Nourish yourself in nature. You can kick back, relax, and get rejuvenated for the coming season. You will feel a sense of peacefulness the minute you step foot on this special piece of property.
The Bunkhouse Suite is 400 square feet, with a 200 square foot deck. The rock walls that were built in the 1940's have lichen growing on them because the air is so pure.
If you want a place to get away from it all, this is it. The property is unique with the old hitching posts still in place from the original owners, and the lucky horseshoes hanging. Start off your day sitting on the private back deck with cup in your hand, and let the weight fall off your shoulders. The stars are so clear and bright away from all the city lights, they really do put on a show at night. Or just sit by the pond and watch the ducks without a care in the world.
Take a hike to the Carmel River or further up to the Los Padres Dam.
If you're lucky enough to be here on a Monday night, Michael Jones does dinners at the local Cachagua Store, just two minutes away. The menu has such a variety, that is sure to have something for everyone. Reservations are a must! He also does Sunday Brunch. The Cachagua General Store is also open for your last minute groceries, wine, or beer, a place where the locals gather and just chit chat about what they've been doing lately.
So if you're ready to get away from the maddening crowds, and just chill,,,,this is your place,,,a sweet country retreat.

Me and my favorite duck, he always wants a hug. I'm a singer/songwriter, and find this area to be the perfect place to do my writing. I wrote all the songs for my first CD up here by the stream. I love this property, and am working on a project now to have small, private concerts for local artists. Although I enjoy socializing, at the end of the day, there's no place like this place to forget the 'who's who, and the what's what'. Waking in the morning to the sound of the birds singing is my favorite alarm clock. I love spending time in the garden surrounded by my animals.
Jeff loves to golf and there are plenty of courses on the Pennisula. Another one of his passions is retstoring vintage cars. He has a 68 Camero always ready to be fired up.
Rose Merrill purchased this cottage in 2006
The weather is the main reason I love this place. The fog may linger in Carmel and Monterey, but not here. I can totally relax here, just something in the air. Warm sunshine, clean air, and healing sounds of nature, with some treasures of days gone by.
Spacious and adorable with a sense of calm. The deck is a great place to connect with nature, create, with mother nature. You can use the outdoor grill and sink with plenty of utensils. The Bunkhouse Suite is a sweet retreat decorated with pieces that have been collected from old farmhouses. An extra large shower, with windows in every room. Open up the windows, get some fresh air, and connect to the sounds of nature. There really are a billion stars in the sky,,,,you can see them from the deck at night. Some of the furnishings came out of an old bunkhouse on the farm where I grew up, and I've always treasured them, so when I was putting the old bureau in the bedroom, bunkhouse suite became the name.
We celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary on this delightful property in beautiful Carmel Valley. The owner, Rose, greeted us at the gate with fresh, delicious homemade cookies. A welcome treat after enjoying the country drive up to their property. It's a rather long drive, but beautiful. Rose encouraged us to arrive before dark. We recommend the same.
We instantly felt at home in the Bunkhouse, which is decorated warmly, and had absolutely everything we needed for our stay. Personal touches included fresh flowers, a couple of water bottles, and everything we needed to BBQ, use a single burner on the side of the BBQ, outdoor sink on the deck. Oh, did I mention the deck is completely private with a creek running behind it? Heavenly peaceful!
Inside is a Kurig coffee pot, microwave, a small refrigerator and a toaster oven. Cooking and doing dishes a breeze. It felt a little like camping, but with all the luxuries of comfort and shelter. The bedroom is awesome, the bed is extremely comfortable, and in the living space a wonderful electric fireplace unit that kept us plenty warm in the evenings. A little wine and cheese and crackers and we were set to enjoy our anniversary.
You will want to bring your food up with you, make a stop along the way, as it's about 20-25 minutes to the market in Carmel Valley.
The bunkhouse is set up with a portable DVDS player and movies, books, and music CDs. A few games, cards, and fabulous weather!
We found great trails to walk to the local Dam and Carmel River. There is also a park nearby if you have children. Rose and Jim have two dogs, chickens and ducks, a cat, duck pond, all accessible for us to enjoy. But never a bother!
All in all, we had a great time, and would love to return. Thank you Rose and Jeff for your wonderful hospitality. Five stars from us!
The Bunkhouse was very, quaint and secluded with a nearby stream. Ideal getaway without TV's and phones! Hostess Rose was very friendly and accommodating. Nearby hiking by the dam and shopping in the village. Would like to return!
Wow, what a gorgeous place to visit. We loved it so much we hated to leave. The hiking, swimming and local community was so enchanting it was HEAVEN. We had a perfect host weather, and adventures. Rose is the friendliest most accommodating person you'd ever want to meet. She makes you feel like family:) The BED is SOOOO comfortable you feel like you're sleeping on air. The view is spectacular the creek behind the house was like a fairytale or a place you could shoot a movie. JUST FABULOUS, I can't wait to return to the BUNKHOUSE just too wonderful for words!!
I never write a review - ever. But our stay at here was so good that I'm writing one. The little house is great. The atmosphere is hustle and hasstle free in beautiful countryside. And the dogs and chickens and ducks were so friendly to our kids (one and three) it made our stay feel like childcare was included. (And, if you have boys especially...there are old tractors to sit on...) And finally - Rose, the owner (who lives on site and is there when you want to talk but never in your face) is the best host you could ever hope for. Hospitable, welcoming and friendly. We want to come back.
As all the other reviewers have indicated, Rose and Jeff are wonderful hosts and they have an amazing property in a great area. We stayed for three nights in early August and only left the area once to head up to Point Lobos for a day (which I'd highly recommend to anyone visiting the area). The rest of the time we spent just hanging out and we had an amazing time. There was enough in the immediate area to keep our four and six year olds occupied for three days. We were either sitting out on the back porch, visiting with the animals (chickens, ducks, dogs and cat), taking turns on the swing or walking around looking for acorns and other "treasures". We even had the pleasure of watching Rose's band practice in the backyard one day we were there. The kids and I loved that. There was also a great little park right around the corner with an amazing backdrop and a little swimming hole that Rose walked us to (it could have used some shading though on the play equipment). Along the way, we met a few neighbors who all knew Rose and her dog's Poncho's names. There was a real sense of community that we just weren't used to coming from the Los Angeles area. It was refreshing.
The house itself was as advertised...maybe better. It had everything we needed and actually felt quite roomy and private. There was an outdoor sink/counter (we couldn't tell from pictures/description if there was a sink, so that was nice to see) and a gas grill with a basic set of pots, pans and utensils where we were able to prepare all the meals we'd planned. The kids fit comfortably on the pullout couch and us in the bed in the other room. On some nights, after a hard day of doing absolutely nothing, we found ourselves going to be before the sunset. It was a throughly relaxing stay. My kids named this as our best out of about 4 weekend trips this summer and we're already considering another visit in a couple months.
Our family had a great time at Rose's guest cottage. She was very hospitable and welcoming. The house was part of a larger property with chickens, ducks, a cat, and a dog. Great place to explore. The house feels secluded and comfortable, and far from any hustle and bustle. If we had more time, we would have explored some of the trails and the river in the area.
