PRIVATE, SERENE, WOODED RETREAT OVERLOOKING LAKE AND MOUNTAIN

Kent House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Den, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Private and serene, this fully furnished and equipped mid-century ranch is built into the mountain, and faces due west, across the street from a private lake covered with lily pads, and a mountain beyond that. Recently renovated, this incredibly bright and sun-filled 2-bedroom, 2-bath, with additional den/children's room, is a great four-season getaway, with colors and views that change with each season.

In the great room, relax on comfortable couches from which to enjoy the brick fireplace, the sky from the 2 skylights, and the view of trees and green outside the wall of windows (in the summer, you can just see the water shimmering through the dense foliage!). Dining area seats 6. Master bedroom has private bath with whirlpool jets and 2nd bathroom has 'surround-slate' shower. Open kitchen with skylight, breakfast bar, and morning room picture window, and rocking chairs. Windows and hardwood floors throughout, including bathrooms; kitchen and foyer is tiled. The house is equipped with modern appliances, and there is free WIFI.

And a fantastic recent feature: the front foyer has been turned into a music room with the addition of an antique baby grand piano, in superb condition. Enjoy playing for yourself while looking out the picture window to the woods; or entertain your friends in the great room or with a sing-along.

Wrap-around deck with new gas-grill, picnic table, and comfortable chairs with cushions, chaises longues, and a hammock from which to read, nap, or just relax. The stone patio was installed by the owner herself.

Listen to the daytime songs of birds and let the nighttime symphony of frogs, cicadas, and crickets lull you to sleep. Other than a passing car or motorcycle, it's very quiet - sometimes all you hear is the wind in the trees.

Situated in NE Dutchess County, this vacation home is close to a myriad of activities: great shopping and dining in Kent, CT, and Millbrook, NY; nurseries in Sharon, Ct; antiquing throughout Dutchess and Litchfield Counties; outdoor activities at Kent Falls; Macedonia and Housatonic State Parks; Mohawk Mountain Ski Area; Thunder Ridge Skiing; Limerock NASCAR Speedway; Rail trail for biking; Appalachian Trail. Great country roads for motorcycling and driving; day camps; and swimming at Dover Plains and Millerton pools. Plan now for fall foliage season - dates available - as well as for skiing, snowboarding, and winter activities in the area.

Or...just stay home and enjoy a sense of peace and calm.

A residential real estate broker in New York City, I enjoy all the amenities the City offers - theater, restaurants, shopping. I usually take my 1971 vintage FIAT 500L to appointments, and spend a lot of time with my Australian Cattle Dogs. I'm very involved in dog rescue, especially Australian Cattle Dogs (AKA Blue and Red Heelers) - helping where I can to foster, transport, and fund saving dogs especially from kill shelters and abusive situations, and to find them safe havens, and hopefully 'forever' homes. My three dogs, Argos (red), just turned 15, Friday (blue), 5, and Astro (blue), 5, were from shelters. All purebred, they came to me as fosters and decided to stay. Friday has 3 legs and was found on a dark country road in Georgia. Astro was 1 hour from being put to sleep, but amazing efforts from many people saved his life. And Argos is a wonderful boy, and now a senior citizen.

Squad - English, Francais, Italiano, and Espanol purchased this house in 2004

In my business, I'm always in the hustle and bustle of the City and the excitement of real estate. A few years ago, I decided I wanted a place where I could decompress and recharge my batteries, and where my dogs could have some room to play. I searched for a property within 2 hours of downtown Manhattan that had a fireplace. That was my minimum requirement! Instead, I found a phenomenal location, a short way up a mountain, overlooking Bog Hollow covered with lily pads and with a little island in the middle. One of the first times I was there, I saw a deer on the island; and another time, I heard the cry of geese and looked up to see them flying in their perfect 'V' formation. As a city girl, this exposure to wildlife was a literally and figuratively a breath of fresh air.

