know that this piece of land offers something special at all seasons (Dan's favorite is actually winter). We have watched the land and sky from here, and the peacefulness of the location is unmatched. Both of us enjoy hiking, backpacking, X-country skiing in the Sierra. Cindy loves horseback riding and snowshoeing on nearby trails.

This part of California is known for its mild climate, calm winds and stable air most of the time (which makes for wonderful observations of the night sky through a telescope), fall colors of the black oaks (some seasons are more intense than others), and the elevational gradient that allows quick access to a variety of life zones. We think this location is ideally located for access to the high country and foothills, and gives a taste of both. The peace and quiet, walking among our own manzanita woodlands cannot be experienced elsewhere.
Taking walks on the property and neighboring monument lands. Watching the sunset while enjoying a glass of wine. Observing the night sky or a sunrise from the hot tub. Mountain biking or horseback riding on nearby trails. The community of people is very friendly and helpful when work needs to be done. Wintertime can be very peaceful and majestic walking roads and trails, making wildlife observations, just plain having fun in the snow!
What a great way to wrap up a three week California adventure. We had fun exploring the parts of the park that are still open (hiked the Redwood Canyon loop and braved some icy spots to get to the incredible views on Little Baldy), and loved coming "home" to this amazing house. There is nothing better than a hot tub under the stars after a day of hiking. We hope to be able to come back one day!
This property exceeded our expectations. The owners were very responsible to all our questions and very easy to work with. Kim is the local caretaker who stop by to make sure everything was in order. The unit was impressively clean and stocked with everything we needed. The view was amazing and we really enjoyed our stay. The drive to the location is an adventure with all the switchbacks. We always made sure we will back "home" home in the light of day. It was our first experience with a "swamp cooler" instead of a traditional AC unit and it worked out great. I would stay again and I would recommend the unit. I would consider it a short drive to the entrance of the King Canyon portion of the two National parks.
Thanks for allowing us to stay at the Redwood Mountain View Lodge. This was great. We were able to stay altogether comfortably as a family and do things on our own time. The property is remote yet not too far out. Clean and comfortable. The property manager Kim was a wealth of knowledge and very helpful. Thank you so much. We had deer bedded down on the front lawn one morning. just an all around peaceful place. I hope to get back here one day.
A nice property in a superb location, with excellent views of the Sierra Nevada. The property was well maintained and clean, and the janitor was extremely helpful, as was the owner in responding to questions about the house before we went. The photos and description were all accurate, but the hot tub was not working while we were there (we had been warned about this but it was of no concern to us since we were there for the sightseeing). The wifi was very useful, but the telephone connection for outgoing calls was intermittent. This was of little concern to us. The area was very quiet and peaceful, and the birdwatching was excellent! There are no really close 'activities, attractions, and restaurants' - that is the beauty of the place. However it is ideally placed for visiting Sequoia and Kings Canyon NPs. I would unreservedly recommend it to other travellers to the area.
As far as the property is concerned, the location is scenic, peaceful and wonderful and the home is HUGE. Our family of four found it far more space than we needed - There were rooms we didn't even enter. The kitchen is also very well stocked with spices and other incidentals that are great to have, but that you might not otherwise want to buy for a short stay. The owners (and prior guests) were exceedingly generous with what they left behind (and we added to that when we left as well). Making and eating meals here was very enjoyable.
The place is a little hard to get to because it's so remotely located, but miles of scary switchbacks are normal here, so it's nothing different than the rest of the area driving. Just be prepared for very tight turns, drive slowly, during daytime only and you should be fine. (A 4WD would be comforting, especially for the steep driveway, but it's not essential.)
The only negative with this place is that the owners are VERY slow communicators. It took days to hear back from them whenever I sent a message, which was especially disconcerting when it came to checkout instructions and return of the mandatory deposit. Considering how fast most other VRBO owners reply back and how interested other owners are in ensuring that their guests have easy stays, this was rather irritating. (Also, be aware that the "spa features" -- aka hot tub -- may not be working (it was broken for our stay), and that there is no phone or internet service provided (despite the fact that it is advertised). You can get a signal from the home, but it will be on your data plan, with possibly hefty roaming fees, not the home's (non-existent) wifi. (The owners sent a message a fews days after I had checked out -- but not when I reported the problem -- saying that the caretaker didn't know how to reset the phone and wifi. I don't consider that much of an excuse, and certainly it's not an apology, as that's clearly a problem with their rental home that they aware of but haven't bothered to fix.)
All in all it was a good place to stay -- but it could have been SO much better if the owners had been more responsive to the email messages I sent.
As a family of 5 this was a great house to stay in. There was plenty of room to relax, sleep, eat and even laundry facilities. Our one surprise was how windy the road is to and from the house. However, that did not detract from our stay. The house was clean, well maintain, and both the owner and manager checked with us several times to make sure we had all we needed. I would recommend this house to someone looking for a homebase near the park entrance. Keep in mind that this is not the Hilton, it is a mountain home. Go with a mind on that and you'll have a great time.
We had a very relaxed week here and would recommend it for any similar visitors - families with children. The location is great and the service from the owners and their local contact could not be faulted. It is ideally located for visiting the national park. The relatively remote location means you should stock up on your way which we were advised to do.
