In the early 1900's, when the main residence was constructed in an existing pear orchard, Carmel Valley was primarily agricultural. Today, Carmel Valley is dotted with homes, farms, ranches, vineyards shopping and restaurants. In the early 1900's, the property consisted of a Craftman-style main residence and at least four other structures, including the existing barn and a summer kitchen. From the time we acquired the property in 1993, we have worked to restore the property's elements to their original beauty while incorporating modern comforts. The Guest Cottage has been re-purposed from the former summer kitchen structure, retaining the history and charm of California history while offering cozy accommodations in a rural environment.

Owners Linda and Larry Wheaton have resided in Carmel Valley since Larry retired from a computer sales and marketing career. Larry grew up in the Monterey area and hiked over the hills separating Monterey and Carmel Valley as a kid. 'I quickly discovered that the best summer time micro-climate on the Peninsula was in Carmel Valley. So when I retired, Carmel Valley was the place we wanted to live'.
Linda Wheaton purchased this cottage in 1993
We purchased our Farm House and out-buildings in Carmel Valley's in 1993 We were drawn to the location because of it's proximity to recreation, mountain views and weather. We have lovingly remodeled, replanted and rebuilt the gardens and updated the out-buildings much the way they were in the 1920's. Our children and grand-children now come here to ride the tractor, pick tomatoes, apples, apricots and otherwise enjoy the clear fresh air. Our guest cottage is the last out-building to be remodeled and is now our vacation rental.
Our location is close to Carmel-by-the-Sea but also is just minutes to Monterey Bay Aquarium, Fisherman's Wharf, Pacific Grove and Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca. Jefferies, our favorite breakfast and lunch hang-out, is two minutes away while the Carmel Valley Coffee Roasting Company is just as close. But the larger Monterey County area is really what attracts people from all over the world. You can relax on our Guest Cottage Patio, resting from a busy day (eating an hors d'oeuvre you made with fresh tomatoes from the garden), and in 8 minutes be sitting at the piano bar at Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch wondering what to have for dinner.
My husband, myself, and our 6 month old son stayed 4 nights at the Rose Cottage. We were instantly charmed by the property and absolutely loved the cottage. It was clean, super cute and cozy, and a perfect place to come "home" to after a day of hiking and exploring the area. Waking up to a view of the mountains out the windows and sitting with a cup of coffee outside on the lawn chairs was fabulous. Linda and Larry were great hosts and we enjoyed chatting with them. There is tons to do and see around the area and we very much enjoyed our time in the Carmel/Monterey area. Another big plus was the aquarium passes, which we took advantage of and had a ton of fun there. Overall, a fabulous experience!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Rose Cottage. It is an extremely well equipped and comfortable cottage and has clearly been a labour of love for Larry and Linda who were excellent hosts, always friendly and approachable but giving us plenty of privacy. We thoroughly enjoyed our chats with them.
There was ample space for the two of us inside the lovely bright cottage and we also very much appreciated the patio table and chairs outside the front door where we enjoyed eating breakfast whilst watching the numerous birds in the garden. The outdoor fireplace and barbecue were well-used and conducive to wonderfully relaxed evenings. We would love to build one in our own garden if only the weather here was slightly less damp and cold!
We enjoy hiking and there was no shortage of lovely scenic places to visit. We very much enjoyed Point Lobos, Andrew Molera State Park, Garrapata State Park, Point Sur (thoroughly recommend the lighthouse tour) and Garland Ranch. All were easily accessible from Rose Cottage. We also spent a great day at the Monterey aquarium (thank you Linda and Larry for the use of the passes) and travelled north to see more sea otters and sealions at Moss Landing and the coastal redwoods at Henry Cowell park.
We could quite happily have sat in the garden at Rose Cottage and relaxed for the whole week but never having visited the area before, wanted to explore a fair bit. We couldn't have asked for a better base for our travels. Thank you!
Linda and Larry were absolutely wonderful. They gave us tips on places to visit, had guest passes to the aquarium (which we didn't even realize when we booked!), and set up an incredible place to visit. The home is located off of a fairly main road but separated by a gate, which is great. The guest cottage was the perfect size for us and the interior was exactly what we were looking for — cute, quaint, comfortable (love those sheets!), and idyllic.
Couldn't recommend staying here enough. It served as the perfect home base for our adventures out to Big Sur, Carmel, and Monterey.
Delightful spot and delightful owners. You can do no better.
I stayed here during a recent visit to Carmel for a wedding. The place was awesome. Beautiful and cozy cottage, awesome property with great views, and a friendly environment with outdoor lounging areas and a grill. Also, a hedge providing privacy from the main house and plenty of parking. It has great accessibility to both Carmel Valley Ranch as well as getting back into town.
We had a great Thanksgiving weekend stay at the Rose Cottage in Carmel Valley. It is a perfect place for a couple, tastefully decorated on a beautiful property in the middle Carmel Valley - the hosts are incredibly welcoming and gracious - it felt like visiting friends and family. I would recommend it to anyone visiting the Carmel area, especially those who want to stay in the quiet, great weathered Carmel Valley!
