I've always been enchanted every time I've visited Mexico and in 2009 I made the leap to move to Merida in the Yucatan. This city is a unique place full of beautiful old colonial architecture, an interesting art scene, lots of free concerts and dance performances, and is close to many of the ancient Mayan ruins. The beautiful beaches are also close by. And the people of Merida are friendly--as they say, "muy tranquilo"! I'd be happy to share my lovely home with you during your stay in Merida and help you make the most fun out of your time here.
The Owner purchased this house in 2008
I chose Merida because it's a very safe part of Mexico! It's also tropical and beautiful and has lots of interesting things to explore. As a city, if offers museums and shopping and events but it's close to the beaches and the countryside and the Mayan sites. It has something for everyone!
Staying at El Ave Blanca B&B, you'll feel like you're visiting a friend in Merida, with access to the kitchen for fixing lunches or dinners, with personal attention from a native English speaker, with good proximity to all the tourist sights. All of this for extremely low rates including a delicious breakfast.
We enjoyed meeting Kathleen, who has set up her house in this authentic neighborhood with the budget traveler in mind. She was very helpful in assisting us in every way in order to make our visit to Merida enjoyable and memorable. If you are the adventurous type and don't mind escaping from certain luxuries, such as tv or cd player, or even a clock in your room, then this is the place for you. Our room was large with a cozy en suite bathroom and the outside seating areas were welcome retreats after a day of sightseeing. This house allows you to meet other travelers from around the world, such as we did, two students from Germany who were here for several months studying Comparative Literature. We always felt safe in this neighborhood, even after dark walking back from the main plaza.
Kathleen's home was a wonderful home base for our stay in Merida. This was our first visit in celebration of our 10 year marriage, and our first real trip without our young children. Kathleen was a wonderful host who helped us navigate our time in Merida by helping us with directions and suggestions. The rooms are spacious and the house is lovingly filled with Kathleens beautiful artwork. Breakfast was always prompt, filling, and tasty. The immediate neighborhood is devoid of tourist attractions and is extreemly quiet compared to downtown but a short walk can take you into busier parts of town. Coming home to a quiet oasis was great and it was fun to explore its streets and local shops. The bakery on the corner has good Mexican pastries that we enjoyed regularly, the tamale guy a few blocks down is an option for something quick to eat later on in the evening. There are lots of great little places tucked into home fronts in the neighborhood making it easy to get what you need. The La Reforma restaurant a few blocks away was wonderful, we loved everything we had there. Downtown is about a 15 minute walk if you walk at a faster pace, the city is very pedestrian friendly. We were often out late in the evening and navigated the city and surrounding neighborhoods without issue.
El Ave Blanca is a wonderful place to stay, we hope to stay with Kathleen again in the near future!
We enjoyed a tranquil and cozy sanctuary in the capital of Yucatan.
El Ave Blanca was exactly as advertised and a bit more. The rooms were spacious with comfy queen sized beds, full baths and air-conditioning. We wanted to stay at a place where we could relax and feel at home. At the agreed upon time, breakfast was served promptly; however, we were not always so prompt, but the aroma of the freshly ground coffee from Chiapas lured us in for a tasty meal.
Kathleen was always patient and kind listening to our stories and jokes. She was very gracious, listened and laughed at the proper times. She allowed us to unwind from the stresses of life back home and relax in her B&B. Kathleen treated us like old friends and made our stay memorable and enjoyable.
As one can see from the date of our visit we arrived during the rainy season of early June. We did not know what to expect from the weather. Kathleen advised us to pack our light sports jackets, hats and light weight ponchos just in case. She helped us arrange and plan our touristic forays into the various Mayan sites, making our visit comfortable and easygoing, as I had dreaded trying to make all of the arrangements myself with my schoolboy Spanish.
All in all we would warmly recommend this peaceful micro-hacienda in the middle of Merida to all who wish to have a relaxed and carefree time in a great location.
My wife and I enjoyed an 8 day stay at Kathleen's B&B. It is a wonderful place to explore a local neighborhood, while shopping at the family owned stores and restaurants that are located in the area. The shop owners were very friendly even though we spoke very little Spanish and they made us feel very welcome there. Kathleen's home is about a 10 block walk from Paseo De Montejo and we did find it a bit long for a walk during the heat of the day, but pleasant and safe in the evenings when cooler. There is a bus line that runs to Centro only a block and a half away so a car is not necessary. Kathleen is wonderful about giving the information needed to find and catch the busses, local places to eat and other cultural explorations.
We found her home accurately described in the photos and description and very much enjoyed our time at her place. She made us feel very comfortable about sharing her kitchen and it was wonderful to have a place to cook our own meals and relax in the evening. She provided a great breakfast every
morning and was very accommodating when I wasn't feeling well. We also found her home a delightful place to meet fellow travelers and share adventures over a beer or glass of wine in the evenings.
We both enjoyed getting to know Kathleen and staying in her home; she made us feel very welcome there. We would recommend El Ave Blanca B&B to anyone wanting to experience the feel of a local neighborhood while still having access to tourist destinations and to those who enjoy meeting other travelers. It was a great week. Thanks Kathleen!
Lovely place to stay! It's hard to say which is more important here -- the lovely well-kept home with comfortable accommodations or the folks you meet and talk with while staying! Kathleen is very helpful in answering any questions you might have, and delightful conversations with other well-traveled guests -- over breakfast, on the front porch during the hotter parts of the day, and late into the evenings -- offered insights into Merida, the Yucatan, and other places.
We stayed at Kathleen's bed and breakfast for six weeks, and never once regretted our choice in lodging. Kathleen was a fun and gracious host, and we never felt out of place or uncomfortable. She went out of her way to invite us to Beer and Botanas nights (drinks and snacks!) and took us to the Merida English Library to see what the expat life in the city was like. The room was large and comfortable, the bathroom was clean, the shower was hot, the wi-fi internet worked great and the kitchen was well-equipped. In other words, this is a great place to stay!