What I love most on those rare occasions I'm there is to sit on the deck, especially in late afternoon and evening - although any time of day is wonderful - watching the light shimmer over the water, listening to the sounds of nature and slowing my mind down. On very cold winter nights, after a snow, the stars and moon are so incredibly bright that they light up the snow-covered yard. We have been doing some planting in front of the house, and it's exciting to see them grow. My friends and family love going to Kent, a very sweet New England town with charming shops and places to eat. Driving or motorcycling in the area, we find gorgeous roads and panoramas; sometimes we have to stop at the dairy farm as the cows cross the road. Roadside stands of fresh vegetables and August corn are on the honor system with a little cash box to put your payment or make change. And a little further afield are the wonderful offerings of Dutchess County and the Berkshires, with Tanglewood less than 1 1/2 hours away; skiing within 20 minutes; and all sorts of outdoor and cultural activies. But best of all, I like staying at the house, throwing a ball for the dogs, and then all of us just relaxing on the deck and taking in the view. And with the recent addition of an antique baby grand, I can now also enjoying playing the piano with the woods right outside the large picture window in the music room.

FOURTH STAY AT THIS GREAT PROPERTY!

  • 5 of 5
This is our fourth stay at this lovely home. The owner is an absolute pleasure to deal with and always makes us so comfortable and at home. The house is nicely renovated and very peaceful and quaint. Exactly what we enjoy for our weekend getaway in the country. Also a very cute little town just down the road with restaurants, a bookshop, wine store, and furniture and antique stores.

QUIET, SECLUDED, LESS THAN 2 HOURS FROM NYC

  • 4 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The house was immaculate, the gas grill and deck were lovely! Even though it was a cold early November weekend we grilled out for almost every meal. And there is a huge whirlpool tub, What a bonus! I only wish there were an outdoor hot tub and the picture would be complete.

The kitchen well-equipped and the beds very comfortable. The most remarkable thing was how quiet it was - and when I say quiet, I mean SILENT. A bit of an adjustment for two city guys, but a welcome relief for our anxious old boxer, who loved romping around the yard and lounging in front of the fireplace. All in all, a wonderful time away from the city. The owners are delightful also, and very responsive.

If you're looking for comfort and quiet less than 2 hours from Manhattan, this is the place!

GREAT HOUSE, GREAT STAY

  • 4 of 5
Stayed here with my wife, two 12-year-olds and my small dog over Columbus Day weekend. I'd like to give it 4.5 starts. Really enjoyed the house, which was expansive (especially for someone living in a Manhattan apartment), homey and warm. The setting -- the side yard, the deck, looking out toward the pond (you really cant see it too much, but you get the sense that it's there, especially from the distant honking of the geese there) -- was really lovely. Nice, big and WELL-STOCKED kitchen. That was really appreciated. The bathrooms and bedrooms were also terrific. Lots of wood for the fireplace. And Squad was such a pleasant person to work with.

One thing worth noting: The water is not potable. This really is not a big deal, but it's not mentioned on the website. A gallon or so of bottled water was provided, but it would have been good to know this when grocery shopping beforehand.

Kent is very close by and nice, though it was really crowded being Columbus Day Weekend. The IGA grocery there is quite well stock, much better than to be expected for a small town. We did have a nice hike in Macedonia Brook State Park, literally just five minutes from the house and a major asset, and a couple of nice bike rides on the road to the west of the river (i forget the name) and on the Harlem River Rail Trail leading up into Millerston, NY (a very nice town).

All in all, a very good trip.

WONDERFUL LONG WEEKEND GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful long weekend here! The area is quiet and peaceful and the property itself is a great mix of rustic and modern convenience. We were lucky enough to enjoy a light show and echoes of thunder off the mountains from a distant evening thunderstorm - spectacular! The owner was a pleasure to deal with. We will be back!

LOVELY MOUNTAIN GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5
The house is lovely, cozy and comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked and a great place to cook. The view from the deck is beautiful with mountains and pond beyond; and such a great place to relax and take in the afternoon sun (or morning) on the deck chairs and picnic table and/or grill. Squad is a wonderful host and everything was clean and ready for us when we arrived. The bedrooms are comfortable and both bathrooms beautifully renovated. We had a great time in nearby Kent, hiking the Appalachian trail and visiting the art scene in nearby Wassaic. We can't wait to come back and visit in different seasons.
