Awaken to the sound of the ocean and wind in the palms at this 1 bedroom, 1 bath guesthouse located only 100 yds from a secluded beach on one acre, level, grassy green lawn with mature fruit trees and beautiful trail to beach along stream.
Lanai spans the entire front of the guesthouse giving spacious dining and living area with an ocean view. Hand-made mahogany and teak doors, windows and floors give a unique tropical feel of early Hawaii but with modern conveniences. Main room has a kitchenette with microwave and refrigerator and a sofa bed. WiFi, National free long distance, ipod dock but no television or air conditioning as the ocean breeze cools the cottage. Beautiful, modern bathroom with washer/dryer and large walk-in shower. Bedroom has queen-sized bed with large closet. Twelve-minute drive to Kapaa, 15 minutes to Kilahua lighthouse and 25 minutes to Hanelei and Napali Coast.
Please note that the cottage does not have a range and has only minimal equipment for food preparation. There is a propane grill and burner on the porch. However, there are fantastic restaurants within a 12- to 20-minute drive.
On site caretaker. No pets, as the beach is a nesting preserve for the Hawaii monk seal and the Hawaii duck. Non-smokers only.

I fell in love with Kauai 15 years ago and come back to Aliomanu Bay as often as I can.
Jerry Crabtree purchased this house in 1997
I bought this property because it is so close to the ocean and one hears the constant surf and wind in the palms day and night. The beach is protected by a large reef so swimming is very safe as long as you do not go beyond the reef's edge. I also bought this property because I wanted design and build a beach house with lots of beautiful wood and an opportunity to create something that was distinctively my own.
I love the privacy, the sounds of the ocean, wind and waves as I awake in the morning. The bay has a large barrier reef that protects the beach and makes it ideal for swimming, snorkeling and surfing. If you click on the satellite view in the map on the right you will see the protected and calm area of Aliomanu Bay behind the reef where you can swim or snorkel.
This is a truly lovely vacation rental. The guest house is actually a suite of rooms attached to the main house with a bedroom, bath/laundry room, living room with a small kitchenette, and a spacious deck. The property is VERY nice with the custom built home, professionaly landscaped grounds, and a helpful, friendly caretaker on site in her own cottage. (She offered us fresh coconut for morning treats!) Note that the kitchen facilities were limited, so most meals were eaten out. We had a wonderful stay and hope to return in the future.
The Walden guest house is indeed a magical spot. The house is beautiful, well maintained, and a short walk to a majestic (very secluded) beach. The caretaker is lovely, her presence significantly added to the charm. The house wasn't quite as advertised hence the 3/5. The listing mentioned a full-sized BBQ which simply didn't exist - the only other means to heat food was the kitchenette's microwave. Unfortunately we didn't discover this until after we completed our shopping trip for the 10-day stay. This led to a significant amount of spoiled/unused food and more meals out than we were planning. Not ideal. My review would certainly have been 5/5 had it not been for this.
My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon in Kauai and loved every minute of it. The property is beautiful and the photos and descriptions listed are very accurate. The caretaker was very kind and helpful, which made our stay even more comfortable. Everything was very clean, and well maintained. It is not in one of the more populated towns, which we really liked. I highly recommend staying here! You will not be disappointed.
Magical is the one word to describe Walden by the Sea. The pictures online do not in any way provide the full beauty and serenity.
(1) The guest house is spacious, calming and met every need. It’s hard to believe this is actually a “guest house”. We loved having breakfast on the lanai, listening to the ocean, watching all of the different birds coming and going, and having the breathtaking scenery of the property.
(2) The beach is stunning and has it all. If you like to snorkel, fish, ride the waves, walk the beach or simply relax with a great book, this beach is it. We visited several beaches, but decided this beach is the best. Most of time we were by ourselves with the exception of the sting rays we saw up close or the monk seal that was sun bathing.
(3) Location, location, location……perfect. We love that this location is a little secluded, but close enough to other towns for popular restaurants and shopping. You are not surrounded by all of the “touristy” crowds.
(4) Patti the caretaker of the property is absolutely amazing. She is the cherry on the sundae. She helped us with so many questions and was so kind and gracious. We were blessed to have our wedding on the beach and Patti was kind enough to connect us with her sister, Chris Lonie who is a photographer (Kohalafoto Photography). What a pleasure to work with Chris. Can’t begin to describe how perfect our wedding day was because of Chris and Patti. They went above and beyond what was expected. They treated us like we were family.
We had a wonderful vacation/honeymoon and hope to spend many anniversaries at Walden by the Sea.
First of all we would like to thank Jerry for all the work over the years he has put into this wonderful property. It truly is beautiful! It is private, located PERFECTLY on the coast, close to places north, and also places south. It was quiet, and as advertised, a minute from a secluded beach and the ocean, and having Patty and her husband close by if we had any inquires was wonderful. (They are an added bonus to the property!!)
My wife and I have absolutely NO problems recommending this to others, and for our two weeks (we just left there a few days ago)...it was not only a good way to get out of the cold and below zero temps...but provided the quiet and tranquility we were looking for.
Again...thanks Jerry and Patty!
We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful place. The guest house was extremely comfortable, and the positive reviews we read earlier were right on the money. Access to the fabulous - and practically empty - beach was an easy walk down a short trail. This was a huge attraction for our 12-year old daughter, who enjoyed the snorkeling here too. The sunrise is well worth seeing! The house is located so it is extremely convenient to the many sights and activities on the north and east sides of the island, and convenient to shopping in Kapa'a and Hanalei. We had a very relaxing, completely comfortable stay.
One small bit of practical advise would be to pack a good kitchen knife and a cutting board - in checked baggage of course. The steak knives in the house are not quite long enough to comfortably cut pineapple with - and you'll want to get into the fabulous fresh fruit while you are there.
Thanks for sharing your place with us. It was a great vacation - we are ready to return!
