Overview

Winchester House Rental Photos and Description

4 Bedroom, 2 bath, fireplace, wood stove, all winter sports equipment!!

A Stunning Lakefront home on crystal clear, sandy bottomed, 110 acre Forest Lake at the junction of NH,VT,& MA will be your long awaited retreat in the whispering pines, shimmering lakes, and beautiful foliage of New Hampshire. Bring the kids & dogs or just enjoy by yourselves. The Great room with 25' high natural pine cathedral ceiling, skylights, entertainment center and fireplace is comfortably, casually, and uniquely furnished. Fall Foliage time is spectacular, both around the lake and on the many scenic drives nearby.

It looks out over the pristine Forest Lake that lends itself to a memorable vacation with family and friends. A fully equipped gourmet kitchen that incorporates a Jennair oven/range/grill, refrigerator/icemaker and dishwasher with all utensils, equipment, spices, condiments, etc. will make it difficult to try the eclectic restaurants in Keene, New Hampshire or historic Brattleboro, Vermont nearby.

The Four Bedrooms are 2 Queen beds, a Double, and the 4 season sun-porch with 2 single beds & Queen hide a bed (Great kid or teen suite with their own TV and VCR) and a Queen hide-a-bed in the living room and crib allow for a peaceful nights rest after a nice bath in the Jacuzzi tub or sitting in the private outdoor Hot Tub overlooking Forest Lake!

An additional living room/ sitting area with wood stove, AC and new half bath with full size washer & dryer gives you a chance to plan your day fishing, which is superb, swimming off the 150 square foot floating dock, using our canoe,3 kayaks, 4 person paddle boat, rafts on the lake, cross country or downhill skiing, snowmobiling on marked trails, antiquing and shopping in sales tax free NH, playing golf, hiking, biking, leaf-peeping, or attending one of the many auctions, flea markets concerts, shows or festivals in the area.

For a little exercise and a 100 mile view, climb Mt Monadnock, the most climbed Mtn in the world and only 15 miles from the house. Take the bikes down by the hobby farm with Llamas, goats, ducks, geese, lambs, horses etc. Horses and trail rides are less than a mile away and afterwards, rest those weary muscles in the new Hot Tub with the sun setting right into shimmering Forest Lake.

Winter brings cross country skiing right from the door,(10 sets of skis, 12 sizes of boots & lots of skates, snowshoes, hockey sticks and Ice fishing 'jigs' for your use!)big time downhill skiing within an hour, snowmobiling on marked trails, ice skating, sledding, ice fishing or just relaxing around the wood stove or propane fireplace.

Maybe best of all, just grab a book, snuggle in a chair by the fire,or on one of the 3 outdoor decks and just let your cares drift away as the sun slowly sets out over the lake!

We do tend to book up for the Summertime usually by months before, but also check out our new home on Rockwood Pond in Fitzwilliam, NH VRBO/181030.

About Paul & Anne Harris

We used to run a Country Inn and Spa in Canada. While we certainly enjoy our homes when we can, we really have fun providing an enjoyable and relaxing time for our guests, who do seem to return year after year. We'd like you to be one of them!

Paul & Anne Harris purchased this house in 2002

Why Paul & Anne Harris chose Winchester

The town of Keene, NH, 9 miles north has a wide and constant variety of things to do, with it's 3 universities and very active merchants assoc. The main downtown, with 60 shops & restaurants, with no national chains is very unique. There are all the 'Big Box' stores on the outskirts of Keene.

What makes this house unique

Forest Lake is very protected from prevailing winds, so it warms quickly in the Spring and freezes quickly in the Winter. As a mostly summer seasonal lake, from early fall to late Spring, you own the lake! We have all the boats and sports equipment for a fun filled vacation any time of the year!

A Thanksgiving to Remember!

  • 5 of 5
Paul and Ann's Lake Forest home was wonderful and exceeded our expectations. It's a spacious home and each room is cozier than the next--there was 7 of us and we felt like there was plenty of space. The decor is classic lake home with shelves of books, movies, and nicknacks that are interesting to look at. The house was clean and smelled fresh. The lake views were beautiful, especially after the Thanksgiving snowstorm came through and knocked out power through the weekend. Paul had his electrician out right away to get his generator started so we were powered back up except for the oven, which made for a fun challenge to get Thanksgiving dinner on the table. We cooked our turkey on the grill -- it was one of the best we'd ever tasted -- the dressing in the crockpot -- and everything else on the wood burning stove. We all loved it and the whole experience made for a wonderfully memorable Thanksgiving. We enjoyed the ping pong table in the basement and long walks around the neighborhood. It's in a very beautiful area. Keene and Brattleboro are close by and interesting towns to explore.
I think everyone in our group left something at the house and Paul and Ann were extra sweet to get things back to us (thank you!) We hope to be back again some day and highly recommend this home to anyone looking for a vacation lake cabin.

Picture Perfect weekend

  • 5 of 5
My family and I had an amazing time at the lake house. Paul and Anne were amazing. They gave us door to door directions, and recommendations for places to go grocery shopping. Paul also called the day we checked in to see if we had any questions or needed anything. This house literally has everything you need and more. We went in October and we only expecting to look at the lake, not venture out. But with the paddle boat and canoe right on their private dock, we had to get out there. The views from the lake were amazing, we spent a lot of time out there. The house is cozy but with plenty of room. We also loved the swing at the front of the house and enjoyed our nights at their fire pit roasting marshmallows. My nephews were especially excited because the speedway down the road had some races, they were able to get up really close, it was an unexpected surprise. What an amazing weekend!

