Overview

Carmel Valley Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Den, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3)

Nourish yourself in nature. You can kick back, relax, and get rejuvenated for the coming season. You will feel a sense of peacefulness the minute you step foot on this special piece of property.

The Bunkhouse Suite is 400 square feet, with a 200 square foot deck. The rock walls that were built in the 1940's have lichen growing on them because the air is so pure.

If you want a place to get away from it all, this is it. The property is unique with the old hitching posts still in place from the original owners, and his old boat sits on top of his old wagon wheels. The stars are so clear and bright away from all the city lights, they really do put on a show at night. Or just sit by the pond and watch the ducks without a care in the world.

If you're lucky enough to be here on a Monday night, Michael Jones does dinners at the local Cachagua Store, just two minutes away. The menu has such a variety, that is sure to have something for everyone. Reservations are a must! He also does Sunday Breakfast. The Cachagua General Store is also open for your last minute groceries, wine, or beer.

So if you're ready to get away from the maddening crowds, and just chill,,,,this is your place,,,a sweet country retreat.

The Los Padres Dam, a short hike away, which is connected to the Carmel River is a view in itself, if you're a water person, you'll appreciate these waters.

Keywords: Tranquil setting with a deck overlooking a creek (seasonal)

About Rose Merrill

Me and my favorite duck, he always wants a hug. I'm a singer/songwriter, and find this area to be the perfect place to do my writing. I wrote all the songs for my first CD up here by the stream. I love this property, and am working on a project now to have small, private concerts for local artists. Although I enjoy socializing, at the end of the day, there's no place like this place to forget the 'who's who, and the what's what'. Waking in the morning to the sound of the birds singing is my favorite alarm clock. I love spending time in the garden surrounded by my animals.

Jeff loves to golf and there are plenty of courses on the Pennisula. Another one of his passions is retstoring vintage cars. He has a 68 Camero always ready to be fired up.

Rose Merrill purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Rose Merrill chose Carmel Valley

The weather is the main reason I love this place. The fog may linger in Carmel and Monterey, but not here. I can totally relax here, just something in the air. Warm sunshine, clean air, and healing sounds of nature, with some treasures of days gone by.

What makes this cottage unique

Spacious and adorable with a sense of calm. The deck is a great place to connect with nature, create, with mother nature. You can use the outdoor grill and sink with plenty of utensils. The Bunkhouse Suite is a sweet retreat decorated with pieces that have been collected from old farmhouses. An extra large shower, with windows in every room. Open up the windows, get some fresh air, and connect to the sounds of nature. There really are a billion stars in the sky,,,,you can see them from the deck at night. Some of the furnishings came out of an old bunkhouse on the farm where I grew up, and I've always treasured them, so when I was putting the old bureau in the bedroom, bunkhouse suite became the name.

Our stay was fanstastic

  • 5 of 5
As all the other reviewers have indicated, Rose and Jeff are wonderful hosts and they have an amazing property in a great area. We stayed for three nights in early August and only left the area once to head up to Point Lobos for a day (which I'd highly recommend to anyone visiting the area). The rest of the time we spent just hanging out and we had an amazing time. There was enough in the immediate area to keep our four and six year olds occupied for three days. We were either sitting out on the back porch, visiting with the animals (chickens, ducks, dogs and cat), taking turns on the swing or walking around looking for acorns and other "treasures". We even had the pleasure of watching Rose's band practice in the backyard one day we were there. The kids and I loved that. There was also a great little park right around the corner with an amazing backdrop and a little swimming hole that Rose walked us to (it could have used some shading though on the play equipment). Along the way, we met a few neighbors who all knew Rose and her dog's Poncho's names. There was a real sense of community that we just weren't used to coming from the Los Angeles area. It was refreshing.

