If you love nature, want a cozy vacation spot away from cars, streets, noise, and cities, and love the outdoors, this place is it! The owner calls it, "His bit of heaven." We agree and it became ours for a week in July. The 3-BR fully equipped cottage, built in 1931, has a beautiful fieldstone fireplace, lots of views including Mt. Washington from the two docks (you have to have your own boat to come and go but we never wanted to go), and is full of quaint memoralba from the author-owner's world-wide journeys. It comes with its own library of eclectic books, a great outdoor soak-tub for two under the trees, beautiful hiking trails, good fishing (the owner is author of the definitive book on Lake Winni angling: www.deepwaterspress.com), and friendly, helpful neighbors! 140 Bear Island is the best possible vacation spot for adults and children who love nature!
We are a family of three with 9 year-old child who were lucky enough to rent this lovely, romantic, nature-full hide-away on an island on beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee. This beautiful lakeside, quaint 1930s cottage has it all: two docks for canoes and boats in crystal clear water, view of the White Mountains, beautiful flowers and plants, fireplace, antiques and wonderful decor in cozy cottage which has all the facilities for cooking, living, sleeping, playing, and wonderful nature trails on the island. Neighbors are friendly and helpful. Swimming, boating, fishing are all out of this world! Owner is the author of the definitive book on fishing glacial lakes and is willing to share his tips. If you have your own boat or access to one, this is the best vacation ever! Loons are calling us back as soon as we can return.
This Gentlemen has shared his slice of heaven with our family the 3rd week of July 2008. The house is very user friendly, comfy and looks out at the morning sunrise thru a "glass wall" of windows. House, beds, living areas and kitchen all well stocked with appliances. Neighbors are friendly and willing to help with any questions or needs. The only drawback, my son Dan is an avid animal lover and the owner has many examples of his hunting prowness. My son was disconcerted, the rest of the family was fine with the display.
Lake Winnipesaukee is one of the most beautiful, natural, glacial lakes in the world. It is scenic, clean, excellent for swimming and angling (landlocked salmon, lake trout, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, perch, etc), sailing, canoeing, motorboating, and vacationing for families. Bear island, where my cottage is, is the largest island in the lake not connected to shore by bridge. (There are 360 islands on Lake Winnipesaukee which translates from the Abanaki Indian to 'The Smile of the Great Spirit.' Summer theater, art shows, and festivals are available to the vacationer in the Lakes Region. My cottage is 3.5 miles from the Meredith Public Docks and Parking at Brown's Boat Basin on Meredith Neck. You can launch your boat there and park your car as well.
Other Activities: Great fishing! (Owner is author of the definitive NE angling book
Golf: Excellent restaurants, shopping at outlets, varieties of great outdoor recreation in the beauty of the Lakes Region of NH, or vacation loafing!
