You can watch surfers challenging Freight Train, a shore break known for it's speed and intensity, from your comfortable lanai seat! Just to the left of the breakwater, most afternoons.
Besides the Maalaea Grill, Waterfront Restaurant, Blue Marlin Bar & Grill, Buzz's Wharf and a soon-to-be-opened new eatery, there are the new Maui Ocean Center, several boutiques (check out the Tommy Bahama clearance rack at Moon Bow Tropics and buy a Tahitian pearl at Diana's), ice cream, gourmet coffee, and even a Whalers General Store. Carl's Junior is at the highway intersection, and there are miniature golf and bumper boats. You can catch the shopping shuttle (small fee) at the Pacific Whale Foundation Store if you'd rather not drive to Lahaina and other major resort areas. Who needs to hunt for parking?
Many whale watching boats, commercial fishing and charter boats, and other small craft make their port at Maalaea.