The house itself was as advertised...maybe better. It had everything we needed and actually felt quite roomy and private. There was an outdoor sink/counter (we couldn't tell from pictures/description if there was a sink, so that was nice to see) and a gas grill with a basic set of pots, pans and utensils where we were able to prepare all the meals we'd planned. The kids fit comfortably on the pullout couch and us in the bed in the other room. On some nights, after a hard day of doing absolutely nothing, we found ourselves going to be before the sunset. It was a throughly relaxing stay. My kids named this as our best out of about 4 weekend trips this summer and we're already considering another visit in a couple months.

Cottage in the Oaks

  • 5 of 5
Our family had a great time at Rose's guest cottage. She was very hospitable and welcoming. The house was part of a larger property with chickens, ducks, a cat, and a dog. Great place to explore. The house feels secluded and comfortable, and far from any hustle and bustle. If we had more time, we would have explored some of the trails and the river in the area.

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5
We were blessed to be able to stay here for our 5 year wedding anniversary! We were blown away by the beauty of Carmel Valley! The trees (my hubby called them the bayou trees) hang over the road that you drive in on (Carmel Valley Road) shading most of your drive. We were met by Rose & Pancho when we arrived, needless to say our dog was pleased to have a buddy to hang out with! Rose showed us the grounds (beautiful) and got us acclimated, we also met her husband Jeff! They were both so sweet, Jeff pulled fresh lettuce from the garden for us (it was sooo yummy!) and Rose brought us fresh eggs from their chickens! Again......so yummy! They were the perfect hosts!
The bunkhouse suite was the perfect location, romantic & quiet, for our home base for the time we were there! We were able to do day trips to Carmel, and Big Sur. We took our dog to the local swimming hole, recommended by Rose. We just relaxed and enjoyed the scenery! It was the perfect anniversary celebration :) We are looking forward to enjoying it again!

Reluctant to share this hidden secret in Carmel Valley

  • 5 of 5
I had such a great stay at this wonderful property, I didn't really want to let too many people know about it so it would be available for me to return any time. But Rose and Jeff were so kind and generous to me, sharing the truth is only the right thing to do. Upon arrival, they greeted me as if I were a family member visiting. I brought my 2 dogs, and they treated them as special guests as well. As a welcome treat, they got me some fresh strawberries from the market that morning. I knew then it was the right decision to pick this place for the long weekend. I'm going through a transition in my life and mentioned that I was there to soothe my spirit. And that's exactly what I did. Rose and Jeff made this rental they call the "Bunkhouse" the most peaceful and tranquil place for a visitor like me. The house is very rustic yet tastefully decorated. I love the vintage telephone on the bedroom wall. It has everything I needed, with a patio in the back facing the creek. The patio furniture under the trees was a perfect spot for reading a book, sipping some coffee or tea, and soaking in the quiet atmosphere. Even my dogs think so. Oh, did I mention there's a Keurig coffee maker in the house? So many nice touches, I could tell Rose and Jeff genuinely want to make their guests feel comfortable. I can't say enough good things about them. I will definitely return...very soon.

the place away from it all

The bunk house is just the right distance from town but we were still able to enjoy Carmel. Quiet surroundings but still able to go to the store and get food to bbq on the nice private deck in the back. The bed was so nice now we need to get a new bed for our house! Our hosts were the best; just the right amount of attention. We loved the dogs and our time at the bunk house. We look forward to going back soon.

Superb

  • 5 of 5
Rose and Jeff were absolutely wonderful to us. They're great people that add to a beautiful little farm cottage up in the hills. We went hiking everyday and spent a lot of time up by the dam exploring. This is a much better option than a hotel. Be aware, the nearest city is a small village about 25 minutes away but it has good food and a couple places to get drinks. Check out the famous American Poet Robinson Jeffers house. It's called Tor House and it's a beautiful stone house with a 30 foot handmade stone tower that he and his family built It's in the city of Carmel (45 minutes away)but well worth the trip. I'm for sure going to come back to the Bunk House for another trip.
