About Pam

We designed and built Bay Grove as our home in 1994, intending St. John to be our final destination. In 2007 we purchased an abandoned farm in Ponce, Puerto Rico and we now share our time between our two beautiful properties in St. John and Puerto Rico. We decided to share our home on St. John with people seeking to relax in the serene comfort and explore the beautiful island of St. John and surrounding outlying islands.

Pam purchased this house in 1994

Why Pam chose Bordeaux Mountain

We travelled to St. John on business in November of 1990 and fell in love with its beauty. We searched the island for the perfect piece of property to build our final destination home. We spent much time sitting on pieces of property at all hours of the day and nite just so we could find the perfect spot. We sat on parcels near the ocean, parcels on both ends of the island, parcels near town(s), and parcels in the woods. We finally found the perfect parcel on the top of Bordeaux Mountain where we built our home nestled in the grove of Bay Rum Trees that existed on the lot. Bay Grove is located on Bordeaux Mountain in the center of the island with easy access to both towns and all the beautiful north shore beaches, and is one of the few lots that actually has a yard with grass! The 1200 foot elevation of Bordeaux Mountain combined with the constant flow of the tradewinds allows the fresh, cool, tropical air to flow through the large screened windows which cools our home naturally without the use of air conditioning. There is a view to the south for sunset watchers over French Cap, St. Croix, and the Caribbean Sea.

What makes this house unique

We have always enjoyed the coolness of the altitude on Bordeaux Mountain, and the quiet, serenity of our home's location. It's a great place to relax, unwind, and get away from it all. From enjoying the presence of the humming and sugar birds, occasional wild deer, and donkeys, watching the sunset to the South over French Cap, views of St. Croix and the Caribbean Sea, to star-gazing with the singing croakies at night, Bay Grove is one of our most favorite spots on earth and we are glad to be able to share all the comforts and wonders of Bay Grove with you.

Perfect St John Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here over New Year's for just over a week, and were so sad to leave! Pam and Richard were perfect, gracious hosts. They gave us a warm welcome, saw to it that we were comfortable during our stay, gave us directions, hiking tips and restaurant suggestions... all while somehow remaining completely unobtrusive. The property detail mentions that you will need 4-wheel drive, and this is no exaggeration. Rent a jeep! You won't be able to make it up the last stretch of road and driveway otherwise. The house was gorgeous and well-appointed, decorated in original artwork and surrounded by woods. It's worth staying here for the outdoor shower alone! The evenings were cool up on the hill and great for sleeping. Bring a light sweater. The location is smack-dab in the middle of the island, convenient to Cruz Bay, Coral Bay and North Shore beaches. I'm already plotting to return! Thanks again for an amazing vacation!!

Owner's Response: We so enjoyed meeting you and were glad we could help you find your way around St. John and make recommendations to help you enjoy St. John to the fullest! We only wish that the rainy season had not washed out the short uphill stretch of road just before your arrival! Hopefully next time you come the road will be back in shape, but we still do recommend our guests rent a jeep to explore more of those off the beaten track portions of St. John! We are glad you enjoyed your stay and look forward to your return visit and seeing you both again! Thank you for choosing Bay Grove! Keep warm!

Great property, super helpful owners.

I gave my son a gift of this vacation and he selected this house and what a treasure. Beautiful house exactly as pictured. The owners were awesome, picked them up at the ferry, took them for food and even met me at the ferry a day later when I was dropping off the car rental. When renting you should book a four wheel drive but what a wonderful time they had. A million thanks.

Owner's Response: It was wonderful meeting you, your son and his fiancée, and being able to help with your arrival and late rental car. Your son and fiancée were wonderful guests and seemed to be enjoying their stay. Thank you so much for choosing Bay Grove.

Quiet retreat in the woods.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for 6 nights, and it was wonderful! The cottage was well appointed, clean, and generally cool. It had air conditioning, but we only used it a couple of times. It was roomy enough for us to spread out stuff out, and had a nicely furnished kitchenette.

The renters were on site during our visit, and were very hospitable, making sure were had everything we needed. They pointed us to a lot of great, off the beaten track things to see and do.

We had a wonderful stay, and were very happy with the location, away from the hustle and bustle. A caution, like much of St John, a Jeep or other 4WD vehicle is a good idea.

Deep Island Experience

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I wanted a relaxing, comfortable place to stay on St. John with our adult daughter as we celebrated our 35th anniversary. This was our fourth trip to the island, but the first time we rented a house there (We used to stay at the Maho Bay campgrounds.)

Bay Grove proved to be perfect in every way. As the VRBO listing says, it's breezy and secluded on top of Bordeaux Mountain, which means virtually no mosquitos or no-seeums! (A nice change from Maho.) The main house was spacious with super-comfortable couches. The kitchen was huge and well-stocked for those who like to cook (as we do). We ate almost every meal at home. The bedroom was spacious and the mattress perfect - firm but not hard. High on the mountain, the house was warm but not hot in the daytime, and cool as soon as evening set in.

Our daughter slept in the cottage, which provided a perfect combination of personal space for her, but close enough so we were "together."

Bay Grove does not have spectacular views, but it's a short drive to anywhere you want to go. If you want the deep island experience, I highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: We are so glad that you found Bay Grove to be the perfect respite from busy NYC! We are working on topping off the trees to give the guests a sunset water view so frequently asked for. Thank you for your comments in the guest book also. It was a pleasure meeting and accommodating you on your visit to St. John.

All it is cracked up to be

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary on St John, it was our second time to the island and this time we selected Bay Grove. This place is much larger than it looks in the pictures and the grounds are amazing and very well kept. It is very quiet and secluded, just like the other reviews said, and Pam provided everything for us and checked to make sure all was well during our time. It is close enough to all the beaches but offers a nice mountain breeze at night that is a perfect get away from the heat. As mentioned in other reviews, the shower very relaxing under the stars. I almost hate to write a review because I don't want other people finding out about this place!!! We will definitely be back as often as possible.

Owner's Response: Laura and Jed...we are so glad that you enjoyed Bay Grove so much! We appreciate the care you gave to our home and are glad you found everything to be beyond your expectations!!! We find it quite amusing that you don't want anyone else to know about it! We've had a few people say the same. :) We so enjoyed meeting you both and would be more that happy to accommodate you on your return visit(s) to St. John! Hope to see you soon!!!

Best Yet!

This was our 3rd consecutive year on St. John and we were very lucky to find Bay Grove. It's in a secluded, quiet neighborhood high up on Bordeaux Mountain. The house is beautiful and impeccably clean, the photos don't do it justice. There's a wraparound porch, a patio in the rear with a gas grill and an amazing stone outdoor shower off the bathroom. The property is landscaped with lovely plantings and a gurgling fountain, it's shaded so the days and nights were cool with no need for air conditioning. The location is great from our point of view, about equidistant from either Cruz Bay or Coral Bay. North Shore beaches easy to get to from this central location. There is no panoramic view but we didn't miss it a bit. The owner was very accommodating, we were delayed by bad weather but when we arrived 2 days late the owner met us to show us around the property. There is a guest cottage on the property and it was occupied during our stay but it's not close to the main house and certainly no intrusion to your privacy. There are 2 kayaks available for use as well as coolers, beach towels and snorkeling equipment. We certainly hope to return, Highly recommended.

I had a wonderful time chatting and having dinner with you. I'm glad you had such a great time and that Bay Grove was such a great experience for your vacation. We hope to be able to accommodate you on your next adventure to St. John! Thank you for the wonderful review.