Excellent Fall Getaway

  • 5 of 5
Just recently on the Columbus Day weekend my wife and two other couples rented the Forest Lake property. As with all of the other reviews, this property was everything we expected and read about. The house was certainly more than spacious enough for six adults and everything we needed was included in the house. The views of Forest Lake are splendid and every night we had a fire outside in the fire pit and enjoyed the warmth and solitude with an adult beverage.

The city of Keene, New Hampshire is very close and it really is a nice New England style city and very clean with a variety of restaurants. I would certainly recommend visiting the city and enjoying the shops and the pleasant atmosphere. If one should run low on food and house supplies there is a fantastic grocery store on your left just before you arrive into Keene.

Since we were at Forest Lake during peak foliage we made a trip to Vermont and visited Stratton Mountain which is not that long of a drive from Forest Lake and the foliage on Route 30 North and Route 100 South was outstanding. Both of these routes take you thru traditional New England country side and well worth the adventure. Also, another great foliage route is to travel route 9 which will take you to Hillsborough. Once in Hillsborough there is a tavern that looks very small but when it comes to serving a big time gourmet meal, it is a winner. This place could easily be a Food & Wine destination.

After spending a few hours each day on our leaf peeping journeys we retreated to the lake house and simply relaxed by the dock or the upper deck just taking in the fantastic scenery. Since the house came complete with everything one would need to prepare and serve a gourmet meal, we feasted on specialty prepared dinners and enjoyed the comfort of sitting at the large dinning table and talking about our adventures we experienced for the day.

Both my wife and myself have been using Home Away and VRBO for our summer vacations and Fall getaways for the past ten years. We were so surprised when we received a call from the owner of the property on Friday night upon our arrival and he welcomed us to his home and inquired if we needed anything. This has never happened ever before with our previous rentals. So in closing I would highly recommend that if anyone wants to rent a spacious, clean and perfectly located home in a traditional New England setting then certainly consider staying at Forest Lake. You will appreciate your "HOME AWAY".

A perfect romantic fall trip! Highly recommend!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I just returned from a wonderful 5 night stay at this lovely home. What was supposed to be 3 nights, turned into 5 with a cancellation following our intended stay. Weather was rainy earlier in the week so we were thrilled to get a couple of bonus days of beautiful fall weather! We chose this house because it basically had everything we were looking for...on a lake, kayaks, fire pit, hot tub, hiking and biking close by. We rode the Ashuelot rail trail which we picked up in town, about 3 miles from the house. We rode through the Ashuelot covered bridge, along the river, passing abandoned buildings and rail cars that sat eerily reminiscent of the railroad transportation system of days past. This trail is NOT a loop, so after 13+ miles and beginning to feel weary, it was a difficult push to make it back. But then there was the hot tub awaiting our aching muscles. The following rainy day was welcomed by the fact I was really too sore to do much else. We drove to Keene and had dinner at Luca's- excellent food - we highly recommend. All of the books/brochures and maps that Paul and Anne provide, were a great resource. We also found a video store in Keene where were able to rent a season of a program we had started back at home which we watched with the fireplace on to take the chill off of the rainy evening. We were tempted to hike Modanock but with Pisgah so close, we decided to hike there. We started off at the visitor center and began our hike across Doolittle Path onto the trail. What a beautiful trail through a mossy, pine forest with little rivers and ponds. There are signs with historical information about homesteads that existed throughout the area- some over 200+ years. You can still see some the original stone foundations. It was a a perfect fall, sunny day. Trails weren't too rough or steep- mostly on gravel or dirt paths. At the house, my husband fished off the dock and took the canoe out- caught/released some large mouth bass. It's a relatively small lake, but was enough for us to take the kayaks or pedal boat out to explore and also to enjoy the view from the house/dock. I can't say enough about Paul- he is a great host-he and his wife have really thought of everything! There were more things than we could even do- lots for kids, too, but we really enjoyed our time away without the kids :). We slept as good, if not better, than at home-very, comfortable, plenty of pillows and blankets, and cozy down comforter.

Surprise party

  • 5 of 5
10 of us recently stayed at this home for a long weekend as a surprise 77th birthday party for our parents. Ages ranged from 24 to 77 and there was something for everyone. With our son in his own boat fishing, the birthday couple as passengers in the paddle boat and the rest of the group in kayaks, we were all able to enjoy the lake and the beautiful weather. We were able to cook steak tips and baked potatoes on the gas grill and found a large pot for 2 dozen delicious ears of corn on the cob. Everything is there. Everything! We enjoyed the fire pit, the hot tub, ping pong, air hockey and the bikes.
The owners are easy to deal with even allowing our 13 year old dog to come. The home is gorgeous with more than enough amenities. One rainy afternoon, we enjoyed a meal and micro brews at Whetstone Station in Brattleboro (go on a nice day when you can enjoy the rooftop beer garden)!
Our only disappointment was arriving with food, beer, wine and birthday cake for 10 people with only one working refrigerator...we wish this was communicated to us as it would have made things easier. Otherwise, such a great weekend that we think we will make it an annual event!

Relaxing Getaway

  • 5 of 5
Four adults and our dog snickers stayed for three night getaway. Paul and Anne make sure that you want for nothing. We had a wonderful, peaceful and relaxing vacation. Even our dog loved it especially being a passenger on the paddle boat. It was a wonderful time for all. We look forward to staying again. The weather was great and the lake was so clean and peaceful. Thanks again for everything.
