'Carnelian Cottage' is a mountain getaway, not a city house in the mountains. The whole interior of this 'Old Tahoe' style cabin is varnished knotty pine. Its 12' x 20' living room features a big stone fireplace flanked on both sides by comfortable window seats. Three bedrooms upstairs (2 with twin beds and one double) sleep 6 people. The original owner was an Olympic gold medalist in rowing and two of his 12-foot oars hang above the entry to the dining room while a third oar serves as the stair rail. Outside, a sun deck wraps around the front and side of the house and in the secluded back yard there is a swing for our little guests. The yard is maintained in a natural state with fir, cedar and pine trees.

Amenities: The house has satellite TV and DVD player, as well as a selection of games, books and puzzles for your enjoyment. The kitchen features a gas range with oven and broiler, all cooking utensils and dishes, toaster, coffee maker, refrigerator and a garbage disposal. The dining room table seats 8. There is a barbecue for your use and firewood is provided.

Activities: It's a short walk to restaurants, 2 public beaches, a marina, convenience store, kayak rentals, miniature golf and video game center. Hiking trails 1/4 mile behind the house offer solitude and scenic lake views. There are golf courses at Tahoe City, Kings Beach and Incline, all within 10 miles. There are bicycle rentals at Tahoe City. From there, paved bike trails run along the Truckee River and the West Shore of the Lake. Depending on water level, there is usually river rafting on the Truckee River.

Area: Located in Carnelian Bay, halfway between Tahoe City and Kings Beach and about 5 miles from CalNeva and other casinos at the Nevada border. Tahoe City and Kings Beach both feature a variety of shops and restaurants.

My wife and I stayed here for a week in August 2007. We found this home to be even better than the pictures. If you like true Tahoe charm, this place is for you. The wraparound deck with BBQ was great when we had friends from Sacramento come by for a day at Tahoe. Plenty of parking as well. The beach and mini golf course were just a short walk away, along with a great pizza restaurant. I also took a short (about 20 minutes one way) hike behind the house that took me to great views of the Lake, Heavenly Valley and much more. We vacation in Tahoe yearly and this will be the first time we are returning to the same house - that's how much we enjoyed this home.

My family has vacationed at this cottage each summer for the past decade or so, and the property never fails exceed our expectations. It is indeed a "mountain getaway"--a quiet place to relax, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The air is clean, the water is clear and the cabin is perfect for families looking to spend some time away from it all. We recommend the pizza parlor up the street (just tell them Angelo sent you!) and the mini-golf course a little bit further on. There are some fantastic hikes nearby--some of my favorite ones end right at the lake, so bring a swimsuit and a towel!

A week in 'the golden house'

My 4-year old called it the 'golden' house at the second day of our stay. Now a few weeks after our return she still talks about the 'golden' house and how she would like to return, and we will! If we stayed at home, kids had a great time building pine cone houses and picking flours, while we were relaxing on the porch. The cottage is great for families with kids at all ages but also for friends that want to share some time together. It is located conveniently close to the lake and walking distance to the beach, the pizza restaurant close bye served the best pizza we ever had.

Carnelian Cottage: A Great Family Getaway

Our family has spent a week or two staying in the Carnelian Cottage every summer for the last 15 years. We love it.

We have spent hours skipping rocks at the stone beach just down the street and have hiked the trails up the mountain behind the cottage. Staying in this beautiful cabin transports us away from our regular urban life yet still allows us to walk to the store for milk or to the pizzeria for dinner.

Our family of five has always found the cottage to be a comfortable, inviting place to stay. The cottage has comfortable beds, a great living room and a kitchen with everything one needs to cook for friends and family. The great front deck provides an ideal place to read the morning paper or to enjoy a pleasant Lake Tahoe evening.

We love this place and can't recommend it highly enough.

Perfect mountain cabin, family vacation getaway.

Our family has vacationed here several times over the years during summer and winter. When our 3 kids were little, the tree house was a favorite. One of the best memories involved hiding surprises in it at night when the kids were sleeping. Each morning they would run out and discover what the "Lake Tahoe bird" had brought! The house is very comfortable, quiet and well-equipped. Games and books help keep us busy at night. The big fireplace sure is nice. Behind the cabin, we enjoy hiking up the trails and just getting lost in the forest. The short walk to the miniature golf place was always an adventure, as was checking out the nearby Chris-craft wooden boat restoration company. We are never disappointed and would highly recommend staying here.
